Thanks. It's northern lights strain from expert seeds. I ordered it from a 420 deal, no idea if thats a reputable breeder or anything.

Nice! What strain?

Remember it's your soil that will make or break you, think about everything that little sprout is going to need and have it all set beforehand.

I'm using fox farms ocean forest. When it eventually needs more nutrients I want to do slow release dry amendments. I built sort of a giant space bucket out of a 32 gallon trash can to grow in.

This is 8 days since germination. Everything going good I think. It's easy to obsess over little details since it's my first grow. I was worried because the first baby leaves were curling down, I think maybe too close to the light. But it doesn't seem too bad.

My first plant is going well I think. Today is 30 days since germination. Can I prune off some of the original fan leaves that have gotten big? I have just been trying to tuck them under so the shoots can get through. It would be nice if I could just cut them off. Or would that have a negative impact at this point?

Photosynthesis requires leaves.
If the bigger leaves are blocking the light from the main stems, isn't that bad?

Yeah I don't know what's up with the image. Here's it again with a better example of what I want to cut. I'll try to just tie it down though. I'm already doing heavy LST because I'm growing in basically a space bucket.

My plant outgrew my garbage can space bucket. I had to come up with a way to make it taller. You guys will probably get a laugh out of my goofy ass setup. Basically everything was purchased from Walmart.
Edit: Also I've got a fungus gnat issue I've been ignoring. Starting to see quite a few flying around in there. Anyone have any advice on dealing with that? I was thinking about trying mosquito bits.

The larva live in the top couple inches of wet soil. So if it's dry they got no where to reproduce. It should help. Neem oil in the soil or diatomaceous earth helps on top the soil too.
Nice I think I will try the diatomaceous earth since I already got a bag of it. Thanks for the kind words.

Thanks for the tips. I probably will get the mosquito bits then after all.
As far as how they got in there, I'm using fox farms ocean forest which I have read fungus gnats are pretty commonly in the soil already. So that would explain it.

I chopped down my northern lights strain a few days ago. Grown in a 32 gallon trash can.
EDIT: Also big thanks to the people who helped with my fungus gnat issue. I ended up solving it with mosquito bits. Made a tea with it and it totally wiped them out in one application.

It works okay but it still has some smell in the room. A real inline filter would be much better probably. I originally bought the air purifier to put by my cat litter box lol. I didn't want to spend much on my setup so just thought I'd try it.

My next plant in the space can is the strain laughing buddha. I neglected this plant heavily because I ran out of space for it. I didn't have any place to put it so it was basically under a desk lamp for a few weeks and at one point about 80 percent of the leaves were dead on it. But after repotting and putting it back in the light it's recovering nicely I think.

Stealth isn't a huge concern for me, but it is a slight concern. I have nosey parents and in-laws who are over once in a while and they would not approve. It has led to a couple of close calls where my setup was out and may have been seen or smelled. I found this perfect spot in my garage to hide it. So now when they come over I wont be scrambling to hide it behind piles of junk

And here's the laughing budha strain I am growing. 10 days into flower.

Zenhydro has a 4 inch carbon filter and inline fan for about 60 bucks I've had my eye on. I heard the inline fan doesn't move much air but it's probably good enough for a 2x2.

the totem method! i saw that i think ill stick to the generic style like in the pics. i can always adjust later but i know ill need a dehumidifier. its damp down there
3 purple punch and 2 lemon kush
ill fix the sleeve thing too hanging that fucker was a bitch
Buddy this is wrong, you never want your fan connected directly to the filter. That causes constant vibration which slowly shifts the carbon bed and can cause leaks. Take that fan out and put it on top of your tent with the drier tube going from the filter, out the hole in the top, and to your fan which should be sitting on top of your tent.
Dang I have mine setup like that. The AC infinity manual even lists it as an acceptable method lol. I'll have to change it.

Does anyone else here grow in organic soil and top dress with dry amendments? I was going to ask at what point in flower do you stop top dressing? Or what is your top dressing schedule like in general? I have been top dressing with back to roots organic fertilizer and worm castings every 2 weeks. I think on my first grow I stopped top dressing around 4 weeks before harvest to try to flush nutrients out. I was going to cut it off even earlier this time I think. I'm at 7 weeks now and I'll probably just let it finish with just water and recharge.

I use a cheap Lux meter made for photography for measuring light intensity. If you have white LEDs the conversion is roughly 70lux = 1umol. I got the idea from this reddit post.

