Can I mix Colonized Sub with More sub
    #25183146 - 05/04/18 04:04 AM (3 years, 14 days ago)

So I have a little container colonizing with some grains and coir. It really wasn't enough grains now that im thinking about it. Like maybe 1/6th of the volume is grain.

Its not gonna yield shit, but some pewny mushrooms.

Can I mix that once it hits 100% with more colonized grains and some more coir?

or is that a no no?

Yeah. Idk im not using a huge tub. its just little rubbermaid containers and shit. I could do it inside a SAB.

Weather or not its gonna contam on me tho, idk. I might just grow out the pewny shrooms and use the rest of my grains on a better proportioned tray

Bulk substrate are used to provide water.

Grains provide the nutrients. Each grain is densely packed with enough nutrients to grow several mushrooms.

By super spawning you are effectively reducing the amount of grain in your substrate and making the mycelium move its resources further. This will reduce the amount of over all mushrooms you get per amount of substrate.

In the end, the sub will produce mushrooms proportional to the amount of grain spawn used.

Again, super spawning lowers the grain ratio so you get less mushrooms proportional to grain in the over all sub.

Well im not exactly super spawning.

I have maybe a 1/4 inch layer of grains, sandwiched by a inch of coir.
Ik its not gonna yeild very well.

I have another jar of grains thats almost fully colonized.
Once its finished colonizing, can I take the tray I have colonizing rn, break it up, and mix it with the grains that are about to be ready, and put some coir ontop?

That way there's enough grains.
All everything im adding that can contam is going to be 100% colonized before mixing. Idk i feel like it might be more worth while to do it that way, but at the same time I'd rather get some fruits than none.

Oh yeah. I think that would be fine. Just mix it really good.

I might not even do that, depends on if i end up fruiting my tray before the jars done colonizing.

The amount of grains will only affect the size of the mushrooms right? its not going to make it take decades to produce fruits?

The amount of grains will affect the over all yield. Genetics will affect size.

Thats a tub with a very low spawn ratio. Like 1 grain jar for 1/2 a bucket tek.

The mushrooms were plenty big. Just not very many of them.

hangon let me see if I can get a pic, and you can tell me if i'll get at least enough of a yield to enjoy it once lmao.

Thats the container. Its been colonizing for like 2-3 days, see there's not too much grain. Theres a little bit more on some sides, 1 side has literally 1 chunk of grain.

Think it'll yield anything at least?

It will yield an 8th dry if you baby it. Lots of fresh air and keep it gently moistened while allowing time for moisture to evaporate.

Something so small would be better to fruit as is. How much grain is colonizing still in the other jar?

probably like 2x that

The "spawn" was initially a ghetto cake I made with Manure enriched potting soil. It had some wood and some verm in it, and the myc took to it quiet well.

I spawned one of the containers to that because it had dried out and stalled. I just gloved up, sterilized everything, pasteurized the coir took everything that was uncolonized off the 'cake' it was maybe like 40% colonized.

here I have a pic. The set up it all wrong, i already know i dont wanna hear it lol its working.

Thats how much of the other spawn I have. (Ignore the dry rice layer on top ik its stupid, but it seemed to have served its purpose)

Thats an old pic, now its to the top of the myc all the way around.

Also, considering the huge amount of coir, can I fruit it open air? Just mist it so it stays hydrated? I live in the midwest and its already quite humid too lmao

Fruiting in open air is always possible. A plastic baggy over the top might be better.

Its humid in the midwest?
