Was backpacking with my wife a few years ago. It was hot as hell and dry and some lightning strikes had caused wildfires nearby. The heat and smoky air slowed us down so that at dusk we were still nowhere near the spot where we are supposed to make camp.
I look down hill and see the backside of a mountain lion about 30 yards away walking in the same direction as us, slightly ahead of us. I decide not to tell my wife cause I think she'll freak out. By the time it gets completely dark I've lost sight of it.
We switch on our headlamps and needless to say, I've got my head on a swivel. There was a lot of wild life out there and I'm making sure none of it is that lion.
As we came around a curve the trail became straight as far as we could see. In the distance a pair of eyes reflect back at me. They kind of Bob up and down and left and right, locked on us.
"That looks like a predator", I say. My wife's like,"Fuck You. Are you trying to scare me? Don't try to scare me out here"!
The thing starts to Sprint at us. I hold my trecking pole up in front of my body ready brace my weight against it if need be. The glowing eyes Bob up and down quickly as it closes distance with us and suddenly runs off the trail up the hillside to our left.
Slowly and cautiously we move forward. After a small number of steps the beast hops down the hillside and the eyes are bouncing up and down towards us. Shit! This thing is gonna pounce us. It runs up the hill again.
We start to move again and again the beast hops down the hill and heads at us again. It gets to where we can start to see more than it's eyes and it heads downhill, to our right, a little grey fox no longer in attack mode, saunters off.
That fox left us with a slough of curse words and a hell of an adrenaline rush, which probably helped us with the rest of the hike.

I go jetskiing on a river a couple miles from my house. Occassionally, i will jet kei down the river and a geese or duck or even a small flock of them will "fly" with me, matching speeds. Its really special. I think even a stork flew with me, they are pretty big.
Definitely majestic
I was watching this show and this guy would walk around a pond everyday. This goose would follow him every day. Eventually the guy would get on his scooter and the goose would fly like 2 feet from his head all the way home.

Thundermuscle75 That's pretty freaky. I hate the dark because you can't see shit. Animals see way better than humans in the dark.
The other day I was having a fire at this spot by me. I was alone. I hear these crazy sounds like cats fighting maybe 30 ft from me. Probably some raccoons.
A few weeks ago I took 2 feet of San Pedro at this spot in the forest preserves by this slough. Beautiful place. So when I get there walking to the spot I see a head pop up. Coyote. I made a previous post about one howling at me at the same spot. They had a den there. So I get to the spot and sit down. There were 3 of them checking me out. They looked for 20 seconds and took off. I will post some pics.

That's a pretty spot.
What area is that?
Coyotes usually seem pretty cool to be around. They did spook me once when I was out alone at night and they were howling from all directions. Really felt surrounded. Technically I guess I was.
I once saw a pack of coyotes about to take down a small deer. The deer followed by coyotes ran past me and one of the coyotes leaped at the deers haunches as they dissapeared down a gully. A few seconds later they were howling like mad, with coyotes from the hills calling back.
I wanted to go check it out, but I wussed out. I figured they would be pretty territorial over a fresh kill. I kind of wish I followed up. Would make a better story.

It's in the Cook County Forest Preserves in IL. The area is beautiful and only like 30 minutes from downtown Chicago. Tons of hiking trails. On that trail I always see tons of deer and coyotes. On one hike I seen 11 deer and 7 coyotes.
I have seen at least 50 coyotes. 99% of the time as soon as they see you they run. It is rare to see more than 2 together. I seen 4 once coming at me from an adjoining trail. They were about 30 feet from me and didn't seem scared or excited just kept walking towards me. I have no fear of them at all. They are pretty weak. They rarely hunt deer. It probably depends on the availability of food.
I think I seen a couple of wolves there. They were big but pretty far away. There have been a few sightings of wolves in IL.
I posted a ton of pics in the random outdoor picture thread of my hikes in the area if you want to check them out.

A friend and I had been hitching around the country for a while and had rolled into Oklahoma via Arkansas. Well we’d heard all these stories about wild hogs and this that and the other. So some trucker dropped us off not to far past the border and it was late at night so we did the usal. Now given in most areas east of the Mississippi and then some there are an abundance of trees so we’d made the best of our hammocks more times then not. In this particular occasion this just wasn’t an option. So like many times before we dive in a thicket roll out a tarp and claim our spot. Having walked a shit ton that day I immediately pass out while my buddro nurses a beer. Next thing I know I’m upended from my sleep and he is screaming about something circling us. So struggling to find our only flashlight I grab the heaviest thing I can find and as soon as I do I grab head lamp point it at the “intruder” hit the switch and chuck said object as hard as I can. And so as it some times goes...I realized all the errors of my ways. The thing I threw well that was the 3/4 of a 24oz my buddy was coveting and the thing I threw it at that was a cute curious optimistic armadillo. Mind you you he didn’t give a fuck I’d missed him by a mile. Now my friend on the other hand not so much.

