My brother
    #25184340 - 05/04/18 03:58 PM (5 years, 9 months ago)

My brother has a history using hard drugs, including heroin and meth. I am concerned he is still on meth because of some physical health problems. My mom, who is also aware of the drug use, believes it is just a thyroid problem. He is a year younger than me (mid 20s) and looks 15 years older than me. He is losing patches of facial hair and it's thinning in other places. On his chin, a large chunk of it just turned white. The guy has been through hell, but he put himself through it.

Meth or a thyroid problem? :frown:

Could be meth, could be health issues from past drug use, could be a thyroid thing... although given the circumstances that seems like the least likely reason.

I'd be more inclined to say it would be the meth from what you are describing, how long has/had he been using?

Probably both.  Meth usage can cause thyroid and hormonal issues.  I used it very infrequently for a bit, but when I did it would be multi day benders.  I would get swollen feet and hands after/during.  Gained a ton of weight.  Had a ton of health issues all come up at once.

It sucks but maybe an intervention is in order, or at least talk him into seeing a therapist without threatening him with giving up the addictions.  People have to choose to stop living that way, they can't be forced.  If you can get him into therapy of some sort they might be able to address some of the underlying mental issues that lead him to want to get high to begin with.

Sorry op.  My brother has a lot of issues as well, as do/did I.  It sucks to see and have happen.

Thanks all. I am a little relieved because he seems to be more stable than he was about 2 months ago. Long story short, a couple years ago he moved back in-state and instead of attending college classes my mom paid for, he chose to party and ended up around meth users. Both he and his (now) ex turned into meth junkies, and decided to sober up when she got pregnant - my bro doesn't even know if it's his kid because the slut was sleeping around and having unprotected sex with several partners, but he stuck around anyway and got attached. His ex cheated on him (inevitable) and it put him in a really bad place. He's still not over her. Still trying to find a way to make it work. Up until the time that she cheated, we all knew that they weren't getting along, and she was mistreating him. He started balding, which we thought was just alopecia areata from dreads, but then he started losing patches of facial hair and had facial hair turning white. He also started aging pretty fast. It seems to have slowed, though. Might also just be pics. I haven't seen him in person for almost 2 years now. His ex is saying he is doing drugs (meth) again and that's why she cheated/left. While that may well be possible, I think she is a manipulative liar and she might be exaggerating.

I don't know how long or how often he uses or has used those drugs; he doesn't talk to me about it. All of these physical problems and signs started showing up within the last 6 months, though.

Well, at the very least try to convince him to see a doctor and possibly a counselor.  A lot of people are averse to trusting therapy, but it can be a huge benefit in ways you never even realize until much later.

Hope you can coax him into it, especially if the kid is possibly his.

I don't know the intimate details of your brother's life but if he does have legitimate health issues than the meth abuse will greatly have exasperated the issues.

It is a difficult situation to be in, especially with family. I've never had to confront any siblings about their drug abuse and negative consequences on their health however. When I was strung out and facing my own health issues while juggling homelessness , meth and heroin abuse there was very little anyone could say or do to convince me otherwise until I had made the decision myself.

All you can do is provide emotional support, belive him about his health problems and encourage him he seek help.

Just my two cents on the topic.
