Hello everyone...first post! Contamination question
    #25137192 - 04/13/18 10:40 PM (6 years, 9 months ago)

Hi everyone. First off I'd like to say this forum is awesome. Did a LOT of reading on here before starting into the hobby and all the information definitely helped start me on a decent path. Did two "test" cakes before trying a full batch and was very satisfied.

My question is this. I had 6 cakes in one chamber and everything went perfect for the first flush. After dunking though a few cakes started producing wet looking fruits. If I can figure out the attachments I will add a picture. But basically a few fruits look like they are soaking wet and I don't mist at all once I get pins. The caps are uniform in color so it doesn't appear to be bacteria but that's why I'm asking. The stems are also almost see through and when dried we're very very thin. So given that the first flush was fine and the previous test cakes  also only produced nice meaty fruits I'm wondering what the deal is with these and if they are safe or if I should just toss them and do another batch.

The strain is GT and I'm using a modified "mushroom cube" system. Bought the system thinking it would be perfect then a few days after placing the order found a thread about it and the experts (all you fine people) we're not happy with it at all. So I did the test cakes with the as is setup then modified it and saw definite improvement on the first flush of the six cakes. Will post further info on the way I modded it if necessary.thank you in advance for any help.

Here are a few shots of the first flush. Had to leave for an emergency...and though they would hold out until I got back but a lot can happen in a day. So I just made a bunch of prints from the cake that was fully matured.

These look damn good to me.. Nice Job on those, first off.

Definitely look really wet. But, mushrooms are roughly 90% water anyway, so we aren't in too bad of shape. When you dunked them, did you let them soak or anything like that? The first flush was nice, was there anything different at all about your "routine" before starting the second round?

These are definitely safe to eat, they are just super saturated. I've had this happen to me when I started out. I would over-mist the shit out of my tubs. And my FAE was horrendous. This could be a combination of those two very things (FAE / Too much misting).

I would guess to say that if anything I have to much fae...the mushroom cube system has a fan that constantly pushes a slow airflow into the Chambers. It has a ultrasonic humidifier that would kick on an send the mist in with the air. I modded it by taking the air intake chamber that was filled partly with water and the humidifier and just filling it up with perlite that I keep damp so the air being pumped through is humidified from passing through the wet perlite. Along with that I mist/fan only until I see pins then just let the humid air do the rest.

As for the dunk... Because of the spores released from the one cake I rinsed the cakes thouroughly but gently and put them in water for about 20 hours (would have done 24 as usual but life was getting in the way). So apart from it only being a 20 hour soak nothing was done different. I'm still working out the wet verm jar lids and have read that stray verm or water in the chamber can cause bacteria issues so I figured better safe than sorry. Thank you for the input

You can't have too much FAE

My guess is that because your humidifying your chamber the cakes didn't dry out like they normally do in a shotgun fruiting chamber so when you went to dunk them they got overly waterlogged.

The fruits looks fine though. Let your cakes dry out a little before turning your humidifer back on.

You can never have too much fresh air. Mushrooms thrive on fresh air. You can literally grow in the open air without a fruiting chamber just by misting often.

I figured that...read a post about a guy growing in open air and just misting alot.  But I knew it couldn't be to little fae.

As for the waterlogged thing it makes sense now that you said that. I'm still figuring out the in's and outs of this hobby. It does seem like after the first flush the mycelium looks matted and not nice and fluffy so I took that to mean it was drying out. Trying to make lemon tek out of a lemon (mushroomcube) so I think I'll put the fan on a timer so it allows the humidity to drop a bit then bring it back up. If it's all ways as humid as possible then there isn't a chance for evap from the cakes. It's all a learning experience thank you for the input. Really appreciate it.
