Slow colonization
    #2513354 - 04/02/04 12:25 AM (12 years, 8 months ago)

This is my first attempt at growing, and it's been almost 3 weeks so far (Sunday will be 3 weeks exactly). My jars are getting close to 50% colonized. According to all the different teks I've seen, I assumed they would be just about ready for the next phase by now. From some posts I've seen lately, a few suggestions are to remove the tape, turn the jars upside down, and I remember someone said perhaps put coffee filters rubber-banded around the top after removing the lid. Are there any other suggestions for helping speed things up, and are these valid ideas as well? Is there any point in time where I should be worried that they haven't reached 100% yet? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I would def. put on the filters and atleast dump them upside down once a day so the c02 can run out cuz its heavier than air so that will help

Yeah that will help. I would just pulll the tape off and wrap some foil around the lids and leave them upside down.

Many thanks for the replies. I did flip them over and remove the tape, then covered with some foil. I can already see a big improvement in only 76 hours. I wish I had done this a week or two ago! I will also look into the incubator as well, as that sounds like a pretty good deal. Thanks again everyone!

OK, so it's been 11 days since my initial posting.. and while I did see some new growth afterwards, it has basically slowed down to a crawl again. I have also noticed condensation on the edges of almost all of my jars. Could this be slowing the process? If I were to move them to a less humid place would that be of much benefit? Thanks again for any helpful information.
