IF you can get oats to work fro you, go for it. There is a HUGE difference in price for you. I would like to use only wheat as its only $24 for 50lb, and oats are $14 for 50lb. I have found a BIG difference with wheat, BUT I do have some good oat grows so I am thinking wheat masters 2g2 into bags of oats, as the oats will colonize much faster this way than from a plate or liquid inoculant, IMO. Bod or Ham may be able to get great results using plates or liquid straight to oats, but I have some issues still.

I've tried them and taken my stance...
We'll just say that the oats in my area are... sub par, so I steer clear of them.
Rye...
And, mad, the price of grains flux depending on area and time of season.
I can get 50lb of oats for $12-13. Or... the last bushels of rye i bought were $15.25 a bushel (56lb). Which is actually a $1 more a bushel than last time... maybe I should start slinging grains on here...

True, like Maddy said though you have to find what works best for you in your own unique situation. To outright put down any grain choice used as spawning material, because it didn't work well for you is bad advice though, homie.

The first few oz of shrooms I ever baught were dried by appliance fans and they kept just fine... All a dehydrator is is a heat source and airflow.

Dude I had considered that as well. I'm in a bread basket, I just need to hook up with farmers with clean supplies and cut out as many middle men as possible. I think I could get like 20lbs, maybe more, of wheat in the big flat rate box.

Is it a water conservation issue like popcorn or what? I just wonder. Rye has always worked out for me so i stick with it. But im curious about trying diff grains. Altho. I like the rye shelf life (if packaged and stored well) and if theres no real difference then its just reallt about price. I would get WBS but is it true they contam faster than rye does? My own project with WBS was just a few mycobags and i never used it again. Worked well though. I just like to have grains i can keep for a while.
so whats your issue with oats? Anything obvious or just, not your thing? Keep in mind, never used them.
ALSO: (about drying) when youre growing more than a few cakes (like a tub, even 1-2 qt) and its warm or humid out, i would really suggest not using a fan and instead using a dehydrator. You can pack it full of fruit and itll dry it all perfectly where my PE from 2015 is still cracker fucking dry (i checked recently). With the fan if its humid, you could be running it all night and you might still not have dry mushies. I had that issue 3 summers ago, before even switching to grains, when i ran like 10 cakes. I would dry a half oz, and it just wouldnt STAY dry. Again, if youre in a cool climate, this might be less of a problem but it really sucks if you dont know how to dry a full flush or whatever and dont have a dehydrator. Even with that, if i leave em out in the dehydrator in the humidity for like an extra 5 hours, theyll start getting wetter again, and thats how shrooms go bad. Its one of the worst common things that can happen after an awesome, successful grow. I dont see it addressed much (not everyone lives where its so humid, somedays i wouldnt even need a SGFC if i wanted to do cakes LOL)
but yes dehydrator IMO is just as important as a PC. One at the beginning and one to finish up the project. People tend to not think about that, just being happy with a good grow. I had to run out and frantically buy a Nesco one day lol. And tip: if theres not enough room or you cant dry, keep freshies in the fridge in a mason jar, no more than 48 hrs tops

When using Producers Pride brand oats from Tractor Supply Company I tend to see a lot more bacterial contamination and usually trich before the 2nd flush finishes... just my exerience so far.
If you're gonna play around with a new grain, I reccommend doing trials on the side away from your steady work flow. Just my suggestion. That way just in case...

10g wet approximately equals 1 g dry. Though I find a normal dose is more like 30g or 25 g wet though.

i really love rye. if you have a local health food store, maybe even whole foods, you can usually place an order for a 50lb bag through the store and avoid paying shipping. i think i got 50lbs for around 40 50 bucks. its a good way to avoid shipping cost, hope this helps anyone.

I like my local "Farm Town" store. They even sell fertilizers and soils I have only seen in hydro magazines. I need to see what grains they have besides wheat, like rye or milo. I should give their oats a try, see if they are any better, since their wheat is clean as hell. I know they buy theirs straight from a farmer or local elevator because it just comes in a white bag with a label sown into the top seam of the bag.
