Heres one for tomorrow so all im doing is building good life... Some air so we dont grow to many bad things(why you should look at it under a scope) , then strain it, throw it in a sprayer and have at it..... If im spraying a lab I use 1/8 tsp to 25 oz water..

That at least gives me somewhat of a visual reference point for how much material one might use. Thanks for posting those pics.

So you have some nettles, straw, some green-grass, and compost...?

And you bubble/aerate it...How long do you do that for? Just 24 hours?

What is a "lab"? Is that an abbreviation for or does it have any relation to Lactobacillus?

Nice selection of genetics, those are the sorts of varieties/essences that I love. Hashy/floral kushes, lavender, Scotts OG :drooling: .

About training/tying down the plants....What's your method/goal?

Just bending down the main stalk and tying down branches to open up the plant and create more tops?

The past few years that's all I've done as far as training/bending/shaping the plant goes...I'll bend the main stalk over at about 45 degrees (towards the north) which breaks the apical dominance/spreads hormones and makes the other branches perk up, and I will tie down some branches here & there to "open up" the plant a bit more and create more tops/sites for prime buds.

Do you have your own cultures of lab? Or can you buy them? I remember reading that the KNF method is to take cooked rice into the forest and to leave it on the floor for a few days and use that as a starter culture, but I'm a bit aways from any forests or places with lots of trees.

I've heard of that method...I've heard of folks actually burying cooked rice in the earth, in a natural habitat that's healthy and "alive" and leaving it there for a week or so to collect the bacteria/fungi/organisms in the soil.

What I've done is a pretty common method...

I'll make rice and after I'll boil the starch water a bit so it sterilizes/kills off any bacteria/organisms that were on the rice from where ever the rice was grown/originated. Some "teks" say to just wash/shake rice with cold water in a jar and then use that water, but I feel one should boil the water to sterilize it/kill off bacteria/organisms that were on the rice from what ever region the rice was grown, otherwise one will be cultivating some strains of LAB that aren't local. (I can imagine rice from the store will have bacteria/organisms on it that are different from the local region one lives, and I believe the goal with LAB is to cultivate the strains of bacteria in one's local region)...

I'll filter off the rice after it's done cooking then pour the rice/starch water into a jar, filling up only about 1/4 to 1/3rd of a quart jar (leaving room for milk to be added at a later time). Then I'll let the jar of rice water sit outside in the area I grow my plants to collect bacteria/organisms, I'll let it sit outside for a few hours.

Then I'll move the jar of rice water indoors and have it covered lightly, keeping it in a room temperature spot out of direct light.

After several days a film/layer will develop on the top of the liquid and there should be a bit of a funky/sour/cheesy smell to it. Once there is a distinct layer/film on top I'll filter the liquid to remove that top layer and discard the top layer. After it has been filtered, then I'll pour milk into the jar (filled up to about 3/4 of a quart jar) and keep it lightly covered (just enough so gasses don't build up in the jar) and keep it in a warm & dark location.

After several days to about a week or so there will be a layer on top of carbs/protein/etc that looks kinda like cheese, and below it will be a liquid with a yellow tinge to it. The liquid/serum is loaded with lactic acid bacteria, that's what you're looking for.

Filter off/remove the cheesy layer on top (it can be tossed into compost or fed to livestock) and save the liquid.

The liquid can be saved in the fridge for a while...Adding brown sugar or molasses to the LAB serum can help increase the #s of LAB and should extend it's "life".

That's my method in a nutshell...if you need me to clarify or explain it differently LMK

I hate aphids...

....just as much as I hate this fucking wind today, gosh dang. Wind annoys the fuck outta me.

Looks like one of my seed plants in the ground is a lady. There's been little pre-flowers starting to form at the nodes on a few of my plants for a couple weeks now but I haven't been able to tell what they are. As of today one of them has itty bitty hairs start to push out so it's a girl!

To anyone savvy at ID'ing males/females early....Before male pre-flowers start to develop into their classic "form" with that spade shape/ball, do they sometimes look like a "claw" or like "fingers being crossed" ? Or can both male & female pre-flowers have that look to them early on before they start to develop more?

