Macgyver-esque Lab supplies/Inventory Innovation Ideas? (Not everyday stuff you'd remember)
#25148366 - 04/18/18 02:56 PM (6 years, 8 months ago) |

I'm working on completing a budget mycology lab and for the first time I've actually ran out of things to order/source for this hobby.
I was hoping people could shed a light on some cool shit I could buy and re-purpose, or maybe things used by Shroomerites as improvisations/innovations.
"Macgyver Mycology" if you will
For example, I saw something like people using liquor pour caps mounted into mason jar lids for agar pouring (I opted for a 500ml pyrex media container w/ gl 45 cap), custom LC/LI setups, fruiting chamber ideas - I'm open to anything that'll make my time spent in this hobby even more fun, and even easier than it already is.
Always lookin' to innovate. Some people find some really cool uses for some really random shit...

Your lab assistant looks pissed about something.

Since you and mushboy appear to be acquainted, maybe you could ask him to stop posting in my threads when he knows he's on ignore because he intentionally singles in on my threads and tries to derail them. Ordinarily I don't have that much of an issue with any one person.
No kidding I have him on ignore, he's a no-life troll with a bad attitude. Why would I want to hear anything from him; it's just shit he learned from you, I've already read all your TEKs. I don't need him reiterating your stuff 24/7. He's essentially off topic in every thread, stays on point just enough not to get in trouble for trolling. But his first post is always "OP has me on ignore, just noticed" ; seeing a pattern here?
What is a budget mycology lab: seriously? that was your excuse of a post for attention this time?

I was growing shrooms a decade before bod homie.
And yes. What's a budget mycology lab? Because damn near everyone here uses a budget myco lab because we all work from home. Mine cost 8bucks for a tote. And 20 for a torch. I grow pounds of shrooms with that 'lab' ...cat was a stray so she was free.
So please explain... What's in your budget mycology lab? Your op states you want things to be simpler and easier. First step? You don't need a lab.
You whole rant is off topic in your own thread. Send me a pm if you wanna go at it, or go to i hate mushboy and call me a pos. I'll join ya. ...or disappear after a few months.. like the others on my ignore list(mm/random noobs)

You have no one on your ignore list. I said I wanted to make things more fun & easier in my OP.
I'm a dog person. I don't want to PM with you, I want you to GET LOST and to stay out of my threads where you come in, and make a harmless thing another eyesore.

Enjoy your free cat. Now please, if you would let people get back to real talks that don't involve your ghetto ass living room and stray cats.

Thanks for your lack of a contribution to this thread. You growing longer than Bod was not why I asked Bod to speak to you, mods generally deal with the trolls, especially the ones they know, and have more or less witnessed them going about the behavior you have been, continuously now. Bod is the mod, the TC. IDC if you are friends or not, it shouldn't matter if Bod dislikes me personally himself for my views, you are blatantly trolling my threads and causing drama and I request it be stopped. I'm tired of your bullshit, get a life.

Ok. The Cat thing was slightly trolling but it's a reasonable question for a public forum.
What is a budget mycology lab? 3rd time asking...
Considering not all of us are on the same myco path, I was genuinely curious has to what you define as a 'lab'.
That's not trolling. It's asking a question that got a melt reply now twice because you don't like me. Boo boo.

Perhaps you would get more helpful advice if the threat of being put of your ignore list wasn't mentioned so often? I could constructively add to this thread but I won't do it.

I don't know but there's something beatiful about growing quality tubs by making use of as little fancy equipment and materials as possible, it's even far more rewarding in my opinion. I've been really hard pressed to source equipment and materials where I am, even the grains I can get locally are shit quality, but that forced me to find easy and cheap ways to get around those shortcomings and problems, which is a good thing.
For the average home grower a SAB will do the job just as good as a FH, for instance. Polyfil is cheap and an excellent filter. GH's are really not needed for cubes. You can effectively convert a PC into a sterilizer without any mods. You can clean really dirty cultures fast without the use of antibiotics the list goes on and on...
Go cheap and easy when you can go cheap and easy and use your creativity and energy to go around the problems you encounter along the way without having to resort to costly solutions.

