LOL I'm always forgetting the top layer. One of my cakes got contaminated and when I opened it up it had no dry verm barrier.

I plan on possibly adding a top layer to this tub after the first flush. Do you guys think it is too late to add a top layer? I have found very mixed opinions on top layers, while searching. (which is why I didn't add one after I realized I forgot it in the first place) Regardless, I'm going this first flush with no top layer to see what happens. If it is bad I will try adding the top layer after the first flush.

I'm not sure.
A casing layer is sometimes added after full colonization of sub.
I think people have used coir and verm, I think peatmoss or something is common, idr the name though :/

I see, I see, I think I have some knots forming on the surface of the sub now. I haven't had to mist hardly at all so far (literally Once). I have my lid flipped but there doesn't seem to be much evaporation.

Just wanted to post an update and say that my shoebox is doing very nicely. Lots of knots on top and loads of side pins. In the future, if I cover the side of the tub with black tape to prevent light from reaching the sub on the sides will this help prevent side pins?

light doesnt cause side pins. maybe a liner to help but its all about surface conditions. takes a bit to learn. keep growing

Here is a progress update and a couple question. First of all, when this is done with the first flush how should I go about dunking? Second, how should I harvest all those side pins?

You been misting ?
I would just harvest and tilt the sub out for the side pins. If you don't get a lot of fruits maybe just bottom water an hour or keep misting for the second flush

Yeah I have been misting. I just have not had good evaporation on the surface. Maybe I should be fanning? If I decide to bottom water for my next flush should I just pour a bit of water down the side of the tub?

You shouldn't need to fan. That's cool just mist when needed I guess but that's usually how I try and get a pinset, having the constant evaporation off the top
Yeah probably won't need to replace much water if the flush is small, like two shotglass or something for an hour maybe

Alright sounds good. Thanks for all your help. I think the bad surface pinset could be due to no top layer, but it could just be because this is a MS tub.

Yeah probably a little bit of both.
A top layer or casing probably would have helped tremendously

That ain't bad, ain't bad at all. Ny very first flush ever was one mushroom. Was over 150g, but for a big ol mono, that was disappointing. Stay positive

I would see if you get a nice size cluster from one of the boxes and clone it

Perhaps I will give it a shot from this next flush. I think its producing new pins already. I also started another shoebox with a top layer this time so hopefully that will make a difference.