Not sure if this is a nutrient problem or just residual issues with the original leaves from the overwatering. It’s a male anyways so I’m gonna use it to experiment with feeding. I really lucked out this year 7/9 of the plants that germinated were female.

Something has been chewing on some of my leaves. Didn’t see any type of infestation. Gave all the plants a nice blast of water from both the top and bottom just in case.

They look good.

How did you go about taking clones? Looks like you just placed em' directly into some moist soil?

I'm going to be trimming/cleaning up one of my in ground plants a bit sometime in the next couple days and will likely try to take a few clones just for the sake of "practicing"/for the experience. If any of the clones take hold I'll likely just gift them to friends or plant them guerrilla style in a natural habitat, or in a park/in public landscaping areas somewhere just for the fuck of it lol.

I know cloning can be done simply, just by placing a cutting directly into some water...but just wondering how you, and others in this thread, like to go about cloning. Does anyone have a super simple approach to it with out using any rooting hormone?

Do you plan on transplanting those established/topped plants to a larger pot?

I've had such terrible luck with seeds and males...Last year, from the seeds I actually purchased ("Lemon Wookie Glue" from Equilibrium Genetics), out of the 5 seeds I germinated only 1 was a female. I germinated 4 more of those same seeds this year and so far it's looking like only 1 of those 4 are female (only 1 of the 3 I have is showing pistils, my friend has one of them so I'm not sure what it is yet). So far, only 2 out of 9 have been ladies. Super robust and vigorous plants though, the males are crazy stout & vigorous and reek like diesel/skunk/lemons.

Out of the 10 to 15 or so others seeds I've germinated the past couple years, from bag seeds and seeds I've pulled out of my own bud, so far it appears as if every single one is a male. Tho a few of them did end up dying or I tossed em' before they even showed their sex, but all that have shown their sex have turned out to be males.

If some of the seeds I'm pulling out of my own herb are turning out to be male...Then would that be a sign that the plants I grew did not pollinate themselves? (doesn't self pollinating = feminized seeds but with a tendency to push out nanners & self pollinate?)

Maximize growth rate

I’ve never had any issues with nutrient burn or toxicity and sometimes I get some minor yellowing of the lower leaves, so just seeing how much more I can fertilize.

Same here.

I feel I've always been on the mild side as far as how much "nutrition", and N specifically, that I put into the soil. So I've wondered how much more I can use to increase their growth rate. I've never had any sort of "burn" or signs of too much N or anything. And the past couple years my plants usually do have a yellow leaf or two along the lower portion of the plant, but they're green & lush otherwise.

I'm going to give my plants that are in fabric pots a dose of N with some liquid fish emulsion tomorrow (5-1-1)...along with a top dressing of kelp, bone meal, & alfalfa. It'll be the first proper "feeding" for the soil/plants of the season.

I haven't given my plants that are in the ground anything at all yet and they are looking 100% healthy & robust and packing on quite a lot of noticeable growth every day.

I think 5 out of the 6 are males tho, or at least only one is showing pistils so far, so they'll be getting the chop and turned into fertilizer. I think I'm going to try fermenting the male plants.

Things are finally in full on grow mode for me now, I feel like this will be the week where they really start to take off.

Everything is transplanted and has become "cozy"/established in their new pots with roots expanding.

I bent over my clones yesterday, almost 90 degrees to the north, so apical dominance is broken/hormones are spread and more tops are created. Some of them were really slow on branching from the nodes and kept wanting to grow upward, so that should help bush them out more.

I also gave the soil some fish emulsion and aloe vera, the first "deep watering" of the season...along with a top dressing of kelp, bone meal, & alfalfa....then mulched with grass/nettle/mallow clippings.

It is no longer windy, the past 10 days or so have been almost constantly windy in my area (20mph to 35mph winds) which seems to slow down the growth quite a bit when the plants are being thrashed around all day....but I do notice the days after wind the plants seem to perk up with more vigor/strength and seem more "robust". It's warming up into the upper 90s too for the next 10+ days, so the warmth will speed up their growth as well. Calm warm air, a breeze in the evening, and nothing but sunshine in the forecast.

