Chaga on dead birch?
    #25150324 - 04/19/18 09:30 AM (6 years, 8 months ago)

Hi yall, is there anybody who has tried growing chaga on dead birch logs? I know it takes a few years to grow in the wild on living trees. I know the living tree produces betulinic acid which adds to the health benefits. Obviously the tree aint living anymore so i doubt itll still produce the same health benefits. And supposedly it is symbiotic with the living tree. I currently have chaga growing in grain jars, and have a 30yr old birch that just got cut down. I kind of want to go out and inoculate it to see if it works. Just curious to see if anybody else has tried this. Or is this a shroom that is like the truffle and morel and hard to replicate. Tia

Chaga is a parasite.  The big warty part you see is just mycelium. The fruitbody develops just prior to the trees death to produce spores. Though nothing is impossible, it would be very dificult to simulate the sap flow through living wood(a large tree can absorb and transpire hundreds of gallons per day). If it grew on dead wood it would be way easier to cultivate. When the tree finally dies so does the chaga.

Properly harvesting the "warts" can greatly extend the life of the tree. The chaga will still win and the tree will still die but you can delay this by 10-20+ years. The older the warts the more potent they are. Harvesting in the winter is best for polysaccharide content due to the tree mass producing sugars as a natural antifreeze.

IF YOU PUNCTURE A BIRCH TREE'S BARK IT WILL DIE!

please be respectful and cultivate nature wisely.

Parasites require a live host, I'd say try inoculate some plugs and select a branch to drill not the base of tree trunk and seal it back with beeswax worst case the branch dies, second option is spray lc on bark of living trees and hope for the best