The only things most people's "labs" are lacking is a good torch and a flowhood/bag sealer if you wana go big. Everything else that is lacking in a diy home lab is skill

I bought a 12" 5mm seal magnetic-hold impulse sealer and it is the best thing I have ever purchased for this hobby. It was pricey though, like over $200 if I remember. It is sweet, makes sealing bags a total snap and the seals always come out perfect. Highly recommend 10/10

Plurfect you aren't entitled to privacy or lack of scrutiny in a public forum.
MB posts in all the interesting threads potd, general, off topic, and tons of simple question threads helping noobs for years. To actually think he specifically targets your threads is laughable dude. Maybe its a millenial thing lacking the ability to deal with adversity
My thoughts on fancy gadgets is .... i see far more people struggling with marthas and LCโs ,than i do with simple effective methods like a sab, a regular mono, a2g, & g2g. The more people stray from proven successful methods before they are proffient in basic methods seems to spell failure more often than not. Not only has that been my observation but my first hand experience.

Looking for innovations and alternative uses - not fancy gadgets? There really are not many fancy gadgets required for this hobby, after a flowhood, magnet stirrer, quality impulse sealer, etc.
JHOVA - I'm far from a millenial. If he isn't singling out my threads, then the dude literally has zero life because his timing is top notch at any time of day, and I can easily move passed this without my concern of what happens to public forums, just tired of the constant attempts at derail.
This thread isn't about fancy or expensive gadgets.
edit_
(If this was about being rich, I wouldn't have a flowhood still on my list, lol)
I'm holding back on buying a lot of shit simply because i don't "need" it to produce the same results, but the main thing holding me back there is/was a flowhood - working on the specs for a build again, not excited to pay for the blower and HEPA but should be a fun project and I know I won't miss my SAB.
I'm thinking more innovative like, everyday items or random items re-purposed or custom made for this hobby; preferably ones that are not expensive.
Don't need an impulse sealer when you've got zip ties; I almost jumped on one of those off ebay for like 80$ but then fell in love with heavy duty zip ties both for spawn and for pasteurizing compost.
Magnetic stirrer/plate must be nice; probably another thing I'll opt to just build as a side project and definitely don't need.
Sitting here trying to think of a way to explain the desire: I want something cool and out of the ordinary. LOL. I'm about to start building shit.

back to the first question.... WHAT DO YOU CONSIDER A LAB?!
i bet you only a few share your definition. hence the slow thread/lack of on topic discussion. to most of us our 'lab' is our home. its where we live. my lab is in my mancave. or my kitchen. i have no 'dedicated room'
people who post pics of stainless steal work benches with 3 AAs and FH ..ect are rare. not too many have that.
end transmission.
EDIT!: to be fair ive only been posting actively since 11/16 and only half of that time is advice mixed with germlins.
and make this easier by taking me off ignore. i wont bite... talk to me goose.

I have 4 working AA's, a flowhood, and a dedicated room. It's nothing fancy though. Some stainless steel work benches, and a 55 gallon pressure sterilzer, or larger would be nice though.

So I had a setup once that had a space heater plugged into a thermostat which would shut off the power to the heater when it reached the set temperature. It helps ensure ideal temps.

I mean if you look at a professional grower's "lab"...like seriously go watch some of What the Fungus's videos...his lab space looks like a lot of what you will see here. Small room with some flowhoods. Nothing crazy at all. A culture refrigerator. Now to me, fruiting rooms is where shit get's interesting and crazy.

I feel you on the work benches, mine is made from 2x4's, plywood and some linoleum (I found it that way) and a separate smaller table for SAB work. It does its job but I long for the feel of quality while I work.

