I grabbed a bag of happy frog for my starts since I'm broke and what a bunch of garbage.  The extra 1/2 cubic foot is pretty much gravel, so no money saved.  I'm going back to roots for starts and vege, might just get a bail of #4, add some lime and castings, and just call that a base mix.

I pretty much use the #4 Pro for everything  including seeds. In veg calphos and kelp are about the only thing I add. In flower I usually have to get some nitrogen into it around week 4-6. Other than that it's the usual bloom ferments and PK.
After a run I like to recycle it by adding castings, beach pickings and chicken guano. Maybe some perlite and dolomite on occasion. Makes kind of a fluffy living mix when it's done and becomes far lower maintenance.
That's when it looks like I actually know what I'm doing.

Yup, went with the #4.  It's been so long since I started a new mix I forgot to go mid level cheap to save some bucks instead of getting RIPPED THE FUCK OFF by fox farms.  I used to start at bales of peat and 4cf bags of perlite, but space is limited in tiny home living and I don't have a whole basement to fuck around in anymore.

I can keep enough soil going for the 2x2 tent by rotating two 55qt tubs of soil mix between pots in the tent and soil cooking in the tub/s.  About three cycles in the soil hits a real nice stride of a complete mix and I can usually carry plants through flower without liquid feeds.  Sometimes a lil surface scratch helps.  it's a super cheap way to grow in a small space that puts out great results, I'm looking forward to giving away a bunch of bud to friends.

AKA you still mess with seeds?  Cloning is where it's at especially when you can test if the mother is a male or female prior to flowering.

Mr. Piggyman  might I recommend the world of hydroponics to you and your beloved 2x2 tent.  You'll never have to buy soil again.  Also the powdered water soluble fertilizers are cheeeeap.  Don't buy the liquid stuff if you don't like the rip off effect.

I appreciate the thought, but I have no interest in hydro or coco.  I'm an organic soil grower through and through, it's what I do!  If I get frustrated with a soil mix I just toss it in the outside mix and go for more inside.  I like being the steward of a little soil mycro herd and their poop forest.  The challenge of making a good mix is the point for me, not the yield.  TBH, I don't even smoke.  The most intoxicating thing I consume is coffee   I give it all away to friends and strangers in need, the dopamine hit from that is it's own reward.

GOOD NEWS EVERYONE!  The MI5 autoflower seeds that are over ten years old and I thought were dead came back to life!  The gibberellic acid solution soak for the seeds seems to have done the trick and many more than I thought are finally breaking soil!  I'm so glad I didn't throw them out when they didn't pop after a week and instead put them in solo cups of happy frog.  Only problem is now I have to transplant a bunch of sprouts since I thought failure rate would be higher and put LOTS in each cup.  I'm so excited to get to do a seed run and see if I can revive the lemonberry pheno.  It's a super rare pheno that's just god-tier cannabis.  I had a couple of growers absolutely not believe it was an auto until I showed them the grow.  It's a first gen auto, so it's a bit of a genetic mess.  The original breeder Stitch is an ass and I'm so glad i don't have to communicate with him anymore.  Just happy to get to clean up this ol favorite a bit.  I'm going to have to get a floro setup going for a bit, really running out of space quick!  What I wouldn't give for a basement again.

Pic Tax:

FINALLY got around to mixing new soil and remixing old soil outside.  Just taking it easy and doing it when I feel like it instead of stressing about deadlines.  One compressed 2.2 cf bale of sunshine mix agg plus with mycos(expands to 4.4 cf), one cf bag of worm castings, one cf bag of veg scrap compost, a cup of dolomite for each cf, two cups fish mix, half a cup azomite, some alfalfa, half a cup rainbow bloom mix, half a cup powdered rock phosphate, some discount Dr Earth tomato mix(basically same ingredients listed above) ten gallons of used soil from last year.....  Dump it all in a kiddy pool, mix like crazy in the pleasant spring afternoon sun, dump in a 45 gal smart pot on a pallet and tarp off to cook until planting in mid June.

I shouldn't have to feed too much in that pot if all goes right.  Hopefully the early finishing F1 seeds I bought will pay off and I'll finish a month before I usually do.  Sure would be nice to harvest while it's still dry out and before large game seasons start.  It would also cut a month off of feeding time and I could rely on the soil more.

Honestly I like watering by hand, but a reservoir on remote that could be adjusted by phone when I'm out hunting would be fucking amazing.

The last time I had a friend watch plants when I was out of town I gave her explicit instructions about washing hands and not bringing anything into the grow room at all.  Well, she decided the pot plants were lonely and brought all the houseplants in the grow room after she had brought them outside for no reason.

:facepalm3:

Anyway, lost that crop to spidermites AND thrips.

What is it about most people that they cannot follow instructions?

I am going to find a pack of Bogglegum and reproduce the line if I can.

Idk if anybody knows enough about breeding to answer this, but I’m wondering how important it is which plants are used to make f2 seeds.

