Picking Psilocybe cubensis in nature. Which ones are ready ?
    #25145633 - 04/17/18 01:08 PM (6 years, 8 months ago)

I've been picking Psilocybe cubensis outdoors.

Red something about once they flattened it is too late. But it was in a indoor cultivation thread.
Any suggestions about how to recognize the good ones to pick ? Is it has to do with size, cap shape or what else ? Also if they flattened mean there is no use to take them ?
I also read picking before the Vail breaks. But from the dozens I've seen only one had a full vale.

Thanks for the help to a newbie

You should pick only the fully open ones, ones that managed to release their spores and reproduce, all of the active alkaloids are still present. It is advised to pick cultivated ones before they fully open so they don't release their spores, because it looks kinda ugly, no other valid reason.

Thanks. I do make sure to leav some behind and also break the stamp and not pick from root (I heard that help maintain the spread)

What about size or cap angle is that how I can know better potency ?

Thanks.

Nope. Potency is what it is. It is said that the cells stop dividing and alkaloids stop synthesizing after the veil breaks, and all weight added after that is water weight, but once you dry them, they would have the same weight and same potency. Easiest rule to follow is pick them when you find them, don't worry about the cap angle or whatever.

Whichever ones you can see. Be respectful.  The older they are the more parasites they usually have. Dry them well and make a tea (boil). Have seen ones knee high and a medium pizza pan on top. Wouldnt recommend eating those though. Fascinating to see the microcommunities of life that are sponsored by the big ones.

Long story short: the small ones are cleaner, have less metabolic buildup (pee), less parasites, and are generally more potent.

The big ones can make all the spore load for the whole colony. Though you may take one before it sporulates, its genetic patterns are transferable to other members of the colony who have more of an advantage for sending out spores.

By letting them reach "maturity" before harvesting you are actually taking more energy from the colony than taking smaller immature fruits.

Also do not cut them with a blade. This opens up the cell walls and exposes sugars to other potential pathogens. This requires an immune response by the colony and takes energy away from fruitbody and spore production, thus reducing the life and well being of the colony. Plucking is ideal and although it may remove a bit of substrate, it does not break cell walls exposing their juices to the nasties. Breaking the tissues causes cells to seperate from eachother at their bond. This separation causes more branching and more potential fruits. Cut cells get all sorts of cottony and mono and nonfruity...
