Damn dirty side pins!

I just harvested a tub of mine and it had a ton of side pins that grew into full size mushies. I picked them all but they have coir basically imbedded in one side of the stem, is there an easy way to clean these off? I kept them seperste and was planning to use them for tea only, I don’t feel like eating a bunch of coir.

Worst case scenario, just tell yourself, "at least this isn't manure."

Get a razor blade, and cut off the coir. Start from top and cut into the mushroom flesh and slice down. You will lose a small amount of mushroom but it’s not a big deal, (not to me anyway) then if you don’t get it all use something to wipe the rest off, or brush it out.

XD wonder what that's like.. (I grow using manure only)
OP I've eaten fruits that had some nice manure on it. As mushboy suggested, once dried out, just rub off what you don't like and all will be well.

Does substrate come off easily after the shrooms are dried? I’ve always cleaned them fresh.

way easier to clean when dried, you can basically rub all the dirt off, or maybe brush it off

Thanks for the reply’s! I might try just rubbing it off but I have A LOT so depending on my patience I may say fuck it and use them for tea. Some of them were growing on the bottom of the sub too, I don’t think I nailed the surface conditions but hopefully I’ve learned and my next mono will do better. Almost 4oz dry from the first flush of 2 54qt monos isn’t too bad for my first time right?

Shit, I guess I’ll have to try that then. Guess that’s better than losing a couple grams cutting it off.

So I tried getting the coir off my mushrooms after being dried with it still on there.. uummm, not for me. It was a pain in the ass for me, that shit was stuck on there like concrete. I tried brushing it off, scraping with my finger nail, scraping with my razor blade, for some reason it took longer and was more tedious. So I went back to slicing it off with my razor blade (fresh). In the long run it’s just like if I were to cut them out of the substrate anyway ( instead of twisting them out). So I’m fine with it, I’m not really missing out on much when there are several ounces involved. To each their own.

Yeah dude, I tried the same thing and it was pretty tedious but maybe I was too picky trying to get every little bit off. I’ll just use those for tea

Yeah, I’m too picky too. I didn’t want any trace of substrate.

Haha and then there's me.. cleaning all my trays from the dehydrator in like 10 mins. Idk how to describe it. I just pinch the end basically and do a circular motion. Everything crumbles off. Easily less than 10 seconds per shroom. I use my finger nail if it's really stuck which rarely happens. Just needs a simple rub lol

a very small knife would scrape all of the dirt off of those stubborn shrooms.

I mean I guess I am both a chef and a mechanic so I'm pretty good with my hands. A knife would be nice, but it would be annoying to pick up and put down all the time. I've done like so many mushrooms now it's become second nature. I understand if people find it difficult or don't think it's worth it. It's just my own way of doing things, and since it's become routine, it's just easy af now.
