This is how i make re usable petri dishes * 1

Hello Shroomery. Just going to throw out this simple tek for using short mason jars as petri dishes.

The problem ive faced in the past with using mason jars is not being able to see the progress of the agar. So here is what i did. I used a 3 1/2 inch hole saw and a thin piece of plexiglass. This works perfectly for the rings on short wide mouth jars. They actually snap into the ring and stay in place.

The pilot bit on the hole saw puts a 1/4 inch hole in the center and that is stuffed with polyfil. If youre using a syringe to knock up your agar, you can inject straight through the polyfil.

As you can see, they work really well. I place them on my petri table which shows light through the bottom, making you disks visible. These are the short flat jars and it holds a wide mouth ring. You dont have to use as much polyfil as i did. These jars can be pre poured and pc'd over and over.

Yes, they are probably less expensive than plexiglass as well. I was fortunate enough to have gotten some sheets for free, but the plastic disks will work too.

So heres the next step.

Get plexi glass that is half as thick as the one you're using and instead of 1 sheet use 2 BUT you sandwich a little circle of SFD between the two pieces at the hole then glue the pieces together around the edge.

Voila, professional looking and perfectly clear with maximized visibility.

These are good pieces of advice. Plexiglass is horrendously expensive. I was given these pieces and they could stand to be a bit thinner.

Also that huge storm cloud of polyfil looks ridiculous. Very effective, but silly looking. Thought about other options to fill that hole, but nothing else i know actually breathes and can be penetrated and self heal like polyfil.i need to cut that back because it does block your view and makes close up photos impossible.

You said the plexiglass snaps into the ring? If you are able to take the lid off in one motion,
I wouldn't even put in a hole. Just crack the lid in an SAB or in front of a flowhood and
inoculate.

Thats a nifty idea...and the hole is drilled at the same time the plexiglass is cut...  How do they do in the pc?

Agar petris don't need holes for gas exchange. Pasty plates only have them so that the mini rounds don't collapse when you pc them. It would make the lids more versatile with the filter tho. You could use them for grains, and nocc up through polyfil if you're into that sort of thing. I think I would rather have no hole, increased visibility, and use them specifically for agar.

The hole in the middle is unavoidable when using a holesaw... You'd have to use something else to cut the plexiglass if you didn't want that hole there in the middle

They make them without a drill inside of them. Don't know how well it would work on plexiglass tho.

Ive pc'd them many times with no problem. Sometimes i even use the same polyfil. I can cut this polyfil back some i just leace it alone so not to accidentally contaminate the dish.

The plexiglass handles the pc with no change in its structure. These dishes already have quarter sized mycelium disks all of which are healthy and contamination free.

Yes, when doing transfers i lift the lid in one motion. I have this SAB that i work in and im able to place the master dish and the receiving dish on the little table in there. It works great. The LED lighting makes everything nice and visible.

Another mycology tool i made out of plexiglass.

I would just put some micropore tape over the hole...and having the hole there makes them multi-purpose

Thanks for this TEK.  I have put test pieces of plexiglass in the pressure cooker before but never tried making lids or anything out of them.  I'll have to find or buy the right size hole saw but it sounds like a great idea.  I think you could make the discs without the hole if you use a drill press and clamp the plexiglass down so nothing can move.  A little blob of silicone could cover the hole and make a SHIP instead of the fiberfill filter.

I added a link to this TEK in the ever growing link in my signature.

I believe plexiglass is acrylic. You haven't noticed any deformation of the lids from heat?

Nope, doesn't effect the plexiglass at all. Ive pc'd these 15 times at 2 hours 16psi and they stay firm and flat. The plexiglass im using is a little thick around 1/8" but thats the max. Anything bigger and your ring wont seal it down.

Im gonna use some thinner pieces when i get some for free, but i may just stick with these because they have worked so well.

Had a similar idea using the 4 oz jelly jar that I have a lot of for a no pour agar tek, using some kind of temperature tolerant sealing adhesive to fasten the Plexiglas circles onto the outside of the jar ring but didn’t have a comfortable way of cutting a circle in the Plexiglas without using a hole saw which would put a whole in the center of it. Then I saw these acrylic circles don’t know if it would be cost effective or not if you had to buy the jars & the acrylic circles. I haven’t tried anything yet, been absent from the hobby the last few years just starting to get back into it.