Thats really cool. Geese loving following the leader.
Had a crazy experience today.
I was outside, dong yard work at this ladys house. She lives on a hill in a sort of rural area. Well, it was windy yesturday, tree limbs swaying, lots of creeking. Then i heard a loud CRACK and a huge 30ft conifer came crashing down about 100ft from where i was standing! It was intense!
Then about 1 hour later, i see a wild deer roaming in the forested area of this womans house acompanied by a fawn. So cute. The adult deer just stared at me as i stared it it motionlessness, checking it out. It was quite the moment we had.

I have been seeing trees and branches falling like crazy lately. I was just at Devil's Lake State Park and a branch fell on my tent and put a small hole in it.

I never had a fear of trees, but after seeing that one fall, a person could probably die from a tree falling. Ive heard stories of it happening.

I came across a black bear and its cub a few weeks ago while backpacking. Nothing "crazy" happened but seeing them was crazy enough. First time I've seen one up close and in the wild. It was pretty intense.
I also ran into a deer once at about 90 mph in my dads old cadillac. I was pissed as hell at first since I totaled the car but looking back on it now I just feel bad for the deer.

You definitely don't want to run into a bear with it's cubs. Black bears aren't that aggressive though. I seen a juvenile black bear in Sequoia. It was climbing down the mountain and came onto the road where I was waiting. I wanted to go up to it but I had my dog with me. It probably had just left it's mother.
Where were you at when you seen it?

I know the black bears are less aggressive and they’re supposedly smaller than brown bears but this thing was huge. I’m still in awe by its sheer size. It could have ripped us to pieces if it wanted to.
I was also shocked by its speed and agility. The cub took off right away. The mother stared at us for a couple seconds then followed its cub at lighting speed down the mountainside.
We were in the SW section of great smoky mtn National Park. It’s a beautiful park. I would highly recommend it for its backcountry. Stay away from all the popular shit near the main roads. People everywhere.

That's why bears scare me because they are so fast and powerful. You can't do a thing. They can even climb trees. I think the smoky mountains are supposed to have the highest concentration of black bears in the US. I have been in the Smoky's by the tail of the dragon. That famous road. It is beautiful. I fished at Cheoah lake. I had my car on the dragon and it was awesome. I was in that area twice. The only wildlife I seen was a turkey crossing the road in front of me.
I seen a video of a guy with a helmet cam. A black bear came at him so fast and swatted his ass. Just knocked him down and walked away. Crazy.

Yeah that's why they say the best thing you can do if a bear is charging is stand as tall and make yourself as big as possible and make noise to let it know you are human. The best you can do is make yourself seem intimidating to make the bear think twice.. then if it does get close you pound that motherfucker in the muzzle as hard as possible/bear mace/hope you have a weapon in hand Those things can move... there's no outrunning a bear.. they can move about 30mph.. that's faster than Usain Bolt
That's black bears anyway.... they usually aren't aggressive anyway unless protecting their cubs. Don't get between a mama bear and cubs. But I've also heard black bears may charge, but rarely ever attack.. the vast majority of time they bluff charge and stop just short. That's been my only experience getting rushed by a black bear.. he veered off at about 10 feet away.
Brown/Grizzly bears you are supposed to play dead and lay flat with your arms around your neck.. and fight back if it attacks. But shit you probably aren't winning that one. Grizzlies are some scary fucks
Guns aren't really super effective either unless you blast a hole in its brain/heart first shot.. a non-fatal gunshot wound will just piss a bear off and make it even more aggressive and those fuckers can take a lot of them and not even phase them.

Yeah you need to shot it perfect and kill it right away or your screwed. Even the bear spray doesn't work sometimes. I was thinking if one attacked me I would gouge it's eyes. Just poke them out. I'm sure it would stop if you did that. I always think about what to do when attacked. There was a guy that killed a big ass grizzly with a spear. That's a brave dude.
Compared to humans animals are far superior strength and speed wise. We have the advantage with making weapons and working together. Even a hippo can out run a human. You could easily side step it though. Hippos kill more people than anything else in Africa.
I was watching a show where these guys were trying to scare off a tiger from a village. They were on elephants. They were in some field with like 5 foot tall whatever was growing. You couldn't see that anything was there. This tiger appears jumps and bites the guy on the arm. The elephant was 10 feet tall. That is insane. Tigers are bad ass. they are big and hunt solo. So powerful and fast. Love them. They are in very small numbers now. So are rhinos and giraffes. It's a shame.

Yeah I've heard if you have to fight a bear the best thing to do is go straight for the nose/eyes/face as brutally as possible, a hard hit to the nose could send it running.. or it could claw your face off.
I saw that video of that tiger jumping up that elephant and biting that dude.. shits crazy.
And yeah man hippos are dangerous as fuck.. you wouldn't think so but I've heard those fuckers can be aggressive as shit, they will total cars

So I was just at my favorite spot to chill and smoke at the forest preserves by me. I wasn't going to take my camera but at the last minute decided to. I was laying there with my back to the trees. For some reason I looked behind me and this doe was standing like 20 ft from me. My dog was laying there with her back to it and didn't know it was there. It was just staring at my dog. I took 4 pics of it and got some video. It finally made a sound and took off. They sound like pterodactyls or something. My dog jumped up and started barking.
I am going to have a fire if the mosquitoes aren't bad. I need to convert the photos and I will upload the vid on youtube. I will post them some time in the near future.
