Centrifuge tube as slant 1

Quick question, can I put centrifuge tubes in a pressure cooker? I have a huge bag of centrifuge tubes and want to use them to make slants with but don't know if they can be pressure cooked.

Short answer is yes. Can we see a picture of them to confirm they are the usual ones we see around here?
What are they made out of? Plastuc or glass?

Yea most of them are PP and have orange PP caps. Those are safe for PC.

IF in doubt, PC just one and see it if survives.
I use the 50ML ones. I have yet to see any that are not PP5, but I am sure there are some really cheap Chinese ones out there that are not.

Some of the lids are polyethylene but the only problems I have had with the 50 ml centrifuge tubes is they can deform if the lids are not left real loose while pressure cooking them and I've cracked some lids by tightening them too much. I've never tried pressure cooking the lids separate while not on the tubes partway but they might melt or deform enough not to fit anymore if they are polyethylene.
Most of the sites I have found don't specify what material the caps are made from but Falcon™ 50mL Conical Centrifuge Tubes specifically says Includes: Blue 33mm polyethylene flat-top screw caps (threaded to fit Corning Falcon tubes only).

that can happen with any pp5 that has no GE. they melt/deform. especially if you pull a vacuum
i use these. PC 15 for 15. backed off cap with some foil. i like the ones that stand upright

Except mine usually go in with my bottles of agar so they go 30 min.

FYI, the 2ml micro ones are nice for cutting up a plate into ready to use wedges and then store in zip lock bag in fridge. When you need to start up a new plate just pull a micro and remove the ready wedge.

Actually the ones I have are 1.5ml, tiny babies, and I was going to make small master slants with them. They have the snap caps attached. But now that I'm thinking more clearly this morning I think I'll just buy some regular full size ones

How long can wedges stay good like that? It sounds like a good way to store cultures without taking up much space.

I think I have 1.5 ml tubes that I used to mail wedges of edible cultures in. I also got the very tiny 0.5 ml ones but haven't actually used them for anything yet. Those ones were very cheap from ebay and would probably work for trading cultures but would be a little harder to get the wedges in and out of.
Another idea from Ferather is to use the vials to hold his wood toothpick pieces for trading edible cultures. I intend to try his toothpick idea soon for oyster (or other wood loving cultures) but the same thing should work for any culture if the "pegs" were soaked in a malt extract solution or some other liquid media.

Yup those are like the tubes I have. Hmmmm I wonder, if I were to take toothpick pieces, soaked in malt water, sterilized, stick them vertically in a circular fashion around an agar dish, place a piece of mycelium in the middle let it grow out and colonize the wood pieces, then pull them out and stick them into a vial with agar in it. Hmmmm. Just maybe.

I believe it to be relevant and i thought this idea was standout; it was on purpose. I'm wondering if anyone still uses this method successfully and for how long.
