Hey all, little bit of a noob but have tripped many times. Could I get some pointers to searching in NSW? I live on the Gold Coast and drive down around the Nimbin area with friends quite a lot to skate the mountain roads. I've heard in Australia when it gets colder around April / May that there's more actives in NSW than SE QLD? Also is there a QLD thread, I can't seem to find one, cheers!

Generally start south of the MNC of NSW, henceforth no QLD pages for winter species.

@Entheopsybin Dude, use a knife to cut the stems at the base don't just rip up the mycelium. That's how you kill a patch. Take care of the little bastards.

so when you say 22 degrees at day, does that mean subs will thrive on a warm sunny winters day after a heavy downpour for a few days?

Aborting is where environmental conditions change during primordia or pin development and leads to the mycelial network stopping flow of nutrients to that pin/primordia.

What a great Autumn so far, dry and hot. Been out to my normal spots twice, not only are there zero actives, there are essentially zero noticeable fungi all together. Really wanted to use this season to get my hands on some Clathrus archeri spores. Normally by mid April I can go on a walk and find fungi and actives everywhere, this season seems like a complete dud though so far.
Someone needs to do a rain dance and drop the temperature 10 degrees.Quote:

This seams a bit warm right? Usually fruiting happens around 1°C to 15 °C from experience. Agree on the humidity though. Another good tip is slopes facing South East always seem to be better from experience as well.

I found a few but they were very scarce and all inactives. I found mycelium becoming active in many places tho but it isn't doing anything spectacular. I'm curious how long it takes for mycelium to start producing mushrooms after it has become active. Maybe the mycelium just wants more rain :/

Hey guys.
This is my second year hunting and the hot dry weather is killing me. Is it possible for heavy fogs and mist to raise humidity enough for fruiting to take place?

From what I have read you need RH >60% to get subs and fog occurs when RH is at 100%. I don't know if you also need rain in addition to this but you do need to have wet ground for mushrooms to grow.

Been raining all day today for the first time in a good while around South NSW, noob hunter so apologies for the dumb question but would tomorrow be a good day to have a good old search or should I leave it a couple days? Had a look along Murrumbidgee the other day but the place was drier than my nans elbows and not a single shroom in sight

Last rain was a fortnight ago and even that is sufficient, I found a flush two days ago despite a 2 week dry spout so any day is a good day. Answering your question though, I doubt tomorrow is not long enough for a full fruit body to develop from the rain but checking for pins and locations for the future can't hurt.

I heard there was some nice showers overnight in the blue mountains, and some more showers/rain forecasted in the coming few days.
How long will it take to see the subb fruitions of it? E.g. couple of days?

So much blue!

I came across a bunch of possible P. alutacea too

Also came across a couple of subs too...super blue like yours. A few metres away I came across a new growing patch of something, probably those P. alutacea looking things, but fingers crossed they're subs:

Loving this Sydney rain

A lot of little buggers were left behind

A few very blue specimens and an old one

And a couple of other mushrooms were hanging out to trick the newbies

Nice man!
It looks like they were found on ground without mulch correct? I'm experiencing only finding subs where mulch/woodchips have been laid out, not just on a ground non-touched by any persons.
A lot of little ones left behind? Send me the GPS and Ill keep an eye on them for you
I had some luck earlier too:

I gotta say these ones the stems where much thicker (but stained blue) than my previous find.
Quick question to anyone, can a sub be left without refridgeration after being picked and spore-printed (approx 16-20hours) and not lose anything other than slight potency?

Yeah dude, it's an urban spot but not man placed wood chip.
Also I've personally left fresh subs in a paper bag for longer than a day without any extra rotting so that shouldn't be an issue.
Nice finds by the way, lookin good

Is there a Sub lookalike that has pale cream gills instead of dark brown? Seen a lot around that look pretty much 100% identical to subs aside from the gill colour which is a pale cream colour.
Familiar with Galerina but these ones still have white stems, no Annulus, no reddish colouration and bluing. They seem to be lacking any real visible spores as well on the stem but there are flecks of what seem like... purple brown spores?
I suspect they might just be subs with pale gills, but it's something I've not really come across before. Should have taken a picture damn.

