The Official Cannabis Growers Thread * 4
    #25131101 - 04/11/18 04:54 PM (2 years, 3 months ago)

Do we have an "official" cannabis growers thread on the shroomery?

I don't even know if there's more than just few folks on the shroomery that grow the herb...?...If there's at least a few of us, though, perhaps we can use this thread to chit chat about our plants and our grow. If not, then I'll probably just let the thread die and make my own grow journal and separate threads for my occasional random questions.

This is going to be my first time growing the plant (I've been waiting for this moment for sooo long lol), so I might have some basic & newb questions as the grow progresses.

I'm planning on growing at least 4 plants (outdoors), no more than 6.

30 gallon pots. I'm probably going with some fabric pots.

I plan on building a basic "hoop" structure over the plants so I can hang some shade cloth. I won't have the plants under the shade cloth every day, just during some of our super intense summer days. And if we get any late summer/early fall rains they'll be sheltered from the rain.

I'm about to germinate some seeds within the next week or so. Depending how many of those pop open, I might also grab a clone or two from someone local/craigslist.

I'm on the growery too....

....but there's rarely ever any discussion/posts on that site.

There's only a few people that post on that site and not many of them even grow weed.

Im a very experienced outdoor grower, over the last 6 or so years there has been maybe a few months total where I havent had any growing.
At the moment I have 4 sativas which are o ly a couple of weeks away from harvest

Id love to be involved in a thread where I can share experience, techniques and ideas with others. I am also on growery.org however it is  a rather small community compared to here.

The reason I saw this thread is because I was just about to make one in regards to my first indoor indica grow.

OM - in regards to germinating seeds, I have found the most effective method to be placing them in a glass of warm water for 24 hours. After that time, if any are still floating chances are they will not sprout. As for the ones that sink to the bottom, plant them directly into soil (pots, ground etc.) and you should see them sprout within a day or two.

I'm sorry but "outdoor" and "breeding" don't belong in the same sentence, let alone controlled.

For doing any kind of serious breeding (and not seeding your whole crop) you'd need at the very least a dedicated air-sealed room where you flower your males and collect pollen in. Preferably with a second small room where you can change clothes when going out of it to prevent carrying pollen on you.

You could bring your males in and do it the ghetto way, but that means there is no selection of the males taking place and is basically just pollen chucking rather than actual breeding.

Here are some vids that might help, the 1st one shows how Subcool from TGA Seeds does it and keeps his males.

Also this playlist where Kevin Jodrey interviews many of the best breeders from Humboldt/Mendocino/NorCal, great insight into their selection process:

I used to assume the same thing, I thought it was impossible and would ruin my females. Though I decided to experiment anyway and out of the 7 years I have grown outdoor Cannabis, I did breeding 5 of those years to make more seed and create new strains. Zero accidental pollination of other females or even non polinated colas on the same plant.

I crossed maui woui, and wonder woman to make this consistantly massive 15 foot tall Sativa dominant strain i call Maui Woman

Problem is that in my area sativas are harder to finish because of their long flowering time so a couple years ago I bred Maui woman with Black afghani the earliest flowering strain i have ever grown (I use it as a trap plant for budworm)  and this year im trying this new strain for the first time to see if my plan worked. I think im gonna call it Afghani woman,

Anyways, ill make an official Tek with photos this season. However the basic idea is that I keep 1 male of whatever strain(s) I want to breed, on the opposite corner of my property. I top them, and castrate them any time they try to grow balls.

So they are males, but without pollen sacks to burst open.

I keep the males short and nuetered until the females are a few weeks into flowering. Then I will allow the pollen sacks on a single node of the male to develop. The day before the sack bursts open I secure a plastic ziplock bag around the node with a hair tie. The next day when the male testes have splooged their load into the bag, i pinch off the whole male flowers into the bag, seal the bag, and slaughter the male. Then I coordinate with the wind direction and bring the bag to my females, gently open it and carefully slip the bag over one of the lowest hanging colas, and massage the pollen into the cola for a few moments before removing and immediately sealing the bag. I usually inoculate 2 - 3 Low hanging Colas and end up with plenty of seed for a few years. The rest of the unpollinated colas on the inoculated plant develop normally and do not have any seeds.

If I have other males i want to breed with I wait a couple days before I allow their testes to develop etc...

You can also add distilled water to the pollen bag to prevent any pollen from becoming airborn. (I have never done that, but it will probably be a step in the tek)

This year I sowed 10 Afghani Woman Seeds, 7 Ak47 seeds, 1 mystery seed, and im gonna buy 2 or 3 Blue Dream cuttings this week ^_^

Im gonna need to breed the ak47 for more seed for future years, and of course the black afghani in case it is a successfull strain. :strokebeard:

I have done quite a bit of home breeding too (see my trade list for the crosses I do), but I hardly consider that breeding given that neither of us sow thousands of seeds to select a male  and a female, nor do we keep clones of those for backcrossing and squaring to stabilize whichever trait or pheno you're going for.

Most actual breeders will keep their prized males alive for decades and will never share a cut of their best male with other breeders.

My point is not that breeding outdoors is gonna ruin your harvest, it's that making an F1 generation by just chucking pollen from whichever plant you got and seeing what comes out is not breeding. You're not breeding for a particular trait or characteristic, only for seeds.

Also by leaving the male around, even at the other side of your garden, you're not entirely sure every seed is the cross you intended. Pollen can easily travel several miles.

The only "breeding" I've done outdoor was just reversing some branches with colloidal silver to make fem seeds. That way I can mark the branches I treat, and once the sacks are close to opening (a couple days) I put a plastic bag around the branch and cut it once they start opening to collect the pollen, that ensure no pollen goes flying anywhere on my plants or any random grower's in the vicinity.

