Lophosaurus said: I hung my weed up under my house and it has lost most its smell and it smelled amazing too. I hung the whole plant, minus some fan leaves. It kind of has that hay scent, but it's still faint. There must have been too much air circulation or something. It got chilly at night, but never got over 70 during the day. I moved it to an indoor closet to finish. Will the smell come back after curing or is it fucked up?
In my experience, that's only ever happened when I put a fresh bud in a container before it was fully dried. Pretty sure it was from the humidity building up and not enough airflow. It got that hay smell and never really went back to its original fruitiness. Under your house sounds like it could be a humid, low circulation environment. Especially if the dew point was getting hit on those cool nights, the humidity in the air could have been condensing on your bud.

My house is only 35%. So going blind will probably ruin my crop.
If you can, get a humidifier that you can bring the room up to 50-60% humidity with. Also make sure the small oscillating fan is not blowing directly on the drying flowers, just need a tiny bit of air circulation.
Have you decided how you'll be trimming? If you wet-trim right away and then dry, the longest that's ever taken for me is 5 days of drying. If you want to go 7 days for maximum preservation of scent, it's best to hang them with their leaves on for a few days at least before trimming.

The curling down of the leaf tips is called clawing, generally from nitrogen toxicity. Thinning out the micro bud-sites on lower branches is called lollipopping, it's probably a good idea, yea.
Leaves breathe from their underside and they need precise humidity to open and close their stoma's. 50-70% humidity is ideal. The pic of the leaves curling along the long edges into a kind of boat shape could be part of the clawing, over-watering, or related to low humidity. The leaves may be boating to create a micro climate where they can hold more humidity and breathe easier. Use a hygrometer and humidifier/dehumidifier to stay within cannabis' VPD. More on VPD: http://www.just4growers.com/stream/temperature-humidity-and-c02/vapor-pressure-deficit-the-hidden-force-on-your-plants.aspx
During veg, only water when the pot is bone dry and light when picked up. You can even watch for the early signs of wilting as an indicator when to water. During flowering you don't want to let them wilt even slightly, but lift the pots regularly to judge when not to over-water them.
The 3-fingered leaves is something usually only seen from re-vegging plants. Means your clone was taken from a flowering plant, which isn't ideal. It may not have had enough time to veg back into a healthy growing plant with 5+ fingered leaves.

62% is perfect for curing and long-term storage. Some people prefer it around 55% for smoking. The humidity packs are worth it.

Haven't heard of using ice water. Purpling can be a sign of a nute deficiency, cold night temps, perhaps ice water, or simply the strain. I don't think flushing with ice water for a few days would be long enough to make a noticeable difference. Even then it only changes the color of the sugar leaves, not the buds themselves. That's all genetics.

Besides the leaf burn it looks like the pistils have stopped growing. How many weeks into flowering are they? There should be many more white hairs shooting out to continue growing over the orange ones. Could be a sign that it was pollinated.

Psilosion said: Yeah I had a neighbor steal at least 20% of our crop where I was living 3 years ago. The plants were 10-15 ft tall, and they got 2-3 plants. They stole our ladder to get over the brick wall and one of them cut the plants down and threw them over the wall to another person. Had to run outside in the middle of the night and pump the shotgun and tell them to leave. Found binoculars and branch cutters in the backyard that they left, and some of our best plants just stumps.
How I know it was the neighbor, behind the brick wall there was a trail of little buds and big leaves leading right to their back wall. They actually called the police on us for saying they did it, thinking we would get in trouble for growing weed. The cops came, inspected the trail behind the house, they agreed it looked like it went to the neighbors but they couldn't do anything about it. They also didn't even care about the 10-15ft weed plants but said "Why didn't you put up Barbed Wire?" So a great experience with the police, but terrible neighbors.
Dang, where did you live?

You misread. Spray coconut oil emulsion on plants before you put them.into flower. Prevents mold spores fom growing.
How? The plants double in size upon flowering. The most vulnerable parts are the colas which wouldn't even be grown at the time of spraying. Silica packets are good for enclosed desiccation, but it won't prevent bud rot which is an environmental humidity issue.

But there's extremely low chance that a plant would mold before switching to flowering, so what's the point? You may kill/inhibit any spores up to that moment, but then you still have 8 weeks for new spores to settle into the growing colas and create contamination. Pretty sure the spores landing on the cola are not going to be affected by the coconut oil that was sprayed on fan leaves two feet lower and weeks earlier.

Humble Newcomer said: Uhhhh probably not, what's VPD lol
Edit - vapor pressure deficit, no I'd never heard of this metric I'm reading up on it now, it opened another door in understanding the plant science, basically the differential between the inside of a healthy leaf ehich should be vapor saturated and the outside grow room, and taking grow room temp and leaf temp into account with with it.
" Leaf temp should not be equal to or higher temp than the grow room air, a 3-5 degree cooler leaf temp is normal, if your leaves are same temp or higher than your lights are too close" - that's a gem I'm surprised I never read before
I know next to nothing about indoor, but I know the Jungle Boys say, "live by the vpd die by the vpd", and they srem to know what they're doing.
So yea, definitely worth looking into. If you like nerding out on that kind of stuff check out the Cannabis Cultivation and Science Podcast. I just listened to an episode that discussed VPD, botrytis and PM, and how lighting relates to all of it.

Can you link the episode? I agree VPD is probably the most important factor 2nd to the light intensity.