Plants established, roots expanding, no wind, warm sunny days, and some rich nutritious soil :awesome: :sun:

Is it a particular variety of hemp?

Are CBD rich plants being called "hemp" now? I'm trying to figure out what distinguishes something as "hemp"? I've just always associated the word hemp with certain strains of cannabis plants that are used for their textile/biomass value. Plants with a tall central stalk & little branching and very wispy buds with minuscule amounts of resin/trichomes....

But over the past few years I've noticed there are some strains of "hemp" out there with fat & frosted buds...or at least that's what it seems like folks are calling CBD rich plants now, "hemp".

I would love to grow some strains like these, basically dank quality flowers with loud & complex aroma but no THC at all and a lot of CBD>>>>> [SNIP] mod edit : no sources

A friend had some CBD flower a few months ago that was actually really high quality flower. It was frosted & sticky and smelled dank, had an "old school" aroma & taste to it.....reminded me of a classic weed smell. Earthy piney skunky hazey rubber. I would never guess it contained zero THC lol.

I have one more clone that I'm going to put in the ground so I picked up some "hardware cloth" to prevent gophers from getting to the roots of the plant with a barrier. It has 1/4 inch spacing so plenty big for roots to get through, I don't think the clone will grow roots bigger than that as far down as this thing will be within the next 4 months so I shouldn't have to worry about roots choking themselves by growing larger than the 1/4 inch spacing.

But in a random stoned manner I just skimmed over and read the label and it has one of those "prop 65 lead warnings", probably just a California thing....It has me all worried now tho and not wanting to use it considering cannabis can pull & accumulate a lot of metals from the soil.

I'm not sure what common type of metal would be used for this hardware cloth, but I'm assuming some type of alloy that has lead in it?....

.....It is galvanized tho so that should keep it from reacting/leaching lead into the soil, right? At least for a few months I would think.

Part of me is thinking it's California and those prop 65 warnings are on anything and everything including packages of herb from the stores lol, and it is galvanized so it shouldn't react/leach into the soil, and it's only going to be used for 4 months until harvest....

....but then other part of me is like, lead  :nonono: .

I've heard about it....

...haven't done it myself tho.

I'd only want to try it if I had two plants of the same strain or if it was with a plant/strain that I'm already pretty familiar with & have grown/harvested before, that way I'll be able to tell if there are actually any differences & benefits to doing so.

I get the idea behind it...but don't know if the theory translates to reality lol.

I have a hard enough time chopping the plants when they are prime & ready for harvest...I think it'd be difficult for me to shove a knife into and split the stalk a week or so before harvest lol, I don't know if I could ever do such a thing lol.

I'm def curious about it tho.

I've heard claims about TMV infecting trichocereus cacti....

....Not sure if that's what it actually is, but several times over the years in a cacti group/forum people have posted pics of a cactus that has some yellow blemishes/discoloration  and people have commented that it is likely TMV  .

I chopped down my big handsome male today (Lemon Wookie Glue), it was the largest plant that I've grown so far lol....The seed was germinated around the middle of April in a 1gal pot, I put it into the ground on May 12th and it was about 10 inches tall, and in just 6 weeks the thing grew from 10 inches tall into a damn near 5ft tall and 5 ft wide plant!...and with zero fertilizer or any supplements added to the soil! If left to grow on it's own it'd easily be a 7 to 8ft tall plant by the end of summer.

It was a pretty stellar looking plant tho. Tons of vigor/rapid growth, nice sturdy & strong branches, and the thing reeks like dank...rubbing/scratching the stem smells lovely, diesel/pine/lemon/skunk...Since it appears to have some good genetics & traits I took a few cuts/clones (this is my first attempt at cloning), if any of them take hold I'm hoping to get a little bit of pollen out of them to chuck onto a few buds on a few of my ladies once they're flowering in Aug/Sep.

That male has a sister that I'll be growing out all summer tho, she's just a little bit smaller and doesn't smell as good as he does (when rubbing them stem)...I'm actually kinda glad one of them turned out to be a male because I had them planted too close together, this way one of them can grow to their full potential.

