birthing jars question
    #25135581 - 04/13/18 11:45 AM (6 years, 9 months ago)

Whenever i birth my BRF jars the top layer of vermiculite gets hard i suppose its from the moisture or mercelium but i dont see much white when i scrape it off. Ive been scraping it all off until i see the white but its very tough to scrape off. My question as follows is this ok to leave on? After scraping to the white im left with very little cakes after birthinv my half pint jars. Im considering starting to use pint jars but just want to know what is the better thing to do leave it on or scrape it to the white? Thank you for your input ahead of time!

You don’t need to scrape the verm off.

Do you have any pics?

You should be leaving the cakes alone while they colonize to 100%. There should be a thin layer of verm as your barrier, but usually people are not scraping anything off during colonization. Is that what you are doing?

Or are you scraping this off when you have already colonized the jars to 100%?

I only remove what easily brushes off with my finger.

No pics my bad i just thought i read somewhere you scrape that Off. Perhaps it isnt 100 percent colonized but im pretty damn certain it is because after a certain point it doesnt grow anymore and they actually start pinning if i let them sit too long. Perhaps i will try to get pictures. I can also tell this is just verm im scraping off or atleast pretty sure. Id be very dissapointed if i was scraping uncolonized parts off. Then again im new to growing and learn something every time. Im going to just combine these last two cakes and next time try to wait a little longer. Also ive been using fine vermiculite could this cause it to get wet and stick?

There is loose dry verm on top of the stuff im talking about. I guess it only makes sense they arent colonizing to 100% possibly from using fine verm? Idk i think im going to try a different metbod than brf next time...god damn i feel like an idiot now wasting product

Perhaps i will go into the trash can and gather up the "wet" verm and stick it back onto the cakes :crazy2:
