Too much condensation on pf tek jars after PCing, why the F???
    #25138912 - 04/14/18 04:21 PM (6 years, 8 months ago)

Hi, i'm really pissed off because i keep wasting my time and resources with wet jars after pc'ing them.

The truth is i don't know why this is happening.

I made sure the jars were completely out of the water inside the PC. I used a layer of rings and a couple of aluminum trays. The jars are not even touching the water. There's at least an inch distance between water and jars. Is this not enough?

The PC seems to be working all right. I let it vent for 5' before i put the weight on and the steam was released in a even way.

I wrapped the jars with foil before PC'ing them.

I PC'ed for 75 minutes.

I waited more than 12 hours before opening the pc. The pc had cooled down properly when i opened it.

This is what i got:

That is way too wet right? No use in inoculating those jars, correct?

Could it be that the burners on my stove top are all "big"? You know how you usually have 3 big ones and 1 small? Mine are all big. Maybe i'm giving too much heat to the PC?

Does the fact that they are plastic (pp5) jars have anything to do with the condensation?

My only guess is that the distance between the water and the jars is not long enough.

Next time i will place the jars even higher inside the pc.

What do you guys think?

Thank you for your time.

I find that after sterilizing my pf tek jars there is always noticeable amounts of condensation inside. Its very hard to see through the plastic jars to really tell what im looking at though.

I personally would never use plastic jars like that. it could be the issue itself. get some glass jars and see if the condensation is different. I had many issues with this myself. those still might work but they do look very wet

I've seen teks with plastic containers before. That should not be an issue.
I will try glass nevertheless the next time.

Can you describe the process you used to mix the substrate itself? Did you try opening a jar and seeing what the sub felt like? It shouldnt matter how far the jars are from the water, as long as they aren't touching it.

Well, 2 things. Moisture could of gotten in via steam. Its a pressure cooker and pressurized gas finds its way into almost everything it can (your inoculation hole and ge hole)

Or our sub got past the evaporating temp of water and your water evaporated and condensed on the side of your jar.

First off get some glass jars as stated. Second you should let them cool for 24hrs after pc'ing them before you open and transfer them to your SAB. Also your substrate should not be sticky to the hand when testing its field capacity, meaning it is better to add a little less water to your BRF/Verm then having to much as there is always a little condensation in the jar after sterilization.

I followed RR's video instructions. The classic 2:1:1 recipe. First i mixed the verm with water really well and then i mixed in the BRF. I mixed it up really good and then i grabbed a handful and squeezed as hard as possible but no water was dripping. Not even a drop. I'd say it was a bit dry but i read that better a tad dry than a tad wet.

I opened a jar and the dry verm layer was actually dry. The rest of the substrate was i think ok. Not too moist. Just a little bit. I'd say the condensation probably did not affect the cake too much.

Edit: The substrate in the jar i opened after pc'ing was definitely stickier than it was before pc'ing.

I wish i could find those beautiful mason jars man but i live in a country where getting them is not an easy task. I been using glass tumblers with foil lids in the past. Not the best.

The substrate was not sticky before loading the jars. It was actually moist but not sticky, almost dry. I know you always get a bit condensation but i think i got too much.

Your jars may work fine if they aren't too sticky. When I make pf tek I find that the sub become a little sticky but crumbles if you apply some force after i steam it.

Yeah, fuck it. I'm gonna inoculate them.

Thanks.

RR dixit:

I don't care much for plastic lids.  They tend to expand and get loose during sterilization

Maybe this is the reason why there's usually lots more condensation in plastic containers?
