Parafilm alternative will shrink wrap work too?
    #25163879 - 04/25/18 06:53 AM (5 years, 9 months ago)

So I've been looking parafilm and how pricey it is and as I fell down the internet rabbit hole of parafilms I found that they make a parafilm grafting tape for trees and it seems to be the same thing as the medical type without the medical price tag. But then Google popped up the big rolls of shrink wrap they sale at uhauls and office supply stores so as I was looking into this I found that they sale them in smaller widths down to 3 inches. So would shrink wrap work for dealing up afar plates? I can get a 3" wide 1000 ft long roll of shrink wrap for 5 bucks that's cheaper than any parafilm roll out there.

Whatever wrap works. Cheapest is fine.

I prefer parafilm, it's only like $22 for about a years worth.

But in a pinch I have used plastic wrap rolls cut down to one inch with a D-saw, I know many others have as well.

If you dont want to use parafilm go get a roll of glad cling wrap and cut the roll into 1 inch sections with a chefs knife catefully.  Its still permeable and allows a small amount of GE.

you may notice I don't use parafilm very often, I prefer saran wrap myself, you can use either or. to use saran wrap take the whole roll out of the carton. and cut the roll into one inch wide mini rolls. use each mini roll to make at least two revolutions around the dish and pull it to snap it off which will make a nice seal. When you unwrap the dishes the saran wrap makes a good surface to put in between two dishes so that they don't slide around on each other as much. Saran wrap is quicker for me, I don't have to pre-prepare cutouts of it like parafilm aside from the original making of the mini rolls. It's also quite a bit less expensive. although parafilm works out to be very cheap per dish anyway.

Also when I tryed a saw or anything electrical it melts the plastic together messing it up so I lije a sharp chef knife I got at walmart with the cling wrap for $5

I've used the press and seal stuff before and  it worked good when the cut down roll would work properly. That's why I'm looking g fid something that is already in the 2 inch wide size so I dont have to cut wrap roll and make a messed up roll.

The Parafilm for plants can't be used like Parafilm M. It lets too much shit through. Either the right Parafilm or plastic wrap is what you want. Don't just make a fucked up roll of plastic, buy a separate roll and cut lots of 1" slices. You'll have wrap for several cases of petris. The cheapest wrap you can find will work.

I just got back a giant roll of Parafilm that I gave to a buddy at least 4 years ago. Still good cause it was in a plastic bag. Got some 6 year old minimum uninoculated slants that still look good too.

I use a utility knife by stabbing the point in around the diameter of the roll and then finishing the cuts by rocking the blade.  I've also used a bread type knife to saw through the roll.

I would never use my chef knife on that task. I have an expensive knife though.

Kitchen shears work well.

As much as you mignt think that, shitty tempering is still shitty tempering.

A good chef knife used 8 hours a day 5 days a week shouldn't require polishing (sharpenning) more than once a month or steeling (truing) more than once every 2 weeks.

Anyone can make a blade sharp but if the steel is shit and the chef doesnt know how to properly polish it's going to dull daily.

I roll my eyes every time I see a chef steeling their blade before every single prep job.

Glad cling wrap cut like advised. Way cheaper than parafilm and last way longer

I cut it with a buck 110 hunting knife, no issues at all

You should steel your blade every use like multiple times a day. That's even for high carbon Japanese $1000 knives. At least that's what I've known and seen. Then you don't need to sharpen it often if ever besides a polish. The knife is so sharp even end grain cutting boards will microscopically peen over the edge. Shitty steel still cuts anything I'm eating just fine though. Just does require some sharpening now and then which eventually will make the blade shape smaller after years.

Assuming you're talking about single bevel yanagiba when you say "high quality japanese knives" those should never be steeled.

Just polished once a month though I've known some chefs who do it more often because they like to make them shine.

I do a lot of seafood/sushi at work and I use a Wusthof classic santoku, not a super expensive sushi knife. I hit my steel before I do things like cutting sushi, raw tuna that's really too soft etc. Other than that, I haven't actually had to sharpen it in 3 years and it's still basically as sharp as a fresh scalpel. I can slice a ripe tomato so thin you can see through it.

As long as were bragging, I was a sushi chef for 8 years. Went through 4 years of apprenticeship at a tiny hole in the wall. The knife I had was custom ordered by the man who taught me. It has literally been the only knife I've ever needed. You may be able to cut a tomato so thin you can see through it.

But can you perform katsuramuki?
