Help with plant ID
    #25140139 - 04/15/18 03:24 AM (5 years, 9 months ago)

Was walking along a flood plain the other day and noticed an older couple gathering handfuls of this plant.  At first I thought they were gathering nettle, since that's something I do and they also had gloves on, but after approaching I noticed the gloves were only for protecting against the nettle as they gathered this other plant.  I stopped and chatted a bit and asked what this plant was called, but the gentleman said he didn't know what the english word was for it.  I'm really interested in what this is and if it really is a decent edible.

What I can tell you about it is that it grows along flood plains and eventually gets to be 3-5ft tall by the end of spring.  I know that's not much info, but I didn't really pay much attention to it last yr since I only pick nettle and then was looking past/thru it to locate P. ovoideocystidiata.  Here is the couple of pics I took of it.

This thread was moved from The Great Outdoors.

Reason:
Better of making plant ID requests in the EG.

Cool, thanks for moving this to a better suited forum.  Maybe there'll be someone who knows what this is.

Looks like mugwort.

There's also a plant called hogweed that resembles the photo, which irritates and blisters skin, and could've been another reason why they were wearing gloves.

Thanks so much for your responses!  I see there's a bunch of plants going by the name "mugwort".  I'll keep an eye on this plant and see what the flowers look like.  Totally forgot that flowers are a crucial part of plant id.  This year it'll only be taking pics and will refrain from trying it as an edible. Thanks again and I'll update in 3-4 weeks when these things start flowering up.

Common Mugwort would be my best guess- Artemisia Vulgaris
