PF tek help
    #25144230 - 04/16/18 07:54 PM (6 years, 8 months ago)

Alright, so I've had 6 PF classic cakes in a SGFC for 28 days now.

I've had 3 cakes put out fruits. (cakes #1, #5 and #6)

Dunked and re-rolled #1, #5, and #6.

Recently read that fruiting from the bottom shows signs of low humidity (or a favorable micro-climate where the foil meets the cake, closer to the moisture)

I've been warned against it, but I flipped my cakes. For 2 reasons..

1.) Cakes #2, #3, and #4 had a strange clear goo form where the cakes met the foil, seemingly cutting off airflow to the bottom.
2.) Also I just wanted to see what would happen... I'm that kind of person.
My second cultivation effort is colonizing now, so I'll get another attempt soon anyway.

The strange goo on #2, #3, and #4 has dried up since flipping.

Was spraying the cakes directly, but since flipping have been spraying the perlite more instead of the cakes.
I fan once or twice with the container lid after a misting just to move the air, but let the SGFC do the rest.

I mainly wanted feedback on my cakes. This may be annoyingly specific, but my cakes have grown a little staggered from the beginning.
I believe some are further along than other, but also 28 days feels like a long time. So just looking for advice.

High performers: Cakes #1, #5, and #6
  Slow movers:  Cakes #2, #3, and #4

Cake #1.
Fruited. Dunked. Re-rolled. Flipped. Currently has 1 small pin growing on top and 2 pins on the side.

Cake #2.
No fruits. Not dunked a 2nd time. 2 small aborts, No other pins. No blueing. Flipped. Clear goo (that dried up after flip)

Cake #3.
No pins at all. Not dunked 2nd time. Flipped. Clear goo (that dried after flip)

Cake #4.
2 pins. Not dunked a 2nd time. Typically not this wet on top, was photographed soon after a misting. Clear goo (that dried after flip)

Cake #5.
Fruited small amount. Dunked. Re-rolled. Flipped. 3 pins on top. Also weird mycelial fraying (beneath middle pin).

Cake #6.
Fruited. Dunked. Re-rolled. Flipped. 2 small pins on top. A couple on the sides.

Am planning on dunking and rolling #2, #3 and #4 for 12-18 hours.
Was considering maybe a spoonful of wet verm on top of these (^^) once returned to the SGFC. Any thoughts?

Also since it's been almost a month, should I remove my cakes and remoisten my perlite with cullender and faucet?

Maybe you're overmisting ?

Some of those look soaking wet. Maybe let them dry out

put them closer to each other. So they maintain moisture better.

Alright so here's what I did.

I've been avoiding misting the cakes directly. I also moved them closer together.

Honestly I don't like only having the foil. Water seems to pool on it.
Downturning caps are close to the perlite. Left 2 fruits alone too long and they grew around a few pieces of verm.

Was reading about double ended casing. Liked the idea of a verm base.

Made small, jar-lid sized foil circles that are holding damp verm (2:1, just like the beginning of the tek).
I only have 12 jars (10 of which are holding my next attempt), so I used one of the other 2 lids as a mold.

I am currently dunking cakes #2, #3, and #4 currently. Planning on 12-16 hours.

When I removed old foil circles and FC was empty, I took a whole spray bottle (prob 20 oz) and really doused the perlite.
Then placed new verm bases in FC along with cakes on top.

Anyone recommended a spoonful on top as well or should I see how the bases by themselves do?

i recently just had a cake with the same clear stuff. mine was from overmisting, and low fae, I waterlogged a fruiting one too.

And i went ocd on the sgfc during that time, staring,misting,fanning,staring... hope it helps.

Follow what is proven to work instead of assuming and modifying what you think is the right way.

Mist cakes directly to a glisten and not saturate. The overspray will keep perlite damp. The mushrooms dont grow on the perlite. Fanning is outdated, a proper sgfc and setup moves air itself. You want a finer course verm. Read and follow the teks. Trying what you think is right is most likely your issue. A dunk is 24 hours to rehydrate. Bottom watering techniques are very useful after pins come in. The cakes are each their own organism, they will grow at different speeds. Flipping is a no no, but seems you dont listen and follow any teks anyways... good luck!!

Point taken for sure, but I wouldn't have flipped them if I didn't have a second run tee'd up. Now I know way more than when I started in January. (Not saying I know a ton or anything, but this first grow has taught me a lot).

Some of my conditions weren't ideal from the start, so I guess I started taking curious liberties. This attempt I exercised moderate-poor misting/fanning tek initally, had coarse verm, and had to stall growth in the fridge for 10 days as I had unexpected travel.

I definitely try to listen and follow the teks, and plan on having more adequate/appropriate/consistent on this upcoming attempt. Verm's in the mail.

"Trying what you think is right is most likely your issue"...

But for real, thanks for your input and information!

I dont mean to come across nasty or rude either, i do apologize if thats the case. The proper setup is important. Surface conditions are more important though. There is nothing wrong with experimenting, we all do it at times. You can get results all types of ways. For best results many years have been put into these teks and procedures. The up to date ways are to let you achieve the most. We all start somewhere and somehow. The passion and learning is all part of the experience.

I may have read it that way initially, but I dispelled any thought of rudeness soon after. No worries at all, and I do appreciate your responses.

Much respect to the tek, for sure. Next run will be by the book as possible. Everything I've read here since 2013 has just seemed like wizardry. Weird to find myself with my own cakes in an fc, typing in threads I used to only read.

Will definitely be referencing your links on my next run, hoping to sterilize some jars over the weekend and inoculate with some Ecuadors.
