Question about effectiveness of old mushrooms
    #25119365 - 04/06/18 07:15 PM (5 years, 11 months ago)

I've got some old mushrooms, like almost 2 years old.  Dried properly and stored in ziplock bag with desiccant packs.  Have kept them in the closet at home.

It's been about a year since I last tripped, and I have an opportunity to trip Monday night.  I have about 8.5g worth.

Do dried mushrooms degrade significantly over time?  I was considering a 5g dose, which I've done several times before, but I don't want a misfire!

So 2 questions really.  Will they have degraded appreciably in 2 years?  Should I just take 'em all in case they have lost potency?  These are homegrown MS.

TIA

Hard to say, but I'd be scared to do the full 8.5

I had a half ounce stored in an air tight pill vial and after 2 years it definitely got weaker. After 4 years there was very little left. I took like 3 grams and it felt like a microdose.

Are they still cracker dry?
They snap when you go to bend them?

If they were completely dry and kept completely dry I don't see why they would have degraded in potency...

I would eat them all, have the time of your life.

I have no first hand experience with mushrooms that old*

There's only one way to find out.

I had some shrooms lose a lot of their potency over one and a half years. They weren't stored properly, though.

My shroom chocolates on the other hand are still fine even after two years. It all depends on storage. Keep them airtight and dry.

Yeah I'd be concerned since they weren't stored in a jar. Still, be careful eating them all.

The full 8.5 might be a little much, I had some cracker dry shrooms stored at room temperature that were still pretty strong after a little over a year. I'd say at least 90% of their original strength.

Yeah I guess 8.5 can be heavy but idk he said he's done 5g multiple times already.

I doubt it would be too much heavier than that.

Might be cool.

I don't quite have personal experience with this so it's hard to say. Like someone else said there's only one way to find out. However if I had to assume I would assume they'd be slightly weaker.

One time I sold a girl shrooms (really good quality ones) and she lied to me and told me she ate them when in reality she held onto them for like a year and a half because she couldn't find the right time to trip I guess. Well unfortunately she threw them out and never took them so I don't know if they were even still good or not. She said she threw them out because they got all dried out and old and basically almost like dust according to her.

i mean, who holds on to shrooms that long before eating them, right?

i have simply because i hadn't had a good opportunity until now and it's not something you want to force.

anyway, down the hatch they go Monday night

I had some dried shrooms that we're ziplocked and stored in an airtight container. 8 months or so later when I finally got the time to pick them up they were weak to no effects at all

they've been stored dry, room temp, no light, but not air tight container.  i'm now expecting much dissapoint, but i'll know for sure tomorrow.

i'll be sure to report back here to add to the documentation/knowledge base on the effectiveness of old product

I started storing in the freezer in an air-tight glass jar with tons of MgSO4 as desiccant. Seems like room temp storage in air-tight container can be hit or miss.

Hope they work out for ya.

here's one data point that suggests mushrooms don't lose a ton of effectiveness after a couple years storage

many factors come into play, not the least of which these were from a multi-spore cake grow, so the potency variability of individual fruits can have a big effect.

i chopped up the 8.5+ grams and boiled them in lemon water for about 10 mins.  i drank the tea with honey during the next 10 mins and decided i would get in my bed with the lights out for the comeup, if any.  i had very low expectations, and knew that a dark room with eyes closed would be the easiest way to tell if they were still active or not.

they were still active

in about 15 mins, i began to notice the formation of primarily circular and smooth sided flowing, pulsing shapes.  the color scheme was on the cool end of the spectrum, lots of blues and greens.  i thought, cool, i'm going to get at least some trip features from these old shrooms.

the experience quickly accelerated over the next few minutes.  i was completely content to stay in my bed. i didn't want music, and i didn't want my eyes open.  i had a playlist set up, but never turned on the stereo.

about 2 hours later, maybe a little less, i came to realize that "i" had gone away for a while.  i remember i was aware that the idea of "me" was fracturing and dissolving.  then there was a period of "not me" as an  observer.  at some point the idea of "me" began to come back into focus.

i got up, turned on a light, and went downstaris to look around.  size distortion and proportionality were all out of whack.  i managed to pour and drink a glass of water.  soooo good.  but all i really wanted to do was get back in the bed and observe the world behind closed eyes.  i kept thinking this or that piece of music would be great to hear, but the better thing seemed to be silence.  well, not total silence.  i had a machine running that makes ocean waves sounds.  that was soothing to have in the background.

the comedown was slower than i'm accustomed to.  i usually experience a sharp drop off from the peak, but this was much slower.  i took one puff of green off my one-hitter and rocketed back up.  i got back in the bed and was amazed at how the texture and composition of the CEVs had changed.  sharper lines, more golds and lime green in the color scheme.  more 3D and depth to the visions, more natural landscape in appearance, more outdoorsy, with trees, shaddow, sparkling sunlight.

another feature for the whole trip, during the parts where i was "me" and not off somewhere else, was the clarity of headspace.  not as much of the massive mental confusion that characterized my earlier mushroom trips.  don't know if that's a function of more experience with mushrooms, or the fact that different fruits and different trips are just different.

my highest doses prior to this were in the 5 g range.  this trip went well beyond that in many ways, particularly the ego dissolution.

i'd do this again, for sure.  taking the day off from work today, having lunch with a non-tripping buddy.  probably have a nap in my future too.

those were the last of my home grown multi-spore mushrooms.

anyway, i hope this helps the next person who has some really old mushrooms wondering if they're still magic or not.  mine were totally fine.

Ha yea she was just nervous though and knew mushrooms and psychedelics weren't casual things to mess with. I think she just had that kind of respect for them and to this day I still don't think she's tried them. This was back in 2012.

Also great report man. It was a success :mushroom2:

2 years is not old. I have 7 year old mushrooms that were dried properly, ground, put in capsules, and stored at room temperature. After 7 years, they still have at least 75% of the original potency.