Hey guys, newbie here. Looking for some advice on locations/habitats.
I went searching for subs today in Belanglo and Penrose state forests, which are mostly damp pine environments. Not that grassy. I found plenty of common mushrooms, including a couple of amantias, but the subs eluded me. Was I looking in the right place? Any help appreciated

Hey friend.
I'm very much an amateur still, but I've been having luck this season, it's offered me opportunity to observe Psilocybe subaeruginosa in different stages of life.
This might not be helpful, but I've observed lots of smaller subs having white/cream gills, I think it's because they're too young to produce spore yet. Don't quote me on that though!
Here's a young sub I found today, do the gills look like this?

Visited the Blue Mountains today. Oberon forest in particular. Plenty of mushrooms, just no subs. I feel like I must be looking in the wrong environment.
Here's a picture of the kind of areas I was looking at.

Keep hunting dude, you're in the right environment. Psilocybe subaeruginosa are wood lovers, search where fallen branches, trees and pine needles meet with grass.

I was looking out for that blend of grass but the problem with state forests is the pine is usually divided from the eucalyptus and such by dirt roads. Guess I'll have to go more rogue and find more natural locations.

Personally, I have the most luck with woodchip beds on the side of the road. I have yet to find any subs in pine needles or in the bush/grass despite seeing a lot of them in the other states threads. Maybe I'm not looking in the right places, but in my experience woodchip beds are usually the best. Here's some more pics from the weekend. Happy hunting!

I've been hunting all week throughout the Brindabellas. I'm trying to go down off beat fire trails and walking tracks that aren't on maps and are well hidden in the heart of the Brindies (ACT)...yet no prevail so far. Seen a lot of activity, and A LOT of big sub lookalikes, but none of the good ones. We've had a good amount of rain this week. Is the season still fruiting for y'all? I'm heading out tomorrow for a big hunt.

Some friends found these while trekking in the Blue's somewhere

Not looking for any massive feedback as i can't give detailed info but just wondering if anything bad stands out, they said they've tripped before from them but cannot identify even the name of the species or name essential characteristics of identification like gills, stipe, bruising etc. Just concerned as a friend will also be taking them.
thx

Yeah I went ‘bush walking’ in the mountains yesterday - not even a sniff of a mushroom, let alone anything mystical. I’m a newb though so don’t have any known patches. I was out of the country for the recent rains - was that the main flush or do people think there will be more to come?

I went bushwalking up there too, couldn't find much at all.., I came across a g up look alike tho. Are they usually found on top of valleys/mts, on the way down, at the bottom were its more wet or in more flat environments someone shed some light about this plz. I think this will be the season i'll encounter some, but damn also does any1 have some info about using intuition/listening, letting it find you?

Found a pine plantation nearby, it has really dense foliage on the ground, and also seems to have some wallabies in it, would this make it a good area to find subs?

They are near impossible to identify in that condition. In future, never eat mushrooms if you're not certain what they are.

Hey folks, had a bit of a lunchtime hunt in urban Sydney yesterday and found these little rascals. Spore print didn’t work but they’re bruising nice and blue. Can anyone confirm if these are my first subs?
If they are what I think they are, would you give you them a couple more days to develop?

In my limited experience I'd say def not active. There's no bruising and the gills are free.
As to what they are....someone smarter than me will need to answer that.

Same thing. No bruising and gills are free. My understanding ( am I right) that Psilocybes always have attached gills .

Those are subs, congrats. There is one dubious character with a dark brown hat in the background, but that could just be variation. Definitely give them some time to develop and if you can, check on them periodically. A couple of the front ones would be okay to pick. If they didnt print you must have picked some already?
Edit: Make sure to check each individual specimen for bruising and post a photo of the picked specimens for absolute confirmation.

