That is an awesome A. caput-medusae, Ferrel. Do you keep yours outdoors, in the rain, year round? And what about that Aztekium valdezianum on the back of the first picture?

Yup. Out year round. It has been a fairly good year and the rrock helps with not retaining too much water.

Ahh ypu got a good eye Zed. Thats my aztekium hintonii. Thats under my shade cloth. With all my peyote.

That's interesting news for me. I find Astrophytum caput-medusae a bit sensitive to drying over winter (a paradox, since it possesses an enormous tuberous root) and it makes total sense that it is kept out in the open. Actually, I find all Astrophytum benefit from some drops of water over winter to keep them plump, especially when they're youngish. Under our not too cold conditions, at least.

And of course it's Aztekium hintonii, silly me. Nice plant.

Thanks Ferrel! When I unpotted it they turned out to be 3 separate plants. So now I have 3 small Bishop's Caps. They each had a tap root and healthy feeder roots growing off the tap.

The first one is a graft I bought and the second one is a 2014 seedling. The flowers on the first are easily twice as wide as the flower on the other.

Last season I've had my first seed grown lophophora, turbinicarpus and ariocarpus flowering.
And now it will be astrophytum time !

I think this plant is more than two years old. It comes from the first flush of astro seeds I've ever planted. Sadly, at the time I was (and I am still) terrible at growing things  So the plant isn't very big.
It's a degraft, four-header with a bit of pereskiopsis stalk. And I'm pretty sure this plant has a pereskiopsis root system.

Astros are my weakness. I can't get them to do things, neither grafted nor on own roots. This plant is a lovely one which beared my horrible care :awesomenod:

Lovely astros Ferrel!
My myriostigma "Onzuka seminudum" flowered today, wish my other astro was flowering so I could pollinate them.

Astrophytums aren't self fertile, right?

Time has come. My first seed grown astrophytum to flower is an asterias.

I pollinated it with my myriostigma nudum which is in bloom since middle spring and does not show any will to stop anytime soon :awesomenod:

I would add that my two astrophytums myriostigma are highly fertile with each other. They attract flying ants, bees and other insects because of their big and fragrant and nectary flowers. I don't know if it's the case for all astrophytums myriostigma but mine are putting on quite a show. I didn't count but in one growing season, they put out at least 15 flowers each. Every flower sets a fruit containing up to 30 seeds. I'll end up with more astro seeds than I can sow
