Super Simple, Outdoor, Spent & Contamanted Substrate Tek Like a Boss. 14

Lay substrate out flat in yard in a shaded area.

Cover with organic materials.

Heavily water substrate, and surrounding area.

Fruits beginning to emerge above wheat straw.
Fruits maturing.

Harvest.

-Any airy organic material can be used such as fresh grass clippings, etc. I opted to use wheat straw, because it is what was available.
-Heavily watering surrounding area helps increase an ample, RH filled micro-climate at surface of substrate while fresh air is naturally provided.
Another substrate outdoors beginning to flush.

Wish I had thought of this ham
I would throw my spents into the compost when I was cultivating, would get sporadic fruits all season, esp when I tilled the compost into the soil
But nothing like a straw casing would have done

Good read Ham. Did something similar with a couple bad cakes. Cased em in deer shit, some light soil, last years tall grass, then but a couple boards on top by a grassy gnoll at the base of a wood pile. Wont be suitable weather for cubes till July august in this area but Azures may fair better. Not expecting anything but will remove the boards when the temps stay high and check with no expectations. Figure why not, natures a tough bitch and might be suprised

SO here is the deal... I have 12 BRF cakes that I won't be able to get another full flush from due to uncontrollable circumstances. My question is, once I clean them of the shroomies left, can I take them outside and should I, 1) crumble them or 2) Grate them before putting in a patch? Would it be best to use organics as stated in this post, or could I use the natural organics found on the ground in the wooded area I was thinking of putting them that is near where I am currently?

Decided to strip what is left off the cakes, then dunk them for 2hrs, leaving them intact and then placing them tight together in a patch outside covered with organic matter and water the surrounding area to help with moisture content and humidity and just wait to see what comes of these. If they fruit... Bonus and if not, no great loss I suppose as the were going to end up in the trash before falling on this thread. Wish me luck!
Edited... Opted to put them in a buddies back yard near the garage and covered loosely with some raking from his lawn

 We shall see I guess!?

Cool, man, yea. Good idea on the dunking, and I'm glad you didn't crumble them.
As far as casing materials, anything will work, so long as it helps hold up RH at the surface. I've used fresh grass clippings before.

This is the only way I grow pf cakes now. when I have a mono or two going I do up cakes with friends who want to start their adventure in mycology. I fire some pf cakes under my straw mulch in my organic weed garden and get very meaty fruits. needless to say they become very exited to learn the trade.

I have something similar going now.I buried some cakes and subs under some straw mulch,(bale of straw/manure?other? composting since last year) here and there.Discovered this this morning in a pot of mint.Gonna use this straw casing tek to "finish them off" now.

Unfortunatly, the slugs found it before me.Don't want to derail, but what are you guys doing for pests?(slugs mainly and effin squirrels keep digging shit up )

Safflower seeds are bitter to squirrels, so you could put some of those in the dirt. Strobe lights, motion actives sprinkler, hot peppers, and moth balls are a few natural ways to repel squirells too.
Crushed egg shells, and coffee grounds sprinkled onto the soil around what you're trying to protect will discourage, and deter slugs.

Ok, sorry for my ignorance but if the cake/substrate you are putting outside to fruit is contaminated will this not cause contaminated fruits? I guess I don’t fully understand why it’s ok to do it outside, but not inside... aside from having contamination growing in your home.

Some of you guys are over thinking it.
Just bury your cakes with something that can retain moisture, and keep the layer on top of the cake loose/thin. Shade, and a constant source of water are a plus (sprinklers).
This was from digging a small hole next to sprinklers/plants, and dirt was all that was used.

Fruits from contaminated substrate are safe to eat, so long as there is no contamination growing on the fruit itself. The reason you want to remove a contaminated sub to outside is to separate it from your healthy subs inside, and your grow space in general

You should ask about breaking up your substrate in to said pot, as this is what I was unsure about.

This thread popped up for me a little while ago while researching ways to deal with spent substrate.
It influenced me to start a small substrate compost pile amongst the garden to deal with spent and extra materials.

Started the pile in early May. Comprised mainly of raked leaves & leftover garden soils (mostly peat, composted cow dung, black earth, vermiculite & perlite).
Been discarding cubes and oyster projects into the pile, including: -Coir/CVG prep leftovers -Spent CVG substrate -Leftover colonized alder sawdust (oyster) -Rye grain prep leftovers -Suspected contaminated Rye grain (no visible mold) -BRF cake prep leftovers -Spent BRF cakes -Leftover stalk trimmings from harvest -Paper towels littered with spores from harvesting/drying stages -aborts
Was happy to see the pile seems to be full of life... lots of earthworms, lots of mycelium and a small patch that must have sprung up a day or two ago!
I haven't given it any care whatsoever, but i may just have to start giving it some more attention

Nice work, locospacebean!
I've been trying this a bit, but kind of half assed... its so hot every day here that its a real struggle to keep any outdoor areas watered. 90+ daily with no rain

I took some cedar chips and soaked them.
Bottomed watered the dry/spent substrates(Little less than 1/4 of a cup).
Laid out bottom layer of soaked cedar chips on the ground.
Laid down spent substrate flat on top.
Laid top layer of soaked cedar chips lightly on top of the substrate.
The pile gets water daily.
Hoping for the best.
Awesome Thread!

