Okay, thanks. I found a different container that's probably better (smaller area, deeper sides). Would a 1:1 ratio of PF cake to coir work, or should I up it to 1:2? I've seen people using both.

EDIT: I also have a big SGFC, but that seems like it's overkill for 2 babycakes.

people use both because both are fine. 1:1 will colonize faster but have less water to offer the flush and 1:2 will colonize a bit slower but have more water to offer.

i'd use whatever gives you the best sub dimensions as long as it's between 1:1 and 1:3

Since cakes already have vermiculite in them, I would go a 1:1 ratio. 1:2 is better for grains, IMO.

Okay, so the current plan is to birth and grate 2 cakes (after removing a pin from one to agar) to 2 cups of coir in a Tupperware container, like a mini shoebox, and then either bagging it or dubbing it for fruiting. Does this sound like a reasonable plan of action?

i assume you know but didn't mention, you should bring the coir to field capacity with hot water first.

Personally I have never grated a cake, I always crumbled it with really clean hands, or gloves on.

I boiled water and added coir chunks to it, then stirred it up real good and let it steam until it was at FC.

How are y'all avoiding condensation in agar Petri's? I'm using an infrared thermometer to measure the temperature of my borosilicate reagent bottle temp and pouring when it gets to about 48c but the plates instantly fog up.

Do y'all literally pour a whole sleeve of dishes and wrap the unused ones for later use? How do y'all manage a sleeve of Petri's in a small sab?

I have a flow hood, so after pouring I let them set for a while, in front of it and it helps get rid of it. I put extras in a NEW zip lock bag, un wrapped and they are fine for me. The other option, is pour it out of the plate by tipping it on it's side. The petri should have enough gap for it to run out, at least my disposable ones do.

nope but it'll return to it's normal color after the myc has been eating it for  a while.

Yeah, myc will eat the color in time. I honestly don't know why. I just know it does.

If you lose the food coloring in the pc, I'm at a complete loss as to why. Unless you have too much water n the pc and it is drawing the agar out of the jar in melding with the pc water?

As to cakes and grating...when I first started, I tried grating, and said screw it and crumbled cakes. Crumbling worked great. Give it s hot either way. Breaking the myc up and giving it lots of noc points is what is needed.

I've used natural food Coloring before and it just ends up brown.  I only do prepours though, so it could be the PC cycle.  I don't even add food coloring any more.

No matter how many you pour, do so in a stack and let cool.  The lower plates will be clear.  Once set, you can also shuffle the cloudy plates to the bottom of the stack to help clear.  Eventually, they should all clear up but the easiest way to deal with it is to ignore it.  As mentioned, unused plates can be placed unwrapped in ziplock bags and will last some time.

I find the gap between top and bottom plate, even pinched between fingers, is enough the let it run out when you tip it on its rim, if there is a large amount of condensation. If it doesn't pool then it is not enough to worry about. This at least works with my brand of plates, maybe higher end ones fit tighter and this wont work. Since getting a digital thermometer, with a 4 foot cable to the probe, agar has gotten better. I can start pouring at lower temps to avoid condensation, or I can say fuck it and pour hot and let set in front of my flow hood, and it kills most of the condensation. IF you don't have a flow hood, I suggest getting a good digital thermometer. Track the temp of your water bath and pour as low as possible, without it setting. For me starting at 130f I don't get solidification at the end, but get little condensation.
