PEU waiting for pins, question about moisture
    #25193966 - 05/09/18 06:11 PM (6 years, 8 months ago)

Been waiting for my PEU to pin, it’s been fully colonized since 4-26, so like 2 weeks about. I know they take a while, but my moisture in the middle of the sub (top) looks good all the time, nice beads of water, my walls always have condensation on them, I have polyfill tight in all 6 holes, but it seems the two long sides of the sub don’t keep the moisture like the middle, I’ve misted the edges a few times, but I don’t like to as I shouldn’t need to. It doesn’t look super dry, but the glistening water disappears almost every day it seems like.

So should I mist the sides when they are like that? Or should I hold off? It just doesn’t seem like a good idea because it hasn’t even had a flush yet. Temp is like 75ish during the day and like 68-72 at night.

Also more info, it’s one brick of coir Bucket Tek with about 4qt of water, when I did field capacity test, I thought it was even too hydrated, but went with it anyway, it was a few drops on some squeezes, and a little more runny on some squeezes, so I don’t think I did that wrong. When I tested the final product before putting it in my tub, the field cap. Seemed perfect.

I wouldn't mist right away. The sub recipe I use calls for 2qts vermiculite with that brick of coir and 4qts water.
Did you add verm?

No Verm, straight coir. The brick was I think 630 or 640 grams, 4 qts of water, that I squeezed out some excess.

Yea the tek calls for 2qts verm as well.I would hold off on misting, and if you do mist,do it lightly.Your sub is probably on the wet side.

I’m using Bodhisatta Bucket Tek, which he doesn’t use anything but coir, and says he uses a hair over 4qts for his brand of coir, which is the same brand I have, and I weighed my brick which was slightly less than 650g, so I used  slightly less than 4qt. And squeezed it all and made sure it was field capacity. So I followed his tek exactly. I’ve just never had a problem with edges drying out. But I will hold off for a couple days and see. I just don’t like seeing the beads of water disappear.

Last night when I shut off my lights, (after posting this) I noticed a single pin on the edge of my sub (top). Exactly the spot that’s been drying out and I’ve been misting. Guess maybe that was a good thing what was happening. Might be time to loosen the polyfill.

Field capacity is field capacity, squeeze excess out or add verm to soak it up... works either way. I would say loosen poly a little to help more air flow. You are getting pins just need air over more of the surface. Evaporation is what you want. Keep the misting but give the time to evaporate. You pins will form. Just have to adjust to get the air flow evened out across surface.

I agree. I loosened my shit up earlier and noticed a few more pins in that bad boy as well. The good thing is they look normal and don’t look like the dreaded blobs. Thanks!
