Question about making up gourmet substrate, like for an upcoming shiitake run:
Is there anything wrong with supplementing with whole grain instead of bran?
Just use a portion of grain equivalent the same amount of nitrogen added by a give portion of bran, such as by adjusting using supplementing charts like in the back of Growing Gourmet and Medicinal Mushrooms to get to the same proportion of nitrogen.
Say use 25% oats instead of 20% wheat bran

blobs are a little different and all blobs aren't created equally. bigger blobs usually come of very easily and leave almost no damage for me. smaller little brain blobs are a complete pain in the ass and almost impossible to harvest without fucking up the sub. i usually just take a fork and scrape them all off as gently as possible.
Yeah I was wondering what I was going to do about the blobs but my s.box looks like it's just going to put out regular fruits. Guess I got lucky. Thanks tho

It doesn't really work that way unfortunately- I've tried. My guess is there's more going on in the nutes/physical structure of bran vs oats. High spawn ratios don't really benefit gourmet.

Does anyone wear gloves when harvesting ?
Harvested 3 shoeboxs a hour ago bare handed and I swear I must have absorbed something through my skin.   happy Sunday morning peeps

Hahahaha. I'm sorry. U just sounded like the police that kicked in my door 7 yesrs ago. Lol. Seriously and they were using gloves. Lol. But no my friend. Maybe u accidentally ingested some bleach. Or something.

I thought I saw some green in the sub too. Just the first pic. But it could def be the lighting.
I think JAN is correct. They do look a little water logged. If not watered logged then def wet. Lol.

  yep , waterlogged. I only mist once in morning,once at night. I noticed yesterday my room humidity is up to 60%. Just gotta learn to read them better. Couple other shoeboxes, they look better,

I think they look like they're getting too much direct water. That could either be green or bruising. If it's second flush, I'd assume it's a stump.

When do you tape the inoculation and when don’t you after the jars are knocked up? For instance in the “Let’s Frow...” vid it seems that he tapes the jars even with a verm layer. Feeling like my jars might be stalled and I’m thinking about screwing the lids on tighter and opening up the holes. Thoughts?