Don't take this the wrong way, not knocking what you're doing. It's just that I have a lot of respect for the work good breeders put in and I think we shouldn't get it mistaken. Without these people putting in the actual effort of going the Mendelian way about it we would not enjoy the quality of cannabis we have today.

Genetics are 90% of the job imo, give the best grower crappy genetics and he will get crappy results. On the other hand, give the worst grower good genetics and he's bound to get something decent.

 thats fine. When I use the word breeding I mean the textbook definition of "the mating and production of offspring"

Im not trying to make legendary dank strains from bush weed. That obviously takes decades of hard and dedicated work.

However I started with old school, tried and true, Classic Dank strains from the Nirvana seed bank in holland. They did the hard work for me.
So if I breed two strains that are already super dank, chances are good that their offspring will be super dank too. With a unique combination of traits from both dank parent strains.

I have had seeds from a trash compressed brick of seedy trash weed from thailand and simply growing it sin semilla revealed its Naturally dank potential.

Its fun to sometimes mix a tried and true strain with something New and different because you never know what you will get.

Genetics definitely determine %100 of the potential, but I think the job you do in preparing the soil, maintenence, harvest, and curing have %90+ to do with what you get.
Where I live, most people cut corners that have a serious impact on their end product.

I have never even supplemented my plants with synth nutrients, i just prepare a dank 5 foot diameter holes with loose, fluffy, organic compost, mycellium, rabbit manure, and then when flowering begins I add a little more Rabbit Manure. Curing in Glass for 1 - 3+ months in a dark cool place
:awetongue:

Nah man its not personal, everyone has their own way of doing things. I just grow weed so I dont have to pay for it. My veggies, fruits, and cacti are more valuable to me. Though im always trying to learn and improve ^_^ So i look forward to checking out those breeding vids you posted!!

My state legalized growing the stuff this summer, but not the sell of seeds.  :facepalm3:
Do the seeds people buy online actually make a difference in potency? I would love to grow a plant and store away buds for several years. I hear that is a good way to make a smoke specifically for sleeping at night.

Thanks for the heads up about germinating. That's more or less how I was planning on going about it. I think I'm going to start the seeds in small pots, like 1 gallon, then transplant them into 30 gallon fabric pots once they've developed a bit.

I think I'm going to start the seeds outdoors right from the beginning instead of starting them under lights indoors...It's already getting into the season, we're already at 13+ hours of daylight in my area and it won't be another 2 weeks or so until I get around to it.

The seeds I plan on planting are all from "bag seed"...but they came out of some high quality buds and they are all from legit/known west coast strains...I'm just not sure if the seeds were developed from the plant turning hermy and pollinating itself, or from pollen drifting from some other nearby hermy plant  .

The seeds I plan on germinating are bag-seed from....

I'll probably get a clone or two from someone local as well. I'd love to grow some Gorilla Glue and a high CBD strain.

It could have been, my last plants were in a greenhouse and although they were massive they sadly got infested with scale insects that sucked the life out of them :frown:

One thing I would suggest is if you have the option, transplant them into the ground instead of bigger pots. Pots seem to restrict the size of the plant and when grown in the ground they require little to no maintenance.

I plant my seeds in small pots after soaking in warm water, wet the soil then cover the pot with clear cling wrap and place it somewhere sunny. The cling wrap traps in warmth and humidity creating like a mini greenhouse. Doing it this way ive never had a seed take any more than 2 maybe 3 days to sprout.

Then once they get a bit bigger I dig a hole in the ground much bigger than I need and partially fill it with good soil/potting mix and add some compost/vegetable scraps, wet it all and fill with a final layer of good soil which I plant the sprouts into.

Heres one of my current sativas that I water maybe once a week.

Now and then when I do some weeding around the area ill rip the roots off the weeds and pile them up around the base of my plants which acts like a mulch to stop weeds growing and decomposes into food for the plant

The climate where I am (Queensland, Australia) is perfect for growing these beautiful plants. The humidity during summer boosts their growth dramatically.

It's mid Autumn here now and as you can see they have started flowering. Not much longer now and it will be harvest time!!

I'm growing in pots for a couple reasons.

There are gophers in this neighborhood. I don't want to risk the roots of my weed plants getting munched on and destroyed by gophers so I'm going to have them in pots. Fabric pots, at least, though.

Size...I'm growing these in my backyard so I'm trying to keep them moderate in size. It is legal to grow in my state, but the plants have to be out of the public view and I don't want the tops of the plants being easily visible by neighbors (even tho they're going to smell it lol ) . Also, I don't have much room to hang/dry and cure the harvest so I'm not trying to grow too large.

I feel 30 gallon fabric pots will suffice for what I'm trying to do, I'm still expecting a potentially 5ft plant....I might put one plant in the ground just to see how it does.

I'd go with 50 to 100 gallon pots...but I don't have the $ to fill them with the soil I want. Cost wise, that'd be a bit too much for me. I plan on buying some really good soil, living where I do there's quite a bit of vendors selling quality organic soils.

By this time next year, I plan to have some of my own compost going. I'm starting a compost pile in my backyard.

That's actually exactly what I was planning on doing  .

Any idea of the strain/genetics background? Any particular aromas coming from the buds yet?

I'm in northern california, it gets pretty damn hot in my particular area during the summer (95 to 105+ is typical) with low humidity...it's toasty but lots of folks grow herb outdoors around here. I plan on having some shade cloth over the plants on days that gets 95+ .

I'll likely be watering every single morning once June/July comes around, and sometimes probably even morning and evening.