My leaves are really turning purple especially on the branches I had to super-crop. Probably cause it's been too cold in my garage. It was getting down to like 55 degrees at night for a couple of weeks before I realized it. I got the temperature problem fixed now hopefully it's not too big of deal.

My first plant I grew, the Northern Lights strain, is smelling and tasting really good after curing for a couple of months. I live in an illegal state so never had the opportunity to try different strains really. Just whatever I can get. This is way different than most of the weed I've had. It has like zero skunk smell which I am used to, all citrus and pine flavor.

Not true. Depending on your municipality you may have to dechlorinate and/or PH adjust your water anyway. Here in portland they use chloramine to both kill microbes and raise the PH of the water to prevent solder decay and lead poisoning. The average PH of our tap water is now 8.4 and that really fucks with the plants regardless of living soil or not. The chloramine also plays hell with the microbe population. Unfortunately there is no single rule that can be generally applied to cannabis growing, each circumstance is different and I encourage people to monitor all aspects of their grow to see what may be affecting it. I also encourage people to look up the stats of their municipal water supply if they are not on a well (also run water tests on your well water).
Do you do anything for the chloramine? My city water has it too but I have just ignored it so far. I just pH balance before watering.

The craziest part of learning to grow weed for me has been seeing how much weed changes in the curing process. The laughing buddha plant that I harvested a few weeks ago did not smell great when I was drying it. Smelled like lawn clippings way more so than my first plant. I thought I screwed it up because I was having some issues with temp and humidity. I just tried a bit after 2 weeks in the jar it's still not the greatest but it's very smokable already. Can't wait to try it in a month.

I grabbed a cheap heater from the hardware store thinking I can just hang it in tent and plug it into the warm plug on my inkbyrd and boom. But.. everything is smart now and you can’t just leave it switched to on. It has multiple buttons you have to press each time it turns off to get it back to heating. Plus they all say not to use it in a humid room like a bathroom. I could heat the whole shed with propane if I had too but thats a lot more money up front than a $29 space heater.
I got to get my shit together and figure out how to grow inside the house. I love my kids but I could really use the bedrooms back.
If you search on Amazon for "ceramic heat bulb" I started using one of those for heat when it got too cold in my garage. I just use a timer that turns it on whenever my lights are off.

Hey all I haven't posted here in a while. Wanted to show off my new setup. You might remember I was growing in this r2d2 type garbage can build. Well I figured I have stuck with this hobby long enough to invest in a serious setup. I got a whole AC infinity setup in a 2x3 tent. With a 45 gallon bed of organic soil. The soil is build-a-soil coots mix, made with worm castings I got from a local worm breeder. Really excited to see what I can do with it. The plant looks kinda sad I think it will recover though.

This is my old setup. I'm still going to keep it for starting plants in.

I got inspired looking at posts on /r/notillgrowery.
I veg'd two plants semi outdoors in early April inspired and very similar to how you did it. Except I went with a ghetto cardboard box. I almost used an old beer keg trash can, but the cardboard box was managable as i was going to move it around from the rain and what not.
I found some 1 to 3 and 1 to 5 lamp base expanders and just used a edison screw type grow bulb. It worked out, light made enough heat when it was cold and the plant is flowering already in early june.
I varied the gap between the ground and box bottom depending on the temp inside. Holes punched in the top to let it naturally let hot air out the top.
I would be concerned about fire safety with using cardboard but if it's not in your house maybe that's ok.
I like the ordinary par38 LED bulbs you can find at hardware stores. Anything around 100watt equivalent or higher is good for growing. Usually they are about 5 dollars each for 120watt equivalent bulbs. I found some on sale at lowes once for about a dollar each. Anything with the word "grow" on the package is more expensive for no reason.

I bought a broken dehumidifier off craigslist for 20 bucks and fixed it. The previous owners were running it with no air filter so the fins were just clogged with dust. Easy fix and good deal for me haha. Solved my humidity issues in my garage. I'm 4 weeks into flower.

I'm at 4.5 weeks flower and just defoliated quite a bit. I might give it a few days and do even more.

What brand of grow tent is that? Nice grow
It's an AC infinity 2x3x6 tent. Kind of an odd size but I had a perfect space for it where a 2x4x6 would not fit.
Edit: I just realized your question was probably a joke lmao

The AC infinity 69 controller felt like a game changer for me. Being able to look at the temperature and humidity graphs and dial in the conditions is amazing. It's fun to be a big nerd and automate everything.

