I used whole brown rice back in 06/07 and did again when I came back to the hobby. It works good in cakes, just have to PC instead of a steam bath.

My TEK for spawn is verm:soaked rice grain is 1:4. I add the verm because I live in a very dry place, I have to add it but it's not nesissary. Then my sub is coffee:soaked rice grain is a 1:1 and I pressure cook till sterile and make all my tubs/boxes in a SAB. I prefer PC in pint jars and not a full PC, and I only PC at 15 psi for 15-20 min then I take the heat off. I found that works well for keeping grain sterile yet doesn't "pop" them from much heat. I don't recommend using Brown Rice because it's typically easier to pick up contams but I live where the max rh in the year might be %45 and finding a house that is most is far and few. Mycology is easier and harder in a dry environment.

Also Whole Brown Rice is rather starchy, that little vermiculite greatly assist in shaking, I did the same thing, lol.
It works good for making cakes, and popped grains are not an issue for them. I would make pint sized cakes and spawned those to bulk some times. Then I discovered by adjusting my verm/WBR ratio, I could get a shakable mix that could be used for bulk. This came with risk though as it was much harder to see bacteria in there, and then I would shake and spread it.
He was adding hydrated verm to keep a moisture reserve for the culture.

Ah you do a soak, no simmer or boil? How long do you soak the rice? I have only done it with heat and it got sticky and I couldn't shake it after the PC

I found that adding around 1/4-1/3 of the mixture being verm (i should say wetted) helped it towards the last 1/4-1/8 of the jars would kinds slow down, a lot due to not enough water, and it did help. I personally do throw a layer of dry verm on the top even when I do transfer to grain. I PC the verm just like the spawn if I'm doing a transfer. The top layer of verm I've found really helped keep contam to a very minimal amount. Though the verm for me helped hold moisture.
Also I don't do cakes, and act my first cake was a tall shoe box gone side pin. Other than that I never do SGFC and only do bulk tub or tray. I don't shake and instead just pull the cake out, throw out the first 1" of verm/colonized grain from the top because that is usually contam with something, though I typically don't have problems if I get rid of that first 1" off the top. Then just spawn to bulk what ever.

Soak in a bowl of water for 3-4 hours, mine are either soaked enough or completely soaked, only heat I use is when it hits PC.

Hey Yesum, how do you like the tinfoil trays? I found that mycelium grows up onto it, then right before it pins, the mycelium sort of retracts and shrinks away from the tinfoil. Next thing ya know its boom boom time! Have you noticed anything similar?

now I get it. I didn't realize it was pre hydrated. I though he was adding dry verm to combat dry conditions... My bad

After months and months of setbacks (and laziness) i finally have reliable cube genetics to expand. These are all 5 days after the shake, 2nd from left looking particularly agressive.

I used too. But yeah really no different then using a tray.
Ive been cheap and tried re using them and you csn onky use them 2 or 3 tumes at best becasue the mycelium will eat thst shit if its an aggressive colonizer.
