Need some help!!
    #25149351 - 04/18/18 08:28 PM (6 years, 8 months ago)

Hey everyone, hope you all are well.

I've got a whole shit load of PF jars colonized, and most are beggining to pin.  I didn't properly prepare for my extravagant venture, and so I have a tiny SGFC that only fits six cakes.  I've been BRF to BRF some of the cakes, but my terrarium is full and I can't cook enough BRF to spawn all my jars to.

I'm trying to find a good tek on just fruiting in the jar.  On one of my jars, I just opened it about fifteen minutes ago, and its got a bunch of shrooms going crazy in there, with one really big one.  I just opened the lid, filled up a spare syringe with some water, and squirted some water on the dry verm layer, where alot of them were growing from, and then put a little zippered baggie over it.  Did I do the right thing?

Any and all help is appreciated!

I like to remove the dry verm since it's basically a filter, but you set it up right.

If I had removed the dry verm, I'd have removed all the mushies growing through it.  Is it fine to just squirt water around on the myc where the mushrooms are growing from?  It turned a little dark with the water, but now its all gone and its completely back and even looking better.

Use a hand sprayer to moisten the verm till it darkens, instead of a syringe.
What you did is called top-fruiting, and everything you did looks okish, except for a couple things.

Next time you wanna top fruit, don't wait till there are pins. Open the jar, remove the dry verm layer, submerge the cake in water (in the jar) for some hours, drain, cover the surface with a thin layer of verm right out of the bag and get it moist with the sprayer. Cover it with the baggie and close the zip around the edges so it fits more or less tight around the jar. You can keep the cake like that in a shoebox with no holes if you see things drying out faster than you'd like. Mist as needed and if you get a nice pinset you can even bottom water the cake to help it along.

Is it okay to use the other jars that are pinning inside to spawn to bulk?  Just pick the mushrooms that are on it and then crumble to bulk?

These have just started pinning and growing within the last few days.

Thanks again everyone.

I'm sorry, im not actually crumbling to bulk.  I'm crumbling to more brf.  I would think that would make a difference, since if its already pinning and spawned to bulk, it might be a little weaker.  But I would think if its to more brf, it would be fine, its just more fuel for the mycelium, right?

Thanks double!

Don't crumble to brf. Theres no way to do it sterile. Wet grains grow mold unless they are already fully colonized.

Also you can spawn pins to bulk just fine. No problem there.

Thank you for your time and help Tiger, its been awhile since I heard anything from you.  It's good to hear that pinning cakes can be spawned to bulk!

I had forgotten eat had written that.

Though it's certainly possible to pull off I really don't recommend this. Eat is an experienced grower with smooth hands and a lot of experience working outside of what's usually considered 'safest practices'

Though you're probably going to go through with it so my advice is to be as smooth as you can in your actions when making the transfers and when you have the bag open. Sudden jerking movements will cause more unpredictable air currents and you generally want your motions to be deliberate and without sudden halts.

You can definitely fruit a jar with a bag turned over it. Bod's cheapest way to get started shows this off.

I personally use the following when my chamber is out of space...

- bag from a loaf of bread (the walmart kind is perfect) a chunk of polyfill a piece of aluminum foil, some verm and one of my wife's hair ties (she has billions)
basically i just boil the bag, fill bag with about 2inches of verm at field capacity, put aluminium foil on top of verm, put cake on top of aluminium foil, close the top of the bag with the tiewrap, leave a chunk of polyfill sticking out of the bag, half of the chunk of poly inside the bag (this is your air filter) and VOILA!!!!! you have a home made fruiting bag.

--------------------
-Why cant i grow mushies?
-Because you refused to buy a $14.99 pressure cooker from Walmart.
-But can't I just boil everything.
NO! NO! NO! NO!...pressure cook it or GTFO!!!
-But why?
-Because mycology's biggest secrets are hidden inside a 15psi sterile chamber. THAT'S WHY!!!

That is... quite elaborate.