Yeah you are right I definitely should have done a better job defoliating. I actually did defoliate quite a bit. Seems like it's never enough lol the shit grows back. Thanks for the input though maybe I will let it go even longer than I thought.

Damn well luckily I just harvested so I only have one small plant. I don't see any fully grown thrips, just the tiny white ones in the soil. Just watered with BTI and going to do more research.

This is Romulan strain from Next Generation Seeds. Supposedly he has a cutting from the original Romulan strain from the 90s that he uses for making seeds. Who knows if it's true but I'm excited to try it. The description sounds like what I like.
I topped a few days ago and I think I'm going to try mainlining it.

Anyone here use an aeroponic cloner? I made one and am trying to figure out if I need to use nutrients. I was hoping I can just use plain water and put them in dirt as soon as they show roots.

Yes you can use plain water only, it will only slow down the rooting process by several days. I personally use my regular nutrient solution but in lower concentration so when I transplant them and start feeding nutrients, they won't get shocked. Just remember to replace the water every 2-3 days and make sure the water temps aren't too hot/cold. I set 30 mins on and 30 min off intervals to prevent the water from heating up
Thanks. Yeah I have been looking at different things about the cycle times. One person even said 2 min on 20 min off to combat high temps. Sounds like I'll have to just experiment and check the temps.

Halloween clones. I have it on 15 minutes cycle with just pH balanced tap water. I used dip-n-grow for rooting hormone. I put a few in jiffy pellets as well just in case. I hope it works I have some trades lined up.

This is kind of interesting. Yesterday I accidentally broke the stem of one of my clones. I wrapped some tape around it hopefully to save it. Today it is the first one to show roots. It's like the damage triggered something in the plant.

I have roots on a few clones now. Pretty happy with the results on just ph balanced tap water in the cloning machine. I just balance the pH once a day but even that's probably unnecessary. I think I need to take bigger cuts next time, mine were on the small side and the few that died were small ones.

It depends how big you want it to get, looks like you’ve got enough soil to let it get a lot bigger if you wanted to. I kept my plants low and wide like that for my first maybe 5 grows and then realized I had been missing out on prob 10 inches of canopy depth. So now I let them grow a little taller before flipping.
Thanks I think I will let it go longer then. The strain is Romulan which I think is supposed to be short too.

I'm still a no-till noob myself. I started with about 40 gallons of coots mix that I made with worm castings I bought from a local worm breeder. All I do is water with recharge and top dress with down to earth 4-8-4 and worm castings. I recently bought an air pump for compost tea but haven't tried it yet. I'm only on my second grow since I started the bed.
Edit: Also I haven't tried cover crops yet. I was avoiding it because it seems messy. I listened to a podcast recently that recommended dichondra as a good cover crop for indoor cannabis and might try that some day.

I'm super busy this time of year tho so I've just been smoking out of an aluminum can the past couple weeks since my volcano died again. I got a fat paycheck tho and ordered the Venty, a portable vape from the makers of the volcano. I got it today and omg, it was such a nice reminder of why I vape. The flavor is so much better. I honestly hate smoking. It's a convenient way to get high but it stinks and makes my breath, face, clothes and home smell. I can get super blazed vaping and only my eyes give me away. I feel like it's going to take 3 days to get the taste of smoke out of my mouth but I can't wait to have a clean mouth again. I know most people that smoke will never change but I'm so glad I started out with vaping and have stuck with it. If I got as high as often as I do via smoking I'd probably have all sorts of related health problems by now.
I have used a lot of different vapes over the years. Lately I have been mainly using the cloud connoisseur omega. It's a ball vape kind of like the flowerpot. I also have an xmax v3 and a dynavap.

Maybe I'm wrong but it looks like you could use more light in that little box. I'm a big fan of using par38 LED bulbs in small setups. It would be very easy to add a couple. Just about any hardware store should have something like this. https://www.homedepot.com/p/EcoSmart-120-Watt-Equivalent-PAR38-Dimmable-Flood-LED-Light-Bulb-Daylight-2-Pack-A20PR38120WES52/315605321
There's a few pics my old setup to show how I used them. I started with 6 bulbs and went up to 9 bulbs after my first grow was larfy.

100w seems about right for that size. Those par38 bulbs are 14w each, so my whole garbage can build was 126w total. If you know the wattage of that purple light you could shoot for 100w when adding more lighting.

