wanting to jump back in after some time off

Ok guys, had a few successful grows a few years back. I stopped a little over a year ago after I tried 2 unsuccessful rounds of inoculation into Midwest spawn bags. I had had nothing but success with them the previous times I used them and came to the conclusion that my spores may have been bad.
Essentially I want to get back in and do it the right way. Making my own jars or bags and doing everything the proper way without ordering kits.
So my questions are:
1) what is the best way to check if my spore syringes are viable
And
2) what tek would you suggest for the smallest, lowest profile grow possible just to get back into it? What tek would be also an easy way to check my spore viability?
Any help would be greatly appreciated!

The PF Tek is easy, low-maintenance, and works for small and large quantities. However, if you're really looking to get into this as a hobby, you might want to start with agar, since that's the best way to get a clean culture. Additionally, because you can get a clean culture and learn sterile technique in the process, it pretty much opens the door all the way.
How were your spore syringes stored? They stay viable for a long time if you keep them in the refrigerator.

I’m also wanting to jump back in. I’ve got a pretty decent spore collection but it’s all prints and I have this mental barrier going on that it’s hard to start from prints I keep saying to myself “if only I had sterile syringes made id start” but I know it’s not even harder necessarily to start from prints so I think I’m just being lazy

I think both questions can be answered by pftek. If youre trying to be minimal about it. Doing a round of brf jars should get some germination goin.
If you dont want a chamber u can use the ez af cheapest tek in bods sticky list. Just a bag over colonized jar.

They've been in my sock drawer in a ziplock bag. Room temp in the house is usually around 69 so a few degrees cooler than that and dark

I agree PF tek seems the best option for reducing supplies and complication.
Maybe consider spawning to bulk instead of the traditional SGFC.
Could actually save space compared to a SGFC and you wouldn't have to deal with perlite. I hate perlite.

Only way to know if the spores are viable is to try and use them.

Didnt someone make a syringe from old prints and let them hydrate with a rubber band on the plunger a few days for better results?
And im unclear how old your print or syringe is. I imagine a syringe at room temp would germinate after too long.

Do people generally go from print to agar to get clean myc growth? I'm unfamiliar

It’s surely one way you can do it. With an inoculation loop, scrape it on your print and streak it on your agar plate. Good way to see if they are viable too.

Because straight spores from alu foils are unclean as fuck, agar is the only way to go to avoid unnecessary contaminants fuckin up everything eventually... a necessary step thats all worth the effort.

I never understood how people kept prints clean which is why I never did them before..
If you clean then up in agar makes sense...
That's really good to know. I have someone who could benefit a lot from a print they could take to agar.
Those are completely legal as well huh? Safe to send via mail correct?
Thanks

you can take extra steps to make your spore prints somewhat cleaner, like, pc'ing your receiving pp5 plastic container with the foil already inside prior to printing.. or maybe dabbing the foil surface with 70% iso before printing... this techniques considerably cuts contaminants but still not 100%
..prints in most states are legal, with the exception of 2 or 3 states I think,,
