Just a couple Agates I've come across in my outdoor adventures here at home. The black and blue and white was found in that condition, cut faced and polished, in the backyard of a home my sister purchased in the Black Hills. Wonderful gemstones.

The sand on the coast is relentless right now still covering most gravel beds. I'm going out tomorrow to scout again but this year has been slow. I've seen all the beaches open up late as april before though.
I also own the jumpin jeep agate mine in the painted hills of central oregon if you ever want to go.

As spring approaches I'm definitely down to hang out and go houdning- girlfriend and I both love agates!
I'm trying to learn more about all the different geological features in oregon- the great basalt floods 17 million years ago, the stacking on of different rock and sedimentary layers from tectonic plate movement over 200 million years, etc.
Crazy stuff!

Thanks for posting that, I didn't know there were agates in the Verde Valley and I'm about to move out there.

In 3 picking seasons, I haven't found any gems or agates or coins on the coast or mountains. No fulgurite, either, but I heard some people spend a lifetime not finding any.

Most rockhounding places are known about and can be researched. A lot of them are being shutdown right now by Groups like the wildlands project who has been privatizing or buying our blm lands. I witnessed this first hand at the access road to the red canyon trail leading to the orocopia wilderness where there is an old fluorite mine. I was kicked out just after parking at the first pullout. The original blm sign with the map of the area welcoming ohv use was and might still be there. They were big guys in big vehicles. The army was out there too doing something. You're not gonna find something that doesn't occur there. There is also the blm lr2000 site that lists all mineral claims across the us. That doesn't stop people from making new discoveries every year.

No, it's too hard to find much but if you're lucky I think the ranch still lets people surface collect. Hansen cr is a a for sure easy spot to find and dig. I think they closed the road going in though so you have about a half mile hike in then up now. I lucked out and found someone's tripod and screens when I was last there, left them there in good shape, just borrowed them, and we dug so many nice purple scepters and singles and clusters. Every single shovel scoop from under this old stump pit was loaded. people say it's overdug now but I can't see how that spot could ever become depleted. There are just a lot of pits up there and a lot of tailings. A lot of people love red top mt for agate nodules but I have never done it.