I'll give it a look. Fruiting rooms don't even enter the equation for me as all I use are monotubs now, but I'll admit I've thought of converting a martha or grow tent for trays and stuff.
I should have had a better title for this thread but honestly cannot think of a good way to describe what I am looking for besides improvised items.
Like liquor pour cap mounted into mason jars for agar pour work.
I just RTV'ed an Oster blade to a mason jar lid ring for LI work, for example. I had to do it twice...wide mouthed jars no bueno on current blender, lol - glad I checked before it dried to the wide-mouth lid. Funny how the search engine will save your ass years later in an otherwise irrelevant buried post, someone advised to check.
I'm considering going and buying a glass drill bit and trying my hand at modifying mason jars for LC/LI purposes, like verum has - definitely meets the "cool" aspect of what I'm looking for.
Things of that nature I guess, wish I had better examples, but if I did, I wouldn't have a question. :P

With Cubensis an automated fruiting room isn't even necassary, because Cubensis can fruited in abundance within monotub fruiting chambers, so all that would be needed is a separate dedicated room to fruit tubs inside of. I will say this though, in order to fill a room full of tubs, viably, said tubs will need to be modified with holes, and stuffed with polyfil.

I've been put on ignore as far as I can tell just for quoting one of MB's posts but for everyone else...
The stir/heat plate is one of my most used tools. It isn't really needed but makes mixing up media simple. I also have a stir plate made from a computer fan just to stir things that don't need heated or that need stirred constantly.
An impulse sealer is nice to have. I have used it to make little pouches of liquid media (for plant tissue culture) and keep thinking about using those pouches to grow LC cultures. I think they could be stabbed with a needle and the colonized liquid sucked out with little chance of contamination since they wouldn't be exposed to the air.
Take me off ignore and I'll forgive you and share my method of sterilizing the liquid in little, sealed pouches made from cheap ziplock freezer bag plastic. My middle name is MacGuyver.

Yer givin' me a chubby
Nice stuff Josex. +1 to you for having the common sense of what a budget lab is, rofl.

Macgyver stuff - yea that's a much better way of putting it!
I agree a fruiting room isn't likely to be in my future as everything will fruit out of tubs, or in bottles or bags inside tubs. Shoeboxes don't even need the holes, just a loose lid. Would be cool though :P
I have been considering building a humidifier w/ ultrasonic atomizer's off ebay/zon' - my 65$ unit shit the bed from hard water deposit with no save from vinegar the 10th time around, and I noticed how much cheaper it would be to build one, or how cool it would look to put one in a reptile tank or something. The current rH of my work area is fine with it being spring, but during the winter it has been a problem consistently, and I just don't like waking up all congested either.
I love me some macgyver mycology.
RTV silicone drying on that regular mouth lid; can't wait to make some LI with that baby. Tried blenderless inoculant and no matter how much I shook that fucker it just was not going to break down the way I wanted, lmao.

Try throwing a blender ball in the jar before sterilization or something to break up the agar, it will desintegrate the puck completely, or just do LC's.
Also, big tubs don't really need holes, that's just nother dogma so firmly established in peoples heads that they don't even consider trying unmodified. I've actually had better results with unmodified (ambient light from a window) than with holes.
Also, tubs create their own microclimate, independent of what's going on outside, so building a GH sounds like a good waste of time and money if you're mostly gonna be growing cubes. Imo you're focusing your thoughts on things that have no relevance, on materials things that aren't really needed. You'd be better off focusing on ways to perfect every aspect of cultivation and adapting them to your own circumstances and style.

Won't be necessary now, though I'd considered that if I had attempted more blenderless, now I have a blender setup for LI (when it is done drying tomorrow anyways, I'll probably do my best LI tomorrow night if not Tuesday - I have WBS made up for it already and a puck ready).
I will say, because I am using your TEK/s and it caused some clutter in your thread which I'm sorry about - I've been on the hunt for the best inoculant. That's why I invested in premium LC mix, the blender blade, etc - I am going to try all the most popular tried and true methods and run them side by side from isolate/clone and see which works best. Whichever works best will be how I do things from thereon.
I have a deep love for LC's and it is currently growing after some josex-style biopsy inoculations to new media - looking pretty! I haven't given up on LC yet, but I have to compare the two to know how they behave differently.
I really like how the LC's begin to form from the tiny bit of agar; starts in a little flat ended spherical colony in the debris; different from what I am used too, only downside is less visibility but who gives a shit when you use proper sterile technique, that stage doesn't last long anyway
