Pressure Cooker Mishap
    #25166120 - 04/26/18 05:04 AM (6 years, 8 months ago)

I fell asleep while I was pressure cooking some jars. They were on the stove for bout 7 hours on the lowest setting. Are they still salvageable?

Did the cooker run out of water? If so then the jars are definitely scorched.

That many hours in the PC burns the grains even if it didn't run out of water. That means that you're going to see extremely slow colonization and may even stall out. I'd start over.

Bodhisatta had something similar happen to him and had those problems. He let the PC on the stove for 12 hours or so coz he also fell asleep and something else...

There is still water in the cooker and it does not look dry or scorched at all.

If it doesn't look scorched then it's not scorched. The grain gets real dark it's pretty obvious. You are probably fine if it looks OK but grains are really cheap and it's probably best to redo it if you can.

I guess you left the temp real low when you passed out. Was it still at pressure when you found it?

I don’t think it was at pressure but there was still steam going. They don’t look soaked either. I’m going to wait a couple of days and make sure they don’t contaminate and only inoculate one and wait to see if there is growth.

You can warp your pc running it dry. It can ruin it. You still had steam so you're probably ok but I wouldn't make a habit of resting your eyes during a cycle.

First time it’s happened. It’s definitely not a habit.
