Confused rookie. Is this contaminated?

Got white cob web going over half my cake, but recently 1 corner has turned black.
What is this? What caused it? Is the cake still good?
Any help would be appreciated :/

I don't think there's any coming back from that.

Any idea what would have caused it?

You have a contaminant mold. It is white as it grows then it starts to make dark spores. Be careful not to let any air current move those spores (probably happened already) or they will end up contaminating the whole room and all projects instead of only one cake. Put the cake in a bag and trow in the incinerator. If it is cobweb and I'm not saying it is, spraying with hydrogen peroxide could save the cake (If you try this, do it outside). Spray your room with lysol to kill the spores that are probably circulating around.

Thanks for the help. I think I may just cut my loses with this one. Is there anything in particular that could have caused this? I would like to try avoiding this in the future.

Did you pasteurize your casing? Do you fan them? I think if there's not enough air transfer it helps this sort of thing. Also if you caught it earlier maybe you could have scraped it off and sprayed the area with bleach solution ,but this is of some debate.

I have found in my limited experience some things do contaminate easier than others . Put it to a learning experience and have another go. Keep reading.

"Did you pasteurize your casing?" tbh I don't know what that is. I don't fan them. This is only my second attempt at growing and because of that it's one of those easy grow kits. Instructions basically said to open it up, put it in the vented plastic bag, keep it in light and at a certain temperature and wait until you start to see pins. Done that and this is what I got.

IMO it's more fun to grow from scratch instead of a kit. I suggest growing some BRFCs (Brown Rice Flour Cakes) in half pint jars. Once they are fully colonized, cheese grater them to vermiculite. I did this with one jar that was contammed on one side. Cut out the contam part before I grated it and got quite a few fruits. A pretty basic, low risk way to get some fruits and start getting a feel for how this works.
