Well it is a mutant from a mutant strain. PE counts as a mutant strain like KSSS.

Looks like PE? If so, those are the standard blob mutants you'll get on the first flush. I get them more than regular blobs now and I still haven't narrowed down the exact parameters to avoid them (going to try verum's advice above since he's a PE master).

PE is a somewhat stabilized mutation, I believe, and it's super finicky, so I guess not that stable?

Here's a few of my PE tubs showing the mix of regular blobs, blob mutants, and PE fruits:

the argument between casing preventing blobs and not preventing them is not new. some say consolidation, some say casing, some say conditions and some say it's just the culture.

i think my experience is leading me (heavily) toward a mix of casing and culture. i have ten bags of the same clone going now that were consolidated and cased and are still blobbing their balls off. but three of my best penis clones put out perfect first flushes with just a casing and no extra consolidation. I still have yet to find a culture that will not blob if left uncased.

Yep, casing was the first preventative method I read about and have always cased PE to arrive at blobs. I used a PE clone that has never blobbed on the previous owner and I got blobs, so I'm sure it's a plethora of factors. I'm going to play with PE again soon. I mentioned your method because I've never cared about PH, probably didn't measure the casing, or keep track of when I applied it, etc. It sounds like I should with your results.

verum, you ever try and isolate a PE strain on agar?

I was thinking of just running with this but I guess it would be best to get some feedback.
I just started mycology recently and have been putting in 6-8 hours of reading every night here for the last three weeks, gathering supplies ect ect.

In order Bi weekly, I have 8 peurto rican BRF 30% colonized.

I got petris going with a pea size hawaiian myc growth going in one and 4 stand byes with no sign of contam after a week. The blanks are chilling in the fridge now.

Last monday knocked up 8 Hawaiian BRF/gypsum  1/4 volume of the water cut with coffe water blend; knocked up and colonizing.

Also got one jar of white millet sterilizing atm for G2G transfers to test my grain prep.

Anyways, I'll stop with the story time and get to the point. Just loving this stuff.  :cookiemonster:

To start while I get my head wrapped around the whole process and get it beaten in,,

I dropped $30 on a (A) grow kit while I DIY for the future,

(2) 1# presteralized/hydrated bagged rye berries

5# of Hpoo coir verm mix.

1:2.5 ratio I'm assuming. (came with two grow bags)

Knocked up the grain bags with PES Hawaiian on 3/23

Colonize Temps 70-75 f

Massuaged the bags on Saturday at 60 and 70% and the myc is finishing the bags up like it owns em money so probably this weekend or next week they will be ready for the sub.

So the kit is a grow Bag kit and I'm honestly debating if I should just go with a tray in a mono on these instead of a bag. My gut is telling me, go mono.

Question is which Tray should I use and which mono tub size for the tray.
Side question, should I have perlite under the tray in the mono? (tray on top of the perlite)

I set the (2) 1# bags in each tray for visual aid, both trays are 4.5 high and the same length, the white one (tray 2) is wider by 2 inches.

The white one has 2 inches space on the width, the clear fits just right.

Tray 1

Tray 2

Tubs, Top is a 25Q (no holes yet), Middle is a 32Q (no holes yet) Bottom is a 64Q SGFC (Drilled and ready to go)  The two dots on the top is the 3 and 4 inch marks for sub.

Was gonna do one as a grow bag and one small tray/mono but I fear the trays wont make a 3-4 inch sub with just 1# grain and 2.5# for a 3-4 inch sub level.

Just did a quick test,,,Clear one holds 5Q of water to the top and the white one 7Q at the 4 inch mark so I'm guessing the white is the candidate.

5# sub + 2# spawn = 7Q at 4 inch depth.

TLDR: Guess the main question with the info I gave you is,,, what would you do? (recommend) :oogle:

Well, I'm sorry, but this is going to be quick.

I would put the 2 1 pound colonized bags to coir in the white tub and place it in the smallest tote that the tub will fit in. Don't worry about air exchange to start. Let the myc colonize the tub fully. Then, when it's fully colonized, go ahead and either flip the lid or get your holes in there and put in loose polyfil.

When I've grown tubs in tubs because of just having an odd jar or two, or just to check a variety out, I found that I needed to monitor the surface conditions a little more than with fully filled monos. The good thing is that you will learn how to manage the substrate doing this.

Hope that helps a little! You're looking good there.

:whathesaid:

Also when doing a tub inside of a tub, you can put water in the mono tub, to help keep humidity up, IF you have problems with surface conditions.

:takingnotes: Thanks guys. I would assume if it came down to the water layer it would be wise to change it out every 24 hours?

The water I speak of would ONLY be in the big outside tub, and the colonized tray would sit in there. I usually only put enough to last 24 hours, then it all evaped out or almost gone.

:whatshesaid:

Was going to post a picture of the white tub in the mono tub in response to Yesum and it wouldn't fit in the 25Qrt tub.
I just poured 7Qrts of water in the 25 quart tub and the water comes to  3 and 1/4 inches high so it's looking like I may not need to put the little tub in the big tub to keep a good RH.

Edit: I also got 8 inches of fruiting space to the lid so I may have been overthinking things.  :facepalm3:  Many thanks for the input guys, saved me allot of messing around on the spot when it comes to laying the sub and grain for the final colonizing stage. Also good pointers for future upcommings. Suppose I'll get the liner ready while I'm at it. You guys rock!

I have rocked out those same 25Qt Sterilite mini mono's. They work rather well. I still do 2 holes on each long side down low(about 4 inch up) and 2 on short sides up high, under handles. I start with 2 layers PAPER micro pore tape on bottom homes and one on top holes.

FYI, 6QT shoebox tubs fit nicely inside those mini monos as trays. Then you just use the mini mono like a greenhouse for fruiting.

I have 2 half-pint cakes that are just about ready to birth, and I'm wondering if I should just bag them, or grate them into a shoebox? I have an oval-shaped, 3-cup deli container that I think might be suitable to add a cup of either coir or vermiculite, or I could just get a shoebox.

Can't tell you whether or not to bag, or spawn them.  If you choose to spawn them consider spawning them into the smaller of the two containers as to obtain a substrate that's deeper over shallow.