One of the seeds I pulled out of my "Thin Mint" plant last year has turned out to be a lady...So that's another plant I'll have in the ground this year.

Unfortunately my "Permafrost" clone/plant has died :nonono: . I transplanted it into the 20gal fabric pot a few weeks ago and the thing just didn't seem to want to expand its roots and take hold, it just kinda stalled out and sat there for a couple weeks then started to dry out and shrivel up....All 3 clones I got of that strain this year didn't make it. Bummed because I was really looking forward to that one, it was the only one I'm growing this year that had some older/classic genetics (Trainwreck & white widow)....So now I have a "Strawberry Banana" in the pot it was in.

I still have a decent variety tho...Capstone, Vanilla Frosting, Garanimals, Sour Lemon D, Wedding Cake, Strawberry Banana, Mirage, Lemon Wookie, Mimosa, and one that came from a "Thin Mint" mother (unknown father, possible self pollinated).

Last year I only had two strains, so this variety will be nice.....

....I'm thinking I might not have enough space to hang/dry everything tho come harvest time lol . And I might have to ask some friends to help me trim, because what I got last year was about the very most I'd want to trim all by myself lol, and this year I have twice as many plants and they were started 3 to 6 weeks earlier than last year.

I wish I had a juicer, that'd be the most ideal way to make use of what they have to offer. I'm likely just gonna blend the leaves up in smoothies. I might also try to make some pesto with em'.

I can imagine cannabis leaves are loaded with nutrition & other phyto-goodness. I chewed up and ate a raw leaf off the plant the other day just out of curiosity, I've never munched on/tasted the plant raw before...It actually tasted pretty alright, had some mild lemony & piney flavors, I can see it making some bomb pesto with basil & roasted garlic/pine nuts.

...but most of what I have will go into smoothies :awesome: .

This plant has a strange mutation. A number of leaves are like this where it curves in the middle and one side is a different shade than the other

They can really take off when their roots have room to expand!

IIRC you and I started seeds kinda around the same time. My seeds popped open on April 14th and I transplanted them from 1-gal pots into the ground on May 11th. From May 11th to the summer solstice they grew from about 10 inches into nearly 5 foot tall/wide plants.

I'm not saying that in a manner of "bragging"...just mentioning it about the topic of growth rate, it's crazy how fast they can grow and how big they can get when their roots have room to keep expanding and aren't restricted. This was the first time I put plants in the ground and dang!...They get real big real quick, too big TBH lol! I'm having to bend/train down the branches majorly (I don't want super tall plants in my backyard), if I didn't bend em' down it'd easily be a 6+ plant by now and 8ft+ by harvest.

I've had a few leaves turn/curve to one side like that before, but sans the shade/color difference between the two sides..I've wondered what the cause is or if some environmental factor could be responsible. Could just be a random mutation tho.

What sort of "fish guts" are you using? Just some bottled up fish emulsion or home made?....I'm going to be giving my plants another "dose" of fish emulsion during their next watering in a day or two. It will be the 2nd time so far this grow.

So are those porch lights above the plants on all night? I kinda recall you having that going on last summer...I forget the situation tho if they're on all night or not. Your plants last year flowered just fine?

I've got most of my plants bent over/branches bent down and "trained", with trellising/support built around them using "giant reed" stalks.

In regards to building trellising/support for plants....I may have mentioned this before last year, but just a heads up for folks that are on a budget or like to save a $ or like to use natural materials that are local to their area, as an alternative to buying bamboo use "Giant Reed" stalks.

Giant Reed (Arundo donax) is a super invasive plant that grows all over the western USA, and likely all over the US/globe in general at this point....It tends to grow in riparian habitats but can sometimes be found in other areas.

The stalk of Giant Reed is similar to bamboo and is plenty strong to use for supporting cannabis plants or building trellising....Since it is invasive, collecting a bunch of it won't be detrimental to the local eco-system.