Couple shots of my outdoor disposal area. All my contaminated subs get buried, bacterial & spent subs get covered in organic matter depending whats on hand, & all the excess CVG I have left over after spawning gets chucked there too. After so long I cover it all in soil then repeat, going to try and use it in the garden after awhile decomposing. Bacterial APE shoe boxes, fruit with a pretty shade of blue, and a shot where the mycelium colonized a pine stick with some CVG next to the sub and fruited
Hi Hamloaf, I know your got to be busy with that new spawning room I saw you post in the cult pic of the day, hope all is well!

I think these guys have aborted or either badly bruised.

Success!!!
It's been raining everyday for the past week so I'm sure they are loving that and the cloud cover.
I really didn't think I was going to get anything. But that shows you how much I know!
Do you think there's the slightest chance if I let the fruit mature and spore. It will spread?
Or just eat it...

You could do something like harvest the fruit, take a spore print on some papertowl and then just add the papertowel into the garden. Seems to biodegrade pretty well and i like to think it's making a difference by keeping the spores in the ecosystem, although i dont know if it's actually effective or not. The mycelium in my garden seems to be spreading really well but i do just let the majority of the mushrooms live out their entire life cycle. It does seem to help though.

with your substrate pile!!! Those ferns make it look like a very majestic spot!!! Love it!

Quite a few aborted but I'm proud of my one for sure!!!

Couple weeks ago i found a jar of inoculated rye grain that i'd totally forgotten about. It had been hidden away for over 2 months and had started pinning like crazy, as you can see.

I was feeling lazy and decided to simply dump the jar into a gardening pot comprised of about 40% composted cow manure, 25% garden soil, 25% perlite & 10% chopped up wheat straw. Spawn to substrate ratio was probably about 1:2.
Left it on my patio and about 2 weeks later:

Had a 32Qt that I harvested 5 1/2oz. from. There was a suspicious spot the I surgically removed and salted during my last indoor flush and decided to put it outside. Since it has been outside it has already given me an additional 12g dry, so I figured I would post a current pic of how things are going. I have counted over 25 pins popping up since yesterday after harvesting the last mature fruits. Put some fresh grass clippings just before pics, but you can still see them pushing through.
Loving this so much and appreciating the extra fruit 100%!!! I have actually gone out a few days ago just picking and eating a few so there is probably a few grams missing from the 12g dried. LOL

Finally got my first outdoor fruits! And some bugs enjoyed their share of the caps
Stem on the larger one was caked in the manure compost I had put over the top of the buried subs, so I cut a thin layer off the stem with a knife to remove it.

Snails love outdoor shroomies! Out of the three times I have harvested my patch outdoors, I always seem to find at least one or two that have been munched on loll

Awesome thread.
Ive got a couple of cakes showing contams
For the sake of outdoor success, should I let the myc continue to colonize? Or dump a cake outside at the 1st sign of contam?

Personally, i'd dump it right away. I don't like letting contams linger anywhere near my grow or incubation areas. If you decide to dump them into your compost pile, i like to make sure i open the jars outside, give them a wash outside and i change my clothes and throw them into the washer as soon as i get back inside. I don't like the idea of contams getting on my clothes while working in the compost pile, hitching a ride back into my grow area, so i'm pretty cautious about it.

So I made this yesterday, but noticed this thread again today and I figured this is appropriate for discussion here. I made this patch from 30qt TLY spawn that was a little bit bacterial. It is inside of a barn that lets light under the walls, but is the most shaded area I have on the property. I did not water the patch once I made it, which I pressed down by walking on it, but the mud was sticky and the mulch moist from rain. I figure it's damp, but I don't wanna flood it either.

I just realized this was more of a thread about a tek to follow than just about posting pics of outdoor grows using contaminated subs. I hope its cool if I still post here. This is my spent sub pile that recently got 15 shoeboxes that were about to pin but... The bitch trich showed up. So I decided to line the pile with the subs and covered it in a bag of black kow. I've kept a tarp over it most the time (about a week) but yesterday it rained so I uncovered it. Cant tell if those are new pins or the rain just uncovered some pins that were already there. Hopefully they grow. It would be so cool to get a big flush out of this thing but its certainly not expected.
If its cool I'll post pics if anything happens with this.

That's a great looking patch! Weather here is still a bit cool but hoping my patch comes back strong this year.
I was thinking of watering with a compost tea at the start of the season. I've gotta do a bit more research to see if that's even a good idea or not!

Second flush comming in. Decided to stop fighting the tarp and see what happens when you plant a forest of WBS on top for climate control/shade.

Cool looking patch. I was dumping my contam'd rye grain, covered with mulch and i think between the mice, squirrels and whatever other critters showed up, they pretty much ate all of it. LOL You're likely to find one hell of a bird frenzy around that patch!
I'm hoping some little strands of mycelium withstand those tiny digestive tracts... it'd be great to start seeing mushrooms popping up all over the neighborhood!

I love all these outdoor beds! Definitely going to start some up when I begin to finish up some shoeboxes, I heard when making ourdoor beds to keep the subs intact and not break them up, kind of makes sense, just need to rehydrate then!
Would love to see some more posts.

Picked this monster from my outside patch yesterday.
I really enjoy after a rain going outside to find these.