Do you calculate according to the height of grow space available?
I have read that I can expect up to a 100% increase in height after beginning flowering.
I go off grow space. That's correct the plant can double or more in height after flipping to flower. So you can flip when the plant is about half available height or less, or when you think the canopy will fill your space horizontally. It is a bit of a guessing game and personal preference as well. Overcrowding can produce larfy buds.

I finally came up with a little bubbler setup for doing compost teas. I stole some air lines from work and poked holes in it with a hot needle. The flexible tubing allows me to put it directly in the sprayer I use for watering. I like this because I can brew exactly what I need in right in the sprayer. I use it without a nozzle so it doesn't clog.

Aeroponic cloners really are easy mode. I've had near 100 percent success rate with just pH balanced tap water. All I do is pH balance every few days and change the water maybe once a week. Been keeping the room at 68 degrees and about 65 humidity. A little warmer and more humidity would be better probably but it's working great as is.
My buddy gave me 4 cuttings and all 4 rooted. He tried about 10 of his own in rapid rooters and managed to kill them all. Now he's asking for one back 😂.

Somehow a box elder bug found it's way into my clone room. Kinda crazy I've never seen one this time of year.

Does this look like thrips or something else?
I had seen what I thought were thrip larvae in the soil early veg. I added cucumeris mites to the tent and treated the soil with bti. I thought it worked because I stopped seeing them crawling in the soil and never saw any adults. But just saw this on a leaf this morning.
I'm part of a monthly group buy for beneficial insects but I just missed this months order so that sucks. I should just get a new satchet of mites every month I guess.

Damn I think you are right. Looks like a budworm pupa or something. I'll do some more investigating tomorrow.
I'm in week 5 flower so not really sure what I can do at this point. I guess I will order some Dr. Zymes as I hear you can use it straight through flower.
I need to research more preventative ipm if I'm going to keep doing living soil...

I just spent a while looking for more evidence of caterpillars and all I can find is some webs in the corners of my soil bed. Couldn't find anything in the leaves or buds... Hopefully I'm freaking out over nothing.
My soil does have a lot of these bugs now. Looks like some kind of root aphids... Doesn't seem to be affecting my plant yet whatever it is.

Edit: I think I may have just identified the soil bugs. Looks exactly like this and one comment says it's Tyrophagus Putrescentiae. A type of mite. Not harmful to mature plants.

Here's my black domina plants for my next grow. I'm going to try 2 plants in the 2x3 tent instead of just one like I've been doing. Got about 4 more weeks left till I can put them in the tent.

I think apera is supposed to be good. The cheapest model is only 50 bucks. That's what I plan on getting if my cheapo one goes bad.

Today I hit 55 days flower. The breeder recommends 55-60 days but we all know that's usually wrong. I couldn't find any amber trichomes but they are looking nice and cloudy. Probably will go a couple more weeks.
I am super excited for this one. It's looking like the best weed I've grown yet.

Anyone got an ID on these pests? Need to figure out before they take over.

They all grow a little bit different but I wouldn't necessarily say easier or more difficult. Indica strains tend to grow short and bushy which makes training a flat canopy easier. Some strains are more prone to mold or powdery mildew. I think OG Kush was one that is notorious for being more tricky to grow.
Mostly they are all pretty similar though.

How long do carbon filters usually last for you guys? Someone recently visited my house and said it reeks. I must be noseblind to it.
My carbon filter has been going non-stop for about 1.5 years so I ordered a new one and some ona gel. I never tried the gel before but I know not to put in the same room as the plants.

The only thing from AC infinity that I probably wouldn't buy again is the 6 inch oscillating fan. Mine started making a clicking noise and looking online it seems to be a common issue. I don't care enough to try and warranty it though.
And thanks piggy for the input on the carbon filter.

I run my dehumidifier directly outside the tent with it pointed at the air intake. I got a really old dehumidifier so it can be controlled with a plug adapter on the AC infinity controller. Most new dehumidifiers won't automatically turn on when power cycles.

These are going in my tent once I harvest the Romulan. I haven't really done much training with them at all. Kind of a mess but they seem healthy-ish. Once they get in my nice soil bed and under some good lights they should improve.

I learned about it from the podcast Growcast. Someone who goes by "temple grower" was on an episode talking about the early medical cannabis scene in Canada. He mentioned several times that romulan was a popular medical strain at the time and I became intrigued. It's fun to grow something with a bit of history in my opinion.