I collected a load of the stuff a few days ago, probably around 100ft to 125ft (mostly 3/4 to 1.5 inch diameter) . It didn't cost me a thing besides 20 min of work. I just went to one of the rivers/riparian areas nearby and kept an eye out for a stand of the reeds, then cut em' with some clippers and bound em' together with bungee cords. I don't know the cost of bamboo, but that'd probably be $30 to $50+ worth of bamboo. I've actually thought about cutting down a bunch and trying to sell some in bundles on craigslist lol. There's enough folks growing cannabis outdoors around my area that I think there might be a market for it.

Someone asked about the fish guts. It’s the Alaska brand fish fertilizer. I’ve gave them 6 tsp per quart two weeks ago and another 4 per quart last week. All the issues with yellowing lower leaves are gone. The plant I decided not to top has grown at least two feet in two weeks. It’s actually gonna be too tall trying to keep them short enough that they aren’t visible over the fence

Yea that's the same stuff I use.

And this year I'm using it much more concentrated than last year/what the bottle suggests.

IIRC, last year I was using something like 2 tablespoons per gallon of water...This year I'm just eye-balling it and pouring it into 4 gal of water in a bucket, I'm probably using somewhere around to 4 or 5 tablespoons per gallon. I gave the plants/soil one dose/feeding of it about 14 days ago, once again 2 days ago, and I'll probably give em' one more good dose/feeding of N towards the end of this month a bit before they start to stretch and switch into flowering (along with some P & K, via top dressing with some dry meals).

2ft of growth in 2 weeks is pretty good...That's about the rate my biggest/fastest plants are growing in the ground.

I'm looking forward to the day that I can grow plants in the ground and let them grow to their full potential, with out worrying about keeping their height down.

I kinda regret bending/tying down the branches of my big plant/in the ground. Now I'm kinda growing it in almost a "SCROG" type way but sans the screen (I have the main branches sprawled out and tied down flat to the structure/trellis I have built around the plant, all the secondary branches are now growing upwards/becoming tops)...I didn't know what else to do to keep it from getting so tall...I knew plants started early and in the ground would get big, but I didn't think I'd be dealing with a plant of this size already lol. At a rate of almost 1ft of growth a week the thing will be damn near 7ft tall again by the beginning of Aug before the plants begin to stretch/flower. But at the moment it looks like I'll have somewhere around 30 to 50+ tops/colas on the thing. This is the first time I've managed a larger plant like this so I'm curious to see how it goes. A single branch on this plant is practically bigger than any other plant I've grown before lol.

Random....but this is what the weather is like in my area basically the entire grow season, from about mid April until early October this is what it's like. Occasionally getting up around 100 to 105+...But for the most part it's consistently around 90 to 100 during the day, around 60 to 65 at night, daytime humidity around 15% to 25% and overnight humidity around 50% to 60%, calm & light winds during the day with a 15mph breeze coming out of the NW for a few hours during the evening/around sunset. And almost 15 hours of sunlight during the solstice.

My plants are receiving a near perfect sine-wave of sunlight & temps all summer long  lol .

Friday the high temp was 97° but the patio is south facing with a brick wall and a six foot high fence on the other three sides. It was probably closer to 110° in the patio microclimate

The ten day looks like maximum growth potential

Nice.

Day temps in the upper 80s/lower 90s is where my plants seem to be the happiest. It will occasionally dip into the upper 80s thru the summer here but it's mostly 90+ all summer in my area. I'm surprised the plants deal with the heat as well as they do tho. Before I grew the plant, for some reason I always thought they would be pretty stressed out and have to be watered frequently in my climate but I only water every other day at the very most and my plants seem to tolerate temps up to 103-ish before their leaves will start to fold/canoe a bit.

While they do tolerate the heat, and some thrive in it to an extent, I can tell my plants enjoy those first cooler days of fall during late sept/early October.

Microburst in DC. Time to stake her up gonna he storms all week

Is that plant hangin' loose to the side because of the micro-burst?

That's one thing I fortunately don't have to deal with basically all summer, storms/rain/wind/hail .

