Wanna learn to drive a stick shift?

I recently learned how and there were two things that really helped me.
Step 1: Play a racing arcade game.
The racing arcade method really works. Im talking the full seat set up simulator u see at arcades. I used to play those all the time, always selecting the manual transmission option. The set up is so similar to an actual car, that its basically a simulator. Play this type of racing car arcade as much as possible.
Step 2: Learn to drive a forklift.
The inching pedal on some forklifts is a lot like a clutch on a car. Very similar. If u get good at the inching pedal, u will likely take on manual stick shift driving easily. If u cant find a forklift, just stick to the racing car arcade.
And thats it. I drove a little stick shift when i was a teen but other than that, i did not have experience driving one. Then recently i had the chance to drive one and it was super easy to take on with the two steps listed above.

Giving people a basic understanding of the mechanics involved has helped me teach a few how to drive manuals.

Nice!

Yes explaining the mechanical workings does help however some people are not mechanically inclined to understand how it all works.
But its worth a try.

Knowing the mechanics definately helps, my first expirence was at a young age when a family member let me try to drive their truck. I think I tried for a solid hour to back up out of a parking spot but simply couldnt for the life of me get the concept of "slowly" releasing the clutch till you felt it catch. Of course bearly being able to touch the pedals didnt help much either. It wasnt till years later when I learned to ride a motorcycle that it finally clicked and I was able to drive my buddys car, still stalled out a few times but I was grinning ear to ear. All about that clutch control

When I was young I talked my friend into taking a jump on his bike and he fell and broke his right arm. His truck was stick so he asked me to drive. I kept on killing it and he had to drive home shifting with his left arm.
The next time I tried driving stick I picked it up right away. No one explained it to me. I just did for some reason. It really isn't hard. Just give it gas and let out the clutch slowly.
I just sold my racing seat and steering wheel with clutch because I didn't play it anymore. I had lots of fun with that thing. I paid like $700 for it. It's worth it if you are into racing. Some of the new games are so realistic. Like Gran Turismo for Playstation. They had an online competition about 9 years ago. Whoever got the fastest lap on a track maybe it was Fuji would get a chance to be a race car driver. I placed 4th. It was with a Nissan 350z. So close.

the simplest way to learn is to buy a 100$ or so manual beater and drive. If you get good you can always enter a amateur race, and have some FUN.
Dont ride the clutch and/or coast when inappropriate

I remember buying the Car I have now, my dad co-signed my loan. Saw the car one day driving my 92 prelude and by that afternoon I had it. My dad drove it half way home, he wanted to drive it of course even though he was a Ducati guy. Pulled over side of road said alright lets switch and I said good now teach me to drive a stick LOL.

Just wondering why auto's are so popular in America?
In the UK, 99.9% of people drive a manual and do so from the age of 17 when they learn to drive.

Fair enough
You can still eat when driving a manual, you just have to be willing to take breaks between bites to change gear.

In the UK, 99.9% of people drive a manual and do so from the age of 17 when they learn to drive.
1. Traffic. Gridlock rush hour traffic in LA / NYC / DC / Pick your poison.. and your clutch leg turns to putty after an hour or two of constant stop and go. Worse if driving uphill or have a really stiff clutch.
2. Modern Automatics are more efficient/faster/stronger than the manual variants in many cases. It used to be that manuals were the superior transmission for gas mileage, fastest 1/4 mile times, etc. Not anymore necessarily. Autos win on most counts.. they have come a long way in the past 10 years. Back in the day, automatics - cost more, were more sluggish, had poorer performance, etc when compared to the manuals. Most of those things are no longer true. Dual clutch transmissions removed manuals from the top of the sports car category. Of course some top end cars still come in manual only.
3: Americans drive more than Europeans and America is MUCH more spread out.
That would explain the vast majority of it in a nutshell imo. Of course even if auto is better some people will still prefer manual As there isn't any replacement for rowing the gears, that tactile feeling makes you more "engaged" with driving.
Basically, the only reason to buy stick shift now is because you enjoy it. And there is absolutely nothing wrong with that.
But yeah, stick drivers are becoming sort of an endangered species in the US.... Hardly anyone knows how to drive stick anymore. joke now is a manual car is the number one deterrent to car theft in the US There's been multiple cases of people trying to carjack someone, and then grinding gears and stalling before freaking out and bailing

Those points make a lot of sense. Especially the one about America being much more spread out. It's funny how a lot of Americans Wouldn't think much of taking a four hour drive for a day out. A four hour drive here would take you almost half way across the UK.
I have spent some time driving auto's in America and Dubai, as both are left hand drive I have found that for the first day of driving I continuously slam my left hand into the door as I Subconsciously reach out to change gear

Great explaination Shroomism. With long distance driving i can see how shifting gears would get tiring.
That manual-drive car jacking fail would be a fuckin riot to see! Theres gotta be a youtube video on it.

Forklifts are dangerous. Have u driven a stick beford? If so, its pretty similar, at least for some models. Always drive slow around corners and use the horn a lot!
Thats awesome Shroomism
