Lime-Soak and General Straw Pasteurisation Questions
    #25164315 - 04/25/18 11:02 AM (6 years, 8 months ago)

Having read hamloaf's Super Simple, From A to Z, Wheat Straw Pasteurization Bath Tek Like a Boss tek, I had a few questions for the community which I cannot seem to get answers for.

1, Is it true mycelium uses soap as a food? If so, why isn't it ever added as an addative in any of the teks?

---

2, Whilst looking at soaps I wanted to use something as plant based as possible, a true soap. I came across pure Liquid Castile Soap (https://www.amazon.co.uk/Pure-Liquid-Castile-Soap-5Kg), yet in the description it stated 'Contains no surfactants', am I right in thinking that castile soap is a natural surfactant anyway?

Second to castile soap, if it's not suitable as a wetting agent, I found ecover Zero dish soap which I think should be suitable for my needs and requirements (https://us.ecover.com/products/zero-dish-soap/), it states both Sodium lauryl sulfate and Lauryl/myristyl glucoside as plant derived surfactants.

EDIT: Apparently castile soap and and all natural plant based soaps are by their very nature a surfactant. Source: http://thelaundrytarts.com/surfactants/

---

3, Can you combine soap and lime together into one solution to do a 'quick' cold pasteurization?

4, Does 'cooked' straw (via steam pasteurization process) make the straw easier to digest than none-cooked cold lime pasteurization?

5, Can wood ashes be chucked into the mix for good measure if available, almost like a supplement?

^^ I'm working on the assumption that a diversity of substrate materials would be beneficial to growth.

6, The PH of the substrate is meant to drop after pasteurisation in a lime solution, what causes this drop?

7, Where does the beneficial bacteria on straw originate from? Airborne or from ground as straw grows (or somewhere else?)?

Thanks,