I've accidentally split/peeled several branches on my biggest plant :sadyes: . Not to where they snapped off entirely though. Two branches split and peeled down a bit where they attach to the main stalk, and where I topped the plant it split open like a wish-bone when I was trying to bend & tie down the top branches. I was trying to be gentle but it seems like the tissue & skin of this plant is so soft that the branches split/peel away from the main stalk pretty easily (or at least with much less force/tension than I anticipated).

Fortunately tho it doesn't appear to have severed the xylem & phloem tissue going into those branches since they are still alive and the leaves are still perked up reaching for the sun. But I imagine those branches won't have the same capacity of water/nutes flowing through them compared to if they were never damaged & split/peeled away from the main stalk...I tried my best to tie up & secure the branches where they split. It is pretty dry in my area so I don't think I have to worry much about fungi/mold or some sort of infection getting into the exposed tissue.

I hate hearing that snapping sound though, always makes me cringe and utter out a "fuck" or a "damn it" lol  .

I see a lot of posts about cannabis split branches and people always suggest to tape it up, wire it like a bonsaid, or wrap it with a fabric bandage or something. Why is it not popular to take the broken branch as a cutting and clone it out?

Yea I've heard of people using tape before.

I've had small splits previous years and just used some of that plastic-y green & stretchy plant "tie" to secure it. I was out of that so I used some small rope/twine, but the stuff doesn't expand and I don't want to restrict/choke the plant as the stalk diameter increases. I've never had splits as bad as this year, two branches and the "wish-bone" where I topped the plant. They're all pretty deep splits but the branches are still intact and hanging on ...it doesn't seem to be affecting the growth on the branches that split, they're still perked up and growing just fine. I built a support structure around the plant and have branches secured to that...We'll see what happens when it comes time to flowering tho.

The branch is too big for me to want to try to turn it into a clone, and it'd likely take a long time to develop a sufficient root system to support it...the branch is about 4ft+ long and has many other secondary branches coming off of it. And if I did turn it into a clone then I would technically have another plant in my possession and I would be beyond my limit/breaking the law. (plant limit laws are so stupid)...but yea, with smaller branches, if one ever splits off entirely then turning it into a clone is def an option.

It’s been so humid recently I think I’m getting some powdery mildew. Even the windows are staying wet in the middle of the day

Bummer...I got a few teeny tiny specs of PM a couple weeks before harvest last year. But it's usually way too dry in my area most of the year for it.

Seeing how much moisture is on that window during a summer day makes me feel uncomfortable lol...thinking about that feeling of humidity/heat. How did that moisture get on the window in the first place during summer? Or do ya'll just have super high dew points over there so that anything slightly cool ends up with condensation on it even during a summer day?

I've never been in a truly warm/humid climate, I don't think I could handle it at all. Humidity makes me incredibly uncomfortable and I've never even felt what a real humid-summer day is like lol (as in down in the southern/eastern states). It's hot in my area all summer 95 to 105+, but humidity is down around 10% to 15% on days like that...and the only time humidity is up around 50% to 60%+ is when it's cool outside. I've never felt what humidity is like on a warm day besides walking across a field of grass or through and orchard that was recently irrigated lol.

dang, muggy.

I knew it was on the outside, but of all the times I've been in an A/C chilled house I've never seen condensation form on the outside of a window when it's "warm" outside. Shows that I've never been anywhere truly humid. It was kinda a brief mind-fuck lol.

Dew point here right now is 41, but it's 106 out.

Rambling about temps & what not...I have to water my in ground plants more often than my plants that are in 20 & 30 gal fabric pots. The plants in the ground are much larger so they're obviously drinking/transpiring more water, and the water I give them diffuses into/gets sucked up by the surrounding soil so that's contributing to it...but I've been watering my in ground plants twice a day in these long hot dry days, while I've been watering my fabric pot plants only every other day at the most. I've mulched the surface of the soil of all my plants with dry grass/nettle/weed clippings from the mower bag, that helps a lot with moisture retention for sure along with keeping the surface of the soil alive.

I need to get a soaker-hose for my in ground plants...One of those coiled around the root zone seems to be a great way to get an even & consistent deep watering.

Pretty sure this is the hottest day in my area so far this grow/year @ 106 right now.
