Okay so I just picked up some shrooms off a friend of mine, he's been lazy and put the shrooms in a zip lock bag and stored them at the bottom of his backpack. He said some are rotting, are they still safe to eat or are they too far gone? As you can see in the picture some are black and some have white spots, and if someone can please id them if possible, he's been doing it for 8 years but I just want to be certain. And how can Idry these easily and stop them from rotting more or can I eat them while a bit damp? Thank you.

If they're already rotting it means there is bacteria which is likely to make you sick.
In short - toss 'em.

Yeah, they are rotten, toss them. Also, it would be impossible to identify them in this state, I have no idea which psychoactive species they are supposed to be, doesn't look like any of the common ones.

Hm, maybe, but the stipes are too thin to be cubensis IMO. I was thinking maybe ovoids. But I really can't tell if these are Psilocybe or not. Depends if they were grown or picked, but I don't think these are cultivated cubensis.

OP appears to reside in New Zealand, so I'd assume something wild from there, Psilocybe subaeruginosa perhaps.

Oh yeah, location helps a lot. Still, I'm not convinced. If he's in NZ, them subaeruginosa is pretty much the only common option. And have any of you ever seen subaeruginosa with stipes that long?

I haven't seen a single one irl, but many pictured ones in this forum, and yes, many of the ones growing in more vegetated or grassy areas appear to grow pretty tall. It also appears to me that in drying, caps appear to shrink more in diameter than the stems do in length. Possibly depends on the cell structure, I'm not sure.

Nice, thanks for the explanation! I guess the ones I've seen (in pictures) were mostly growing from wood mulch, because they were quite similar to cyanescens in shape and stature, but I can see how the ones growing through grass would be taller.

Wow, awesome, thanks! I can see now how these could be P. subaeruginosa. Still would recommend to the OP to throw them out because they look nasty.

I'd beat my 'friends' ass if he gave me those and told me to eat them..
Considering he gave/sold you moldy shrooms i wouldn't even bother eating them or anything he gives you. Could just be some mushshrooms he found outside n wanted to make a quick buck off someone who doesn't know about them.

subs growing in the bush on logs rather than wood chips seem to have incredibly long stipes

the moldy ones resemble the the shrooms i first picked where i didnt dry them correctly. although the moldy ones should be avoided you do appear to have some nicely dried p. subs in the pile. maybe separate the good from bad unless you have already digested them .