Awesome OOISI, so all my creeping around in parks hasn’t been in vain! I took one as a sample - will take another look tomorrow and if ready for harvest, check them all for blueing, spore print and post an ID check.
Checked out some other parks today - no more subs but lots of pretty inactives.

Any tips on areas of Blue Mts or Sydney that still has active flushes?
Keen to go for a walk after all the recent rain
Appreciate any tips you feel generous to offer
PS - I'll be in Glenbrook tomorrow (Sunday) - anything in this area?

A quick report from yesterday's visit to Glenbrook - very dry - not a shroom in sight.
Seems like little of the deluge we had in Sydney made it to the lower mountains.
Any reports on conditions in the upper mountains & over the back - Oberon etc?

Found a few between leura and blackheath a couple of weeks ago but most patches i see have already been dug up. People are ripping out big chunks of the mycelium instead of just cutting the stems so there doesn't seem to be a lot left.

Thanks Shizz
How close to the coast do reckon they'll grow? Swim has heard that they're on the outskirts but was curious how close to the north eastern part of Sydney in particular?

The biggest surprise for me was finding shrooms in an area like this:

Whereas I was previously looking in areas like this:

There's definitely heaps of mushrooms to be found in the latter but I reckon the magical ones are rare here. They love the artifical woodchip that gets laid in public parks. I spent a good hour walking along a paved concrete path and scanning the chipped beds along the side. Glad that I have a better idea of what to look out for now.

Yeah so strange, any I’ve found have been on the side of paths, or under tree canopies near roadways.

I'm not an expert so I'm unable to ethically comment on those photos, but what i can advise is always spore printing your finds, even those if they're still viable, by doing this you will allow the experienced contributors to make a much more accurate genus and species assessment for you.

The humble result of my first haul.

So they're in there with a desiccant. That deals with moisture but in terms of the trapped oxygen, how long could these feasilby last without potency loss? I've read of putting them in ziplock bags, sucking the air out with your mouth and then resealing them. Should I bother with that or is what I've got going enough?

It's crazy. I revisited my spot today and found even more patches of subs, just growing right beside a walking path. I shouldn't complain but it's taken some of the excitement away of finding them when they're so abundant haha. Exploring pine forests is more fun! You don't get weird looks from strangers while you try stand inconspicuously with a brown bag and scissors in your hands as they walk past.

Once your at a patch, dont stand around. Thats conspicuous. Do what you gotta do and ignore everyone else. Its hard, i know. My hands shake when taking photos. A guy came up and asked my what i was doing not long ago. I just said photographing mushrooms. We exhanged a few words and he went on his merry way. It turned out fairly well except my hands were shaking and i started to sweat a bit afterwards.
Take your photos and do your picking. Minding your own business. Dont stop what your doing in the middle of it and dont loiter. Those i think make it worse. Im trying to get the hang of this stuff myself, those are my tips.

Yeah I pretty much reached that point after the third or fourth persons past me. I was snipping some and putting them in my bag when this dude on a bike snuck up on me. I just smiled at him and kept on going. Not giving a shit is key right. Honestly, if someone asked me about what I was doing I'd probably straight-up tell them about the mushroom's magical properties. Might spark a bit of curiousity in them.

Hey everyone...
Been following this thread since early May after failing to find anything just north of Jenolan in the pine forest. We went back up a few times over the last couple months and haven't found a single sub... lots of amanitas the first time we went up.
It was still pretty hot fairly late in the year so thought we'd just keep an eye out.
We've just had a shit load of rain down here in Sydney over the last two weeks and now it's going sunny for a while... anyone have any recommendations or any red flags before I head up again? Drivin up to the mountains in the next couple days.
Thinking I might check out Hampton State forest and the pine forest north of Jenolan while I'm up there.
Cheers

So we went up to Jenolan, found a lot of fungus... only managed to nab 3 actual subs.
There's a lot of this:

Tried to get a print out of these ones, but alas I was too late.

I've been on a few hunts this year and haven't found anything ...

