Starting grains advice

Was wondering what everyone’s favorite grain is to use. I’m planning on starting grains after I get some agar going and just wanted your guyses opinions. What’s your favorite grain and why? Maybe some pros and cons of each grain.

Wbs with fooman Tek http://www.shroomery.org/forums/showflat.php/Number/5265629/fpart/all/vc/1
Easy as fuck, quick, works well.
I fill my pressure cooker a little more than the height of a quart jar lid standing up, bring to boil, throw in my jars of wbs, take off burner, replace pressure cooker lid, let sit an hour, pour in strainer and rinse, load jars, pressure cook.
Easy as fuck. Entire process with a 2 hour pressure cook takes me 3-4 hours with a lot of downtime sitting around
I also use wild Finch seed from nature's song and not wbs. Expensive but it's super clean and way easier to use, higher nute contents, not sure how much difference it makes.

From what I gather it seems whole oats are relatively easy and cheap, BOD's Easy AF Oat prep TEK is is a great starting place in my opinion.

I've tried most (except millet, which i really want to try for grain masters but its super expensive for me) - i always go back to rye as i get really good stuff and can prep it with my eyes closed.

Thanks for the suggestions guys. I’ll probably start with wbs or oats. Will be looking around my area for what’s cheapest and make my decision after looking at the prep teks. Will be making jars for when the time comes. Also going to start agar on Monday and get some more brf cakes going for the heck of it.

Depends on a few different factors from person to person. Such as:
-Availability -Price -Quality -Preparation Time/Ease
What works for others, may or may not work well for you.

You plan to do agar before grain or syringe to grain first?
I personally had a horrible ke experience sttemtoting syringe to wbs myself.

That is basically luck of the draw. Pasty went agar because his syringes were shit too. For me, I was doing MS > grains for like 2 years before trying out agar. Now I do it like all the time.
If agar is too intimidating, nothing wrong with gambling, but really, if you can get the supplies (agar and light malt extract), it's easy as balls to make.

Yeah, I already have all the supplies to make Pasty plates. I’ve made some in the past just never used them. Going to stay motivated this time though, seeing how much better grains are has got me wanting to go the agar route. I might also just try a couple jars with a syringe and see if I can get a master jar going.

I have great luck with MS to grain as long as I use a print from a trusted person and make the syringe myself or order from the one vendor I actually trust. It's how I've always started if I don't have any culture. I knock up a grain jar and a couple petris at the same time.

Cool! I think I may give that a go then. Got some syringes that did well on brf cakes so it’s worth a shot. Will still be knocking up some pasty plates too.

I get wide mouth myself but don't think it matters much with grains since you can break it up to pour it out unlike cakes

Cool I’ll get the wide mouth then. It’s the only one left lol. Think other people are growing mushrooms too. There’s a good supply of regular quarts. The only wide mouth one has been opened, but I’ll clean them anyway.

I remember first time I ever got some quart jars I'm in the store with my friend and I'm looking around and this lady was going to help out and give us advice I guess and she asks "What are you using he jars for?"
I'm like... uh..... canning food I suppose...?

Hahah right? Not like they need to know
I ended up getting regular mouth because the wide mouth ones looked like they had some minor cracks. Going to start up some plates tomorrow and run some brf cakes tonight so I can inoculate tomorrow.

Regular mouth jars have an edge over wide mouth jars due to opening being somewhat smaller. Smaller openings are less of a path way for invader spores to enter inside of.

I've used both regular and wide mouth for g2g and both worked just fine for me.
I have noticed that the newest shipments of ball jars, at least where i am, are a new design. They're almost completely bare. Just a small ball logo. But they have all sorts of visible defects that scare me. Apparently their new equipment needs to be dialed in

Yeah Apples, I got the Kerr jars that don’t have mutch on them. Hopefully they last a good long while. Some of my halfpints cracked in the pc last run so I picked up another pack for PF Tek and I’ll probably use them for agar sometime down the road.

They're all actually made by the same company now. Ball used to be the best because they had mrasurements. Now they don't, and their glass molds are all fucked up. They need to shape up because that's what's almost always selling at stores here

Mine look fine. They have measurements. Idk what you're talking about. Maybe a bad batch? I bought mine a few months ago.
As for regular vs wide mouth, technically Ham is right but I've never had a problem with wide mouths. G2Ging a regular mouth qt into a wide mouth qt almost feels like cheating it's so easy lol.

I'm talking about the new ball jars. The boxes even said it was a new design. No measurement marks. Just one small ball logo near the bottom on one side and a bunch of defects. From two different stores in two different towns. I don't have any of the empties or a decent camera at the moment so this picture doesn't really show it, but i'm not trippin

Eat some of those PE and I’m sure you’ll be tripping lol. I see what you mean though, those do look new. Hope they fix the defects. Maybe if you call them they will give you a free box. I did that when I bought the wrong desiccant packs and they let me keep the other ones and sent me a bag for free.
I might have to get some widemouths for g2g lol, sounds easy.

It's that last jar that gets you in the sab's that are only around as tall as your average 55-70 qt tub. You just can't tip the donor jar any further so you have to either tip the receiving jar and/or try to shake, launch and catch the spawn grains. Shit's just no bueno at all
