Bruising or Trich? * 1
    #25158849 - 04/22/18 09:59 PM (6 years, 8 months ago)

What do y'all think?

Rye berries colonized then cased with vermiculite. There are fruits growing on this currently and I really gave it a good misting last night then this was here this morning.

I'd say brusing. It looks too blue to be trich.

Let's see what the others have to say.

Not sure, my untrained eye says bruising.

Curious why you used 100% vermiculite. I didn't think that was nornally recommended for a casing layer

I'm not using a specific tek I've been doing this on my own for about 5 years now based off of research and trial and error of my own experiments. I've found that the vermiculite helps prevent infection and provide moisture as well. My methods may be a bit unconventional but I always find a way to make it work.

Ahhh ok. Just wondered. Whatever works I suppose. A lot of people add peatmoss and coco coir with the verm I believe, or verm
peatmoss, gypsum, some use jiffy mix. Maybe you already know this

What do you spawn to? Just curious since you don't follow teks and maybe it's something new and interesting I've never heard before

Vermiculite doesn't prevent anything. It's non nutritious so it wont contaminate on it's own but the real protection comes from full colonization. If your sub is fully colonized it's already as contam resistamt as it's gonna get.

If your substrate is already contaminated the infection will grow beneath the vermiculite. Contaminate comes from the inside. Fully colonized substrates that are clean will not contaminate in open air until the mycelium is spent.

You've got bruising there. Are you misting often?

People always worry about their substrates contaming from exposure to air. The only time this is ever something to worry about is when you're dealing with uncolonized sterilized mediums.

Good information, however I have done it both ways (with and without verm) and found that more often when no verm contamination occurs could be coincidental. But since my environment never changes much I can only assume its the verm.

Definitely looks like bruising. Looks like your cake-bulk tray is drying out.
