Top of tubs turning yellow. Won't pin on top.

Every tub I make looks fine then when I start misting it eventually turns yellow on top and I barely get any pins. I can't figure out why my grows never turn out that great. My last 2 shoeboxes I made only got me an oz dry.
I went from spores to oats, oats to agar to agar again. I also get trich a lot with oats but have never seen it happen with wbs. It seems like my yields suffered when I started using oats and I get trich a lot more.
Here's a pic of some shoeboxes that have been slowly pinning for a week now. There are more side pins on the sides but mostly pins on the bottom.

Here is a picture of a tub that has been colonizing for about a week now which I haven't misted yet.

Am I over misting or something? The tops of my tubs always look dry. The myc ends up looking matted on top and eventually turns yellow and I getc about 5 pins on top and the rest are on the side. My pins also grow fat but not tall. I'm getting frustrated here because I had way better yields on wbs from spores. Any advice on how my tubs are looking and what I should do is appreciated.

Trich is mold not bacteria. Grain choice has nothing to do with it since molds are easily killed by sterilization. Mold in your spawn jars means you need to take a look at your methods and technique. You could always go back to wbs to see for yourself that its just coincidence.

I know this isn't trich, but it looks like bacteria, right? Usually I get trich after the first flush. I follow all of your teKS and they are great except I haven't been able to get yields like yours. I know it's my jars because I get trich in the jar sometimes. It seems like you need to be perfect in your techniques to work with oats.
Does my sub look over misted?

Don't mist until it's fully colonized.

I usually mist after knots start to form. Which is when it starts to turn yellow and looks matted on top. I think my spray bottle has something to do with this. It doesn't have a fine mist.

also you shouldn't need to do anything more than light misting to make the surface slightly glistening. The block of substrate itself has the water to support the first flush. You're just making up for evaporation.

Every other day a 1 second or so press on mist mode is good for shoeboxes in my dry ass house.

Well next thing on my list is a new spray bottle. I'll keep this thread updated when these tubs are done.

Get a good sprayer, and be sure to keep it clean and use clean water.

I've been lax on changing my water out, but I too use tap. My first shoeboxes got some windex tainted water, they did not like it...

Do hyphal knots always turn into pins? I have a massive amount of knots everywhere but I have like 10 pins total on each tub. Could I have killed them by misting?

You will do just fine my man. You sound like me when I first started Just keep at it, read your ass off on here and I promise, you will get more confident in your methods.
Patience is truly a virtue with this hobby. You can't rush nature, so just kick back, light one up, and wait for 101% colonization before you do anything further

I've been doing this for a year now but only started agar recently. And haven't really had a successful grow with oats yet. This is my first grow in a couple months though.
One thing I'll never understand is when I helped my friend do a grow and I let him use one of my jars and g2ged it into more jars. I did all the work besides mixing the coir with the spawn and his tub colonized 100 percent and was so colonized it was hard as a brick and he got a half pound dry from the one tub, which was a 40q container. My tubs always look like crap in caparison to that one. I haven't been able to get a grow like that ever. And he used my spawn...I don't know what it was maybe the place he lived in. I have 8q of oats colonizing which I'm going to use 4 q each in two 28q containers next. These shoeboxes are 1q of spawn each. I'm going to try wbs again soon.

If it was hard as a brick, that was probably bacterial before even spawning to the bulk sub. But I feel your pain my friend.
Try not to think about what others have done, especially if you are on this site a lot; these people are maniacs with their flushes and agar work, and methodology and technique lol. Theories and experience... It will make the most seasoned mycologist feel inadequate.
Just try to get cleaner and more sterile every time with your grains/wbs, agar methods etc.. Proper use of PC to get those jars nice and clean, then you should have no problem getting those results you are after (and even more) if you sink in as much knowledge as possible.
Good luck man! or ma'am

My problem is my sterile work for sure. I keep getting trich in jars. I'm going to make some agar tonight and transfer a piece of mushroom tissue to a plate once I go over a tek. And when these are done I'm gonna take some prints. I gotta get better looking cultures on agar before I transfer to jars.
These tubs I showed have a lot of side and bottom pins. Each tub has 3 decent sized pins coming in on top. I hope all the side pins get bigger.
2 of them smell kind of weird. Like old dead flys or something. They definetly don't smell like fresh mycelium anymore. guess that's bacteria. They're still growing healthy looking mushrooms though.