Hey guys, complete newbie here looking for some help identifying these mushrooms that I found out on a hunt. Haven’t taken a spore sample yet. They were found in a leafy reserve by a creek that gets soaked/flooded when it rains in western Sydney suburbs.
Any help identifying would be much appreciated!

Can't identify, but I know those are not psilocybes. You'll see heaps of those around atm. They're everywhere as the rain flushes all kinds of species.
What you want to look for is a fruit with the similar colour on the cap, but with less of a nipple and not so dark in the centre. Also the stem will be a very whitey-white, you'll see vertical strands like fibres and you'll almost be able to see kind of a dark blue tinge to them if they're a little older.
Then when you pinch the stalk it should bruise to a bluey-black colour after about 2-5 mins or sometimes straight away. Notice how that species has a yellow tinge to the outside and a yellow inner.
Also the stalk will feel a lot stronger than other species. Again, notice how the ones you picked are very weak in the stem, they almost disintegrate in your hand as you pick them.
Happy hunting!!

Much appreciate MM! I didn’t think they would be magical but the education has to start somewhere! You are absolutely right though; these are all over the track at the moment.
Went for another walk at lunch and found some more varieties:

Found some on the weekend in Sydney. I think the mountains are too frosty so I don't think they can grow there now. As for cubes I don't know when they start but I think it has to be really warm.

Hey, I've just started looking in the last few weeks in Katoomba but unfortunately have had no luck finding mushrooms at all and could do with some experienced advice. I've been looking on the side of national park tracks, this place, park mulch and some other areas that were damp under pine trees with lots of needles. Am I looking in the wrong places or should I keep persevering? It has been dry, very cold and windy lately. Appreciate the help.

In my dog's honest experience, he needed someone to show him a specific patch while they were growing. He'd put in probably a combined total of 80+ hours this year searching for them and had come up empty handed repeatedly, however stumbled upon another dog who was also sniffing around, and asked for a bit of help.
You will benefit most by having someone that's able to take you to a specific patch while they are fruiting, and then to have them point at one and say: "That's what you want."
And then to point at the poisonous ones that are almost always found nearby.
My dog reckons having another dog there to show you a confirmed specimen really helped train his eyes (and nose) to the specific type that he was looking for, and has also saved him from eating a few dodgy ones.
Woof!
-Sincerely, my dog.

Hey guys! First time doing all this, wondering if I could get a hand with identifying this little fella? Found him in some bushland next to a little creek, sorry for the crummy photos.
Cheers!

I can't tell you the exact name, but it doesn't look active dude.
You're better off posting directly in the ID sub section instead of this thread my man. A TI (Trusted Identifier) will be able to see it there and confirm the exact species and if it's edible, active, poisonous, etc.

Thank to the Shroomery, this thread and everyone that helped me through my first successful season. I learned a lot and experienced a whole lot too, it's been a very magical season
Evident by these mushrooms, the season has come to an end, I found these stragglers hiding very well, are they safe to consume? I've never had a mushroom in this condition before and am unsure. Thanks everybody!

Don't eat anything with too much bruising, imo if its still mostly brown it should be alright, and it doesn't mean the season is over, they could be back where you found em soon enough

Yes, NSW is in 100% drought at the moment. I wouldn't bother looking until we get a good solid soaking of rain.

Hey Mateys,
Super new to all this, keen as mustard to go hunting though!
I've been trawling the forum for info on what habitats to look for or a bit of a guide for a noob. I know to look at around cow patties after a rain which we have just had but thats about it...
Can anyone give me a few tips or send me to a thread thats got some info for NSW mid north coast??
Thanks in advanced

Looks like the mushrooms you've been researching are for the summer season, currently we are discussing Psilocybe Subaeruginosa, the mushrooms you're thinking of are Psilocybe Cubensis and Pan Cyanescens, so you might wanna read up on the current season (winter).

