So I tried something different..
    #25164232 - 04/25/18 10:16 AM (6 years, 8 months ago)

I was running seriously low on BRF (as in I didn't have any) and I wanted to use my pressure cooker..
So I remember an experiment I did back 8 years ago or so, when I had a stack of coffee cup carrier trays..I filled jars with the material they are made from (molded recycled cardboard) mixed with enough water to make them thoroughly wet and dusted with some BRF for insurance..and I had smashing success at the time..
So I mixed about 2 parts torn up cardboard material with the same amount of rolled outs and about 1.5 parts vermiculite and wet it all down to the consistency you usually get your BRF to before pressure cooking it..I go a little lighter on the water, because you don't want the oats to get mushy..and it worked perfectly! I got pics of everything but I don't have the phone handy so pics to follow but suffice to say the jars are at about the same point I would expect standard BRF jars would be at on day 4 (clearly visible blooms of mycelium on all the out clusters as well as on the cardboard pieces...
So by all means if you lack in some supplies for "traditional" growing tecs try something new and different...!!
I want to get some sugar cane and do an experiment with it as well...and coffee grounds are tried and true as far as an additive to a bulk tray or as an additive in BRF jars...
Happy Mushrooming!
