Where does the habit of picking fruits when the veil breaks come from?
    #25133035 - 04/12/18 11:41 AM (6 years, 9 months ago)

Shroom lore tells us that when the veil breaks on a cubensis mushroom, it either stops gaining dry weight, or stops producing psilocybin, or something like that.

Who came up with that, and how was this information determined? What was their methodology? Has it been peer reviewed?

Or is this just another one of those things that Stamets pulled out of his ass years ago, and people have been repeating ever since?

Sometimes I wonder if it's a rumor from growkit companies so you don't try to collect spores and do it yourself.  Get you all worried about losing potency if it opens. But idk much really. Weight and potency seem about the same to me.

I like how the belled caps stay together better dried, where an open cap tends to break up. Fresh open caps look better in pictures.

I like to avoid spores all over the place, and for drying purposes the closed cap fits easier

Also longer shelf life before drying if you keep it immature.

I just really like how they dry up when picked just after the veils break

Which could be linked to less loss of potency while drying. Because enzymes, or something.

i think it makes pretty good sense really. seems like most natural things have a sign of some sort. i mean, the veil breaking is literally the fruit bodies way of getting ready to die.

How long do those little fuckers stay alive after they start dropping spores?

i guess it depends on your definition of alive. seems to me like they pretty much start returning to the mycelial  network soon after.

I guess what I really mean is, how long do they keep dropping spores once they start. assuming you don't cut their heads off.

Versus, I guess, if you do cut their heads off.

It is all part of their life cycle... just as plants produce seeds

I feel the main reason to pick as veil breaks is to avoid spore mess. Seems a lot of peoples reason. I have had spores drop in 8 hours, some took 24 hours. I think enviroment and conditions are primary factor for it.
