    #2518971 - 04/02/04 02:53 PM (12 years, 8 months ago)

What's the best way to sterilize your casing before adding the substrate, my foaf microwaved like many teks said but he was unsucsessful (sp?), can anyone tell me the best ways or any other teks that might be useful?

Thanks

Hey man, I'm new to this as well but have been told (and read) that casings don't have to be sterilized, they should be pasterized(boiled at 170 degrees for two hours). Something about how sterilization kills almost all micro organisms and pasterization leaves "good" micro organisms behind to aid with mycel growth and defend against contam's. I haven't decided if I want to try this though. I had planned on PCing my casing in quart jars. Thataway I can use what I need and then replace lid and keep casing sterile for patching. Hope this helped, be sure to read up on this, shroomery has a good casing reference section!

thanks for all the answers, anyways my foaf has nuked his first casing for 5 mins let it cool and nuked again for another 5 mins and casing still got contams, so i was wondering when you guys nuke, do you leave the top off, or u put some plastic wrap (whatever the name of it is) on top and then nuke? can you explain me your procedure please. Thanks again...

today i started my first casing... I used a plastic (microwavable) bowl and yes I covered it with enough wrap to create a seal. After about 4 minutes though on high power it looked like it was about to explode so I took it out, mixed it up , then popped it back in but left a small opening in the wrap so it would still get nice and steamy in there but not destroy anything.

you should probably pay attention to it while it cooks so if something starts to melt you can take it right out. It's cool afterwards..the wrap will like vaccuum suck onto the top of the mixture if you let it. It acts like a natural contam barrier until after it cools off and you are ready to apply it to your casing

^^^ yeah it's just that easy. Let it cool real well before you case and youre good. Your friends contam was probably do to improper casaing proceedure or a dirty enviroment. REad all of joshuas posts on casing for an indepth overview of how it should be done and try again.

If this is the case, either your afoaf's microwave doesn't work or the contams entered after sterilization!

I mix up the casing mix. Put into jars with just a little added moisture. PC it and let it cool. Poor right out of the jar on to the substrate.
