Hello I tried to follow all the correct inoculation procedures. I just noticed this red spot in one of my grain jars and its in the bottom of the jar. Can anyone tell me what this is?

It definitely looks bad. Im not sure if your grains or bacterial or theyre just really wet. I wouldnt risk keeping this jar. How did you prep your grain jars?
Also, myc piss (metabolites) usually looks more yellow, the color in the jar looks red almost.
Can anyone else verify?

Piss is usually yellow, if you're pissing red you best check that out.

This is not mycelium piss. Mycelium doesnt urinate. Its not metabolites either.
It's either an insane amount of rust from metal where you drilled holes or you have a rare case of red / pink mold or bacteria.

Please let it grow out. I want to see a big red contaminated jar. That would be a good one for tmethyl's thread.

I could have helped you out with that big red jar last summer. I just tossed it and didn't take a pic.

Hello amy1193, During the sterilization of the Grain in the jars, I forgot to cover the lids with aluminum foil, so I believe the grains got a bit more moist than they were supposed to be. The mold is at the bottom of the jar. I placed the jar inside of the refrigerator to slow dowen the growth. The top layer still looks fine. I am thinking about doing a G2G from the top of the jar to a clean jar and see if that spoonful of grain has contaminates.

Hello ShroomyToons, I would save the jar ,but I need the space and jar.The top layer still looks fine. I am thinking about doing a G2G from the top of the jar to a clean jar and see if that spoonful of grain has contaminates.

I wouldnt recommend doing that, if its contaminated with mold, theres a possibility that you will spread in into your grow area. Its still up to you though.
Even if it isnt mold, there still a high chance of bacteria. Most of the grains look like they burst already, its a risk to expose it to open air.

I wouldnt. Opening the jar could potentially compromise your grown area or other jars you have or colonizing tubs. Not really worth the risk in my opinion. If youre going to reuse the jar pressure cook it before dumping the mold but i definitely wouldnt open that or try a g2g. I would just toss it.

I 2nd this notion.
OP must grow the mold for science!
Nah but fr thats wild. Google's making me think that molds pretty rare too. Its probably really toxic so i'd keep the jar closed forever. Dont bother trying to save it lmao.

It's in the jar so it shouldn't spread. You could grow it out for the thread if you wanted.
Just wash the jar like your dishes and reuse when your done.
Dump it in your garden or in the woods. I don't like dumping them in the trash myself. Edit: I wouldn't open the jar indoors.
Or you could trash the whole thing?

I've had a few jars I just threw away. Not sure what was in them, but looked freaky and scary and I didn't want to chance breathing it.
Took pics of one:

How long should I soak the WBS before I put the grain inside the jars and sterilize the grain ?

4-24 hours. With WBS, soaking isn't necassary though, so you can skip the soak-step if you want to. https://www.shroomery.org/forums/showflat.php/Number/24952939#24952939
