Trich strikes again. Bad grain prep?
    #25153068 - 04/20/18 10:33 AM (6 years, 8 months ago)

Devastation.

I thought I was in the clear with my last grow producing two full flushes without incident. But now that it's warmer out and the pollen is everywhere I'm going green again.

I'm trying to figure out why my spawn keeps going bacterial.

Here we see the telltale wet grain against the glass appearance. My cultures are fine, even my bare handed work comes up without a trace of contams. However, my grains don't shake freely without there being a few clumps.

It's down to my inoculation technique or my prep. I've been blending my cultures using an oster blender blade on a regular mouth jar. I sealed the rubber gasket to the blades so it doesn't flop around when I lift it off to drop my culture in. I take care not to wave anything that hasn't been sterilized over any open media.

i kept having oats going bacterial on me like fucking crazy. wedge, LC, whatever the method, piss poor grains.
my spawn looked identical to yours after a shake. the ONLY thing i could find out was any oat not PCed 3hrs+
went to shit. i have the exact same cultures going in more LC about to dumped into classic wbs. i wonder what will happen..

im not trying to say its the oats but if its anything like my oats? then its definitely the oats:facepalm:

I went ahead and got another bag of oats because my very last round went much better. I only took my water to 185f and let set 30 min. The grains came out of the PC looking better than I ever had. I also PC no less than 2.5 hours. My bag of wheat, man that shit is SEXY, so nice to work with, I NEED MORE!!!

My oats are good with 2hrs, I just started eoth slightly bacterial MS and started running before I tied my shoelaces with a nice clean agar culture. That said I have had no problems getting fruits from my shoeboxes or now my mono. In the mean time I went to the plates and have nocced up a wide assortment of wbs and oats from agar for better results. As far as me oats go, they are washed i do believe. Some nice horse feed. I do PC my big bags 3hr, but jars I do 2hrs. My only trich jars were from either dirty ass LC, or poor technique in the SAB.

I've had wedge jars come up looking suspicious too. They're Triple Crown Naturals whole oats. I can't seem to prep them without some burst grains and clumpiness no matter how hard I try. I pressure cook them at 18psi for 2.5hrs but they still come up dirty.

More and more I am thinking the source of my oats my be the issue. So much random crap in them. I may have better luck with oats from a new source.

I realize there are a few grains uncolonized, but how are these?

Mine has sticks and rocks in it. Haven't had a problem with 90m oats but usually do 120-150 anyway. Most people do not dry them enough before sterilization.

Is the hypothesis bacteria leads to a weakening leads to mold?

I dry mine plenty before loading em up. I spread them out really thin after boiling and wait til they're bone dry on the surface. I guess I'll be less aggressive on the boil and PC them EVEN LONGER before giving up.

Are you in the Bible belt mushboy?

I'm in NC and I can't leave a glass of lemon water out or it'll have 3 different molds growing in it in no time at all. Winter was OK but it's warming up again.

If this big tub makes it past the first flush I won't even know what to blame. Nothing wrong with it beyond some coir that dried out on the surface during colonization cuz my asshole cat ripped duct tape off of one of my holes.

Is there a brand of WBS you prefer? I've looked around locally and had no luck finding anything without sunflower seeds.

I used to have HUGE trich problems guys. I still am unsure of the oats, but I get results from them. Here is what I did.

I backed down my oat heat, so not to bust any, as well as not soaking to long. I then dump hot and steam dry 1+hours. Being slightly under plump they are able to soak up a bit of moisture, or at least my theory. I am damn close to hydrated, but held back, so maybe 90%. This is important when inoculating with LI/LC so that the water can be absorbed. Bacteria thrive with extra moisture, so I focus on moisture control. I now also add verm, by hand, until my sub mix is perfect. I make DAMN SURE I do not go over field capacity. I would rather throw a couple heavy-ish mist on it around day 2 or 3. This has made a huge difference for me. IMO/IME thrich thrives better than cubes do in an over saturated environment, where as the cubes do better in a slightly dryer environment.

I hate giving them my $ as well. Unfortunately they have grown so big, that some times they are a necessary evil, specially with this hobby it seems.
