Cloning question.

How important is it to take tissue near the base of the mushroom? When I took some tissue for a couple fruits I had, I tore it open and took my tissue from more towards he top of the stem, like middle/top. I read how to clone quite a while back and guess I forgot or didn’t think it mattered where to take tissue from. So, think it will still work? Or will it take longer?

I've taken a sample from the cap and they've worked fine.

I dont think it really matters.
The only difference ive notices is that the mushrooms are usually denser towards the base so it is easier to scrape a sample off than in the more hollow parts. For me at least.

Some will argue that the stem has a bit more vigorous mycelium when it comes to cloning. Really it doesn't matter imo. You can take a biopsy from either the butt of the stipe, just below the gills, or the cap itself. In the end it will have identical genetics etc.

I think a lot of it boils down to the inside of the stipe is less exposed to contaminates than any other place on the mushroom. I could be wrong thou.

I only take my clones from the inside of the cap because the tissue there is not "stringy" and fibrous like the stem tissue, making it much easier to cut out and lift off. I grasp the stem and rip the stem lengthwise towards the cap and it rips the cap in half too.

Sounds like I’m good to go, or ‘in the clear’. Good to know. I just went ahead and took my tissue, then decided to go read the tek lol. I will just wait for growth then, thanks for the reassurance everybody. My pieces are like dark blue almost black though, they bruised up really bad, I’m sure that’s not a problem either.

Not a problem, it will look like total ass for about 2 or 3 days then all of a sudden it will start to grow right.

I've taken transfers from all over the stem. As long as it was from the center and not the outside you'll be fine.

I just checked out my first one I did. The piece looks like it’s getting fuzzy, so that’s good, I hope. Looks like mycelium.

This is correct, and is a major identifying characteristic when identifying whether or not mushrooms found in the wild are psychoactive.