From what I understand the f1s should be pretty similar and then f2 is where the variety comes out and it’s time to pheno hunt for structures and smells and all that.

Is it worth growing a bunch of the f1s to pick from or do people just use any two decent plants and worry about selection from f2 forward?

So far I’ve started 5 of the f1 seeds and they’re all very similar except for one that was obviously more Sativa leaning.  What’s weird is they all have fat hollow branches and I’ve never seen it before. When I super crop them they just pop and crunch in easily kinda reminds me of celery

Always grow a bunch of F1.  They might sometimes present uniform, but they are in fact not genetically uniform.  I also have f1 plants show all kinds of phenos.  Most of what people call "strains" are not actually pure breeding strains, but half assed crosses or just a clone.  Cannabis genetics have gone UNHINGED in the past 15 years since breeding standards have dropped.  Clones, feminized seed, and just mass cheap seed production have reduced the demand for pure breeding strains that you can easily repro at home.

Tent update:

They're all chugging along nicely.

This little bagseed freak from my 2020 outdoor grow is my favorite so far

Herbie's blueberry hill not very impressive so far.  Zero uniformity and WAY more sensitivity than I like out of an indica supposedly bred for easy outdoor growing.  I can already tell this will be my last year with them unless they end up performing amazing and/or have a great smoke.

Only one of them has really caught my eye and thrown the kind of indica build and resilience I like to see

This wedding cake bagseed from the 2020 outdoor grow is looking pretty awesome.  I may attempt an outdoor flower, or just take a few clones and see how she does inside.  Strong uniform growth and resilience.

I need to build a new vege cab to keep bonsai moms in so I can store genetics after this indoor run and get on with cracking my B4 and Cherry OG seeds from MTG.  They ain't getting younger and I really like their genetics!

Anyway, that's what I've got going on besides the autos plodding along.  Going to be a bunch of those sitting around the porch in one gallon pots in the near future.  Fun plants to give to friends for their first grow.

So it sounds like f1 is more important than I thought but that kinda makes sense seeing as it’s the foundation. So far I’ve got pollen from two different phenos so that’s a good start. Really at this point I just want to see some buds already.

It's super important.  Also a tip, pay very close attention to the leaf patterns.  Subtlety is key, but if you find a female you really like, look for her structural male counterpart.  Crossing them will further homogenize your line.

It's bonkers that some people can reduce a line to one stable pheno.  It's rare, but some people have the space and time to do it.

My tent is full of accidents, not breeding.  Sneaky neighbor's plant that dug under the fence and had a midnight row with the girls.

Let's see what happens on year three of mystery donor seeds

Someday I'll have the space to breed again.  Might fuck around and try to make a Stabilized blue dream x chem 4 auto

Where I'm at you can have four plants in flower but can't be within 1000 feet of a school, childcare, ect.  It's definitely an anti-poor law as there is almost no place in an urban center that distance from those facilities.  You can sling opiates out of a walgreens right across the street from a school, or as much booze as you want, but don't you dare have a plant behind a fence where no-one can see it.

I should explain the anti-poor.  Land in Oregon is FUCKING EXPENSIVE JESUS FUCKING CHRIST.  If you have land you either inherited it, bought it 20+ years ago, or wipe with Benjamins.  This forces most poor folks to rent in the urban centers of whichever county they live in.

Luckily the law is almost never enforced.  The police in Portland are so fucking awful at their jobs and trigger happy that we decided to throw them a year long party in 2020 and now they're all quitting, which is good seeing as 82% of them do not even live in Portland.  Fuck off violent occupying force, I'm literally just gardening.

Fuck 12.

If those are half Lao landrace sativa then you are in for the long haul   Pure landrace Lao can take anywhere from 100-140 days to flower.  I'm sure the berry will cut down on it if it's crossed to some quick finishing berry like blueberry.

Do you know the genetic background on them?

I've never believed the green light thing.  I only work my tent during lights on and try to set my timer for when I can reasonably do that.  Before LED lights I used to set mine to flower at night so the heat wouldn't be too bad and I could work on them before bed.

Honestly this is because people now play fast and loose pollen chucking instead of doing intensive breeding.  I don't think it's a critique on y'all as growers at all.  These new "strains" made from forcing clone only cuts to kiss, then quickly putting out whatever it produces without large sample and stress testing to eliminate intersex traits has resulted in generations deep issues that probably cannot be bred out.  People chase desirable traits only instead of also eliminating undesired ones.  You cannot make a stable line out of a whole mess of unstable genetics.  I've seen so many instances of people complaining to breeders about this only for the breeder to blame the grower.  Can't herm stable genetics, sorry breeder egos

Yup.  Sabotaging train lines is as easy as tacking a wire between the two tracks.  It sends a signal to the engineer that another unit is on the line and they are forced to shut everything down while the source is investigated.  Since everything is on a very tight schedule (both freight and passenger share the same rail lines in the US :facepalm3: ) the whole works get completely gummed up.

Get caught and you go to prison though.
