Help! How colonized do BRF jars need to be before spawning to bulk?
    #25190204 - 05/07/18 06:32 PM (5 years, 10 months ago)

I have some jars (BRF) that are about half colonized. I read somewhere previously that if spawning to bulk in monotubs, the jars don't need to be fully colonized. Now I can't find that post and don't know if it is accurate for BRF. Any info appreciated. I don't want to mess anything up, but if it's safe to take the next step and mix the partially colonized BRF jars with bulk pasteurized substrate in tubs I wanna get it done asap. Thanks in advance.

That sounds like a horrible idea.

You're going to want to wait until its 100% colonized to spawn it to bulk

Yea,as above stated, you're gonna want them to be fully 100% colonized before spawning to bulk. You may have read somewhere that the consolidation period is not needed, which(if spawning to bulk)is correct.

I have had some success with spawning grain jars early because they can get dried out in places and stall at 95% or something. Definitely would never spawn anything at 50% though.

Good luck! Try to be patient and don't check on them too often.

OK. thank you! I kinda figured when I couldn't find ANY mention of taking the next step before full colonization but wanted to make sure. First time doing this solo, in the past my ex did this part.

BTW, what is the difference between storing the jars inside a closed tub to colonize or out on a closet shelf? I've seen it both ways and to be safe against contamination I left mine in a clear tub in a closet with indirect natural sunlight. (Yes I have a weird old apartment with a small window in a closet lol.) But is this slowing it down?

On other topics: if anyone has links to the following pieces of info best for BRF jars going to bulk in tubs I'd be grateful. I've pieced together what I think is best from two dozen different teks but not clear on a few things.

1. Ideal temp for fastest colonization in the jars

2. Best temp for bulk colonization (once I mix it in the tubs)

3. Ratio for how many colonized quart jars to how much verm/Coir substrate (I am using 64 quart tubs)

PS: so far I've exerted uncharacteristic self control and only checked on the jars 3 times in 2.5 weeks. I am trying my best to follow all this great advice!
THANK YOU EVERYBODY

The layer of vermiculite inside the cakes is all the protection u need. Putting the jars in tubs is not needed.

And as u already know, crumble your cakes into bulk when they are at 100%.

The post u read about uncolonized brf was probably a last ditch effort, or they were talking about the dry Verm not being colonized cuz for some reason some people thinks it's going to colonize. And if u don't know answers to these questions, u should really really read thru bulk grow logs, otherwise I can see it now, ull run into problems with moisture content or fae