Howdy lads,
Have been a lurker of the forums for a couple of months and decided to join the community. It's impressive how much knowledge people have on this site, and also how helpful the community is. A mate of mine introduced me to actives a couple of months ago; completely blew my mind, as I suppose is typical.
I see a lot of people discussing cold weather mushies. I know it's not in season yet, but would you guys say cubensis are as common as blue meanies in the warmer months?
Have also been considering purchasing some spore prints from sporeworks (cubensis), however I don't know if they'll turn up or be confiscated. There are a few threads discussing this but they are pretty vague.

So, I’ve been hit with listening to Paul Stamets again in this time of my life having listened to Joe Roegans podcast which was screaming at me as I listened to it - all I heard is - micrdose Callie! So I’m keen to get in touch with anyone who’s keen to share their knowledge with me in regards to it and finding some mushrooms to allow the experience to happen?! I’m on the Gold Coast and wondered who would be able to help out please? Keen to learn and team up with anyone’s who’s keen please!!

Some wicked finds posted here fella's, thanks for sharing
I'm a noob to all this but keen as to get amongst it
Sorry if I'm posting in the wrong spot but had a few Q's on hunting
From what I have read its coming to the end of sub season, is that right?
And cube season kicks in when the temp gets around 40', is that correct?
Any tips would be much appreciated
Or is there a thread dedicated to conditions that subs, cubs or cyans like to grow with temp, habitat and geography?
Still trying to work the search
Cheers in advance S

Hello everyone! God dam, don't you wish we had these beautiful showers a month or two earlier?!
Anyway, I'm preparing for summer time hunts by researching Psilocybe cubensis and Panaeolus cyanescens
I have yet to find any wild summer actives, I want to ask anyone in NSW that have been successful, what kinds of habitats they are finding them in? I know they are dung lovers and my best bet is most likely cow pastures with plenty of grass and maybe some sandy areas near water, but these are just my assumptions from what I've read, I would very much appreciate any insight or advice when hunting for actives in NSW during the summer time.
Thanks guys.

Hi guys, newbie mushroom enthusiast here...im looking for some peoples to collaborate with in finding / cultivating shrooms. Please get back to me if anyone's interested - i have a 4x4 so can travel pretty much anywhere
Im in north-western Sydney and have no idea how to pick mushrooms, but would love to learn how to pick and not kill myself
Since all this rain lately ive seen thousands of small and large mushrooms growing at my local park, so hopefully this is a good sign of growth in other areas

Has anyone heard of gold tops and or pan Cyans growing between Bathurst and Dubbo?? Provided there is enough rain that is.
I am finding mycelium that looks and smells close to P. Cubensis substrate.?!?
May just be hopefull, hope to do a trip to the mid north coast after/ if a tropical cyclone dissipates over NSW wide or MNC at least.
Hope to see someone find some by the end of the month. So happy hunting.

It's cold during the nights over that way, so I'm guessing that you would see those mushrooms later in the season, after the last summer rains.

heya fellas, is there anyone with experience in the newcastle/hunter region who can tell me when you think the cube season usually starts around here? I thought the recent patch of rain and heat this last weekend would have been good but i only found non-actives growing in the patties. i 100% know they grow around this location (west of the lake) in the past.
thanks in advance. i'll make a pledge not to post any obvious non-active pictures or the like on this sacred board <3.

Putting this out there - I'm a PSTD affected person looking to microdose.
I live in Sydney, my ex-mil mate has put me onto it cos that's what's the current best thinking.
I'm up for doing my own finding, i've been reading up etc, any guidance or pointers would be gratefully received.
I need to hunt, dry and prepare small batches.
any tips or hints appreciated. I live in sydney but i'll drive, I only want to run a month worth of it and see if it helps and it looks like I don't need to find much.
Not looking for volunteers, just want to learn how to get this done for myself, hope I'm saying this right and with respect.

You've come to the right place, before you learn to hunt shrooms you should probably learn to navigate through this forum. So much knowledge on one genre, it's a bit overwhelming. Also you've posted in a very strange thread Good-luck with your hunt, sounds like they could be beneficial for you.

This is my second year hunting and the hot dry weather is killing me. Is it possible for heavy fogs and mist to raise humidity enough for fruiting to take place?
Yes it is!!!
Holy shit