If you have time it doesn't hurt to let each bud mature individually. But some lower buds may be 2-4 weeks behind the colas, so you should consider whether the extra weeks is worth the extra weight. Personally I just chop it all down at once so I can get the next round going right away. Anything too undeveloped gets thrown into brownies.

Drying and curing is pretty complex and takes a fair bit of experience to know how/when to keep the buds in the goldilocks zone. Paper bags are generally just used for the last couple days of drying to slow things down a bit so you don't over-dry before sealing them to be cured. If you dry in paper bags right off the bat you'd probably limit air circulation too much and mold them.

If you acquire the hay smell then you've already messed up. But yea, paper bags can be a step back from jars/plastic bags if you smell hay and need to increase the air exchange.

Yep, you can use 18/6 all the way through and their flowering schedule is completely genetic.

Oggy said: Hi guys, has anyone chopped their plants down and left flower/leaves on it to attempt re-vegetating? How successful is this usually? I was just going to bring one inside after harvest and leave it under 18/6 lighting with a high humidity. There are some smaller branches near the bottom of the plant that I was going leave on and use to attempt reveg. Lost the mother I was going to keep before I could take new clones.
I've never done it but many people have and it seems very successful. When I harvest there's always a few suckers near the trunk that live on for days/weeks even without my intention.

You should get a hygrometer to measure the humidity with. If the open window air is too humid or too dry it could affect the outcome. You want to dry at about 55% humidity until the stems start to snap and the outside of the flower feels dry but still a bit squishy on the inside.

Oggy said: I harvested my plants today, 2 weeks early at 10(11? idk, freakin' New England) weeks of flower. The constant rain and freezing temperatures have killed nearly everything outside and more snow is forecast for tomorrow followed by week long freezing temperatures. Didn't feel good to cut them down They still have quite a lot of mass on them, though. Next year I will give them a bigger head start instead of wasting half the summer waiting for legalization.
Found some bud rot but I cut it all off very generously before hanging them in front of an oscillating fan in my warm, dark laundry room. I didn't separate any colas so they are looking like apartment friendly christmas tree's...
When do you guys normally trim off the excess fan leaves? I was going to do that around the third day of drying or whenever the stems snapped easily. The leaves on there now even the brown and wilted leaves, do not give easily yet. Maybe it's better do trim now before they dry?
Also what tips do you guys have for curing? Just put into jars and open every other day?
Think I already suggested it, but get a hygrometer. Burp the jars for a few hours when the humidity climbs above 68%. Trimming before or after drying is a matter of preference. Leaving the leaves on should slow down the overall drying process and give better quality nugs in the end, but IMO the difference is minimal.

Bananas do seem to be passed down genetically. Grew a bag seed from some bud that had a few, and the plant produced nanners near the final weeks and had probably 50 developed seeds scattered throughout its buds. Interestingly, it only pollinated 1 neighboring plant that was down-wind in a tent of 8, unless that one was also a hermie. I try not to use bag seed for this reason because 2/2 times now they've produced hermies for me. Still strong females, but I think something can mutate when people self-hermie their plants with chemicals to produce feminized seed. The traditional male to female pollination that gives regular unfeminized seeds seems the most reliable way to find a true female seed.

What kind of numbers are you asking for? I'm late to the convo.
If you're growing a personal amount of weed in a legal state, and assuming you have your own land to grow outside, the cost would be practically nothing. Especially with the techniques to concentrate the cannabinoids from the flowers, you could still end up with 1-hit dabs from the most novice grower's plants. That's part of why the industry is so saturated in legal states. They have plenty of ways to hide low-quality, cheaply grown cannabis; in edibles, pre-rolled joints, topicals, concentrates, etc.
I'm still in an illegal state without even medical MJ, but even here the prices have dropped dramatically in recent years. Still depends on who you know since you can't just google up the closest dispensary for a standard price. But it's getting harder and harder for dealers to turn a profit on weed out here. It gets shipped in bulk form the west coast, many people I know get it this way so they can compete with the lower prices. There's less reward than ever, but I suppose that goes hand-in-hand with less risk involved. The police simply don't care about weed anymore here unless it's connected to another crime they have to address. Because of the lower risk, it seems easier than ever to find someone with it for sale, usually straight from Cali.
That said, growing your own is more attractive than ever in such an illegal state. The risk has been lowered, the taboo is gone, and it's the most reliable way to profit in the industry. Still too risky to grow outdoors though, so most illegal homegrowers are focused on high-quality, indoor connoisseur strains. Growing is pretty easy, the difficult part is saving up for the initial investment in high-end equipment to compete with Cali-quality bud saturating the market. Personally, I focused on a setup that can be hidden in a 10x10 bedroom. Three separate 4x4' grow tents with a strain that flowers in ~60 days. Veg for one month, then flower for two months. With proper equipment to maximize PPFD, CO2 and nutrient levels, you could harvest 2 pounds per tent. One tent would be ready each month, so about 2 lbs per month. I spent 1-2k on each tent's setup, though that would depend on the quality of equipment you choose. Anyway, it would pay for itself in the first harvest. When fully operational, such a setup consumes about 3000w consistently, or about $300/month in electricity. It's something to consider worrying about, but no one's busted down my door yet about the electric bill as long as it gets paid.
In the end, I probably spend 60/month on nutes and water, and 40/month on CO2. So for ~$400 per month it's possible to grow 2 pounds of top-shelf flower. Even with market prices dropping all around me, I feel pretty secure with that return on investment.
